Nintendo provided an update with the upcoming eshop closures for Wii U and 3DS

Last day to add funds is August 29th

Last day you can purchase anything is March 27th

Additionally Nintendo has confirmed that sales of Fire Emblem Fates will end one month earlier for some reason on February 28th

Nintendolife is a UK site, so those announcements are for from Nintendo UK. Is it the same in the US?

Doesn't look like Nintendo of America has commented on it yet but I assume it'll be pretty similar if not the same

I think you can still use funds added to your Switch account to buy 3DS/Wii U games up until March. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on that though!

So I have a 3ds is there any must buy DLC for any of the 3DS Fire Emblem games. Or any must buy DLC titles I suppose.

This reminds me that I still need to get extra memory for my WiiU so I can have all of my purchases downloaded before the closure.

as far as Fire Emblem goes, probably mostly Revelations so you don't have to shell out for the collector's edition. Other than that I think most of it is grinding dlc, and maybe a couple of extra event maps for each game but I couldn't really tell you which ones are worth it offhand.

More generally, the DLC cases in Ace Attorney. The DLC for Fantasy Life is also a pretty important one to get if you intend to play it. Maybe the Mario Golf DLC, but I think it's just courses from past games.

Not sure if there's anything else super worth it. Like for atlus titles, I think it's mostly just grinding dlc and cosmetic but there might be some extra bosses too. Culdcept Revolt has DLC, but 99% of it's cosmetic... there's like 2 extra match dlc, but one's mostly just an endurance one that might be helpful for the achievements and one that I guess is just extra matches with the friend characters (but there's already hundreds of hours of content). Maybe the NSMB2 extra courses if you like that game?

These are the exact same dates they announced in February. I don't know what this "update" is.

The only thing new is the Fire Emblem Fates bit, which hasn't been announced outside of the UK?

Since late May you've not been able to use a credit card to add funds directly to 3DS/Wii U accounts.

This is phase 2 of the shutdown, where you won't be able to use eShop cards to add funds. March next year is when it all properly shuts down.

Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems) with their Nintendo Account wallet (used with the Nintendo Switch family of systems) can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until March 27, 2023.

Is this automatic if you use the same Nintendo account on both consoles? I don't remember anything in your account specifically being called a "wallet" by name, it was just the money linked to your account.

Future Past is one of the best parts of Awakening if you never got that.

Revelations is the opposite of must buy imo <_<

Okay, this is good to know. I was afraid that the new August date meant that this would no longer be possible.

For Fates get the 2 Hidden Truths Maps and the 6 Heirs of Fate maps. The story telling for those maps are legitimately good and by far the best Fates has to offer. It's just a shame they sort of expect the player to beat all three main routes first to fully appreciate what is happening.

For Awakening, you want the three Future Past maps.

Also it looks like I'd need to beat a few chapters to even buy the DLC? Or am I missing something?

I don't remember for Awakening or SoV. But, I think for Fates you can buy main route (Birthright / Conquest / Revelations) from the "Explore Paths" option of the main menu. To buy DLC maps, I think you need to unlock the DLC maps option which requires beating Chapters 6. Fates lets you skip cutscenes and also features an ultra easy Normal+Phoenix mode so you can just mash through to Chapter 6 fairly quickly if you just want to get there to buy stuff.

I have all of the main routes for Fates (actually, I managed to get the collectors edition on launch just because I really wanted a physical copy of Revelations). Ive beaten SoV, gotten like two or three chapters into Awakening (at which point iirc I stopped playing because I was having a hard time keeping everyone alive on hard mode early game). I never started Fates.

If you have a sealed Fates collector's edition I'm going to urge you to just sell it rather than opening and playing it, especially if you didn't especially like Awakening.

It wasn't that I didn't like Awakening, it's that I had a character die a couple times in whatever chapter I was in, got frustrated for the moment, and never got around to going back to it (I was playing on hard mode, though that was mostly because I had found the late game of Three Houses too easy on normal once my characters were largely overleveled; I find the early game pretty difficult on hard). I also have opened Fates (though I do have all of the original packaging).
