Disco Elysium. Probably one of the best narrative-driven game ever made. Not for people who don't like games with a lot of speech/text.

I mean, Hades was pretty fucking well made. I feel impotent recommending indies after that.

It's not really an Indie, but if you haven't played SOMA, please try it. Try to focus and pretend you are really in the game. I promise you by the end after reading all the exposition and data files you'll really have enjoyed it. It's far out. I fucking loved it. Some parts of it will blow your fucking mind too. Especially underwater.

Depends on what you count as Indie and what you count as best.
Most successful goes to Minecraft. Not really much debate here.
Favorite but I wouldn't consider them Indie anymore? Probably Path of Exile.
Favorite but definitely still considered indie? Terraria.

Phasmophobia, I always loved the concept of those ghost shows, even though they're fake as hell and the way they present things as being real somwhat irratates me. SO I love that there's a game based around the ghosts being real.

Most of the standouts I would have chosen are already listed, so I'll go with something a bit more obscure and niche.

segawa's End Roll. I liked the story a lot.

Zachtronics games
Hotline Miami 1 & especially 2
Death Road to Canada
Factorio as mentioned
Furi
KSP (was originally indie but is now owned by Take2)
Creeper World games
maybe Butterscotch Shenanigans games

making this list, I sort of don't see how these recommendations are useful. sure these are indie games, and they're good worth-playing games, but none of them have any particular feature that was asked for. whether one likes them will probably depend what actual genres you like, not the fact that they're "indie".

Nice to see some SOMA love. I'll play anything that company makes tbh. Penumbra, Amnesia, SOMA. It's like Dark Souls where the engine they have is just interesting enough to make every game worth playing whether it's ultimately good or bad. It's always an experience. While we're at it I'll just say that Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is highly underrated. It's the only game from Frictional that was developed by another company(The Chinese Room, mainly known for Dear Esther). It's more of a walking simulator than other games in the series, but that allows it to focus more on delivering the narrative.

Speaking of walking simulators, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and What Remains of Edith Finch are great indie games. Also, Gone Home.
