Just started. Never played a Persona game before, so I don't fully know what to expect. I've watched a few videos on YouTube before and it seems like the type of game I like. I prefer slow games, choices that affect the plot, turn based combat and exploring. Named myself Dagger and got to where you get the diary and saved my game before turning it off for the night.

I don't have a whole lot of time for videos games anymore, but I will update this topic daily with my progress.

I cant wait for it to come out on PC!

Be prepared for the long haul, it's a 120 hour game. That said, there's a reason why it's my second favourite game of all time

I got through the castle section. It was pretty fun. I forgot his name, but the vulgar guy was pretty funny. I really liked his dialogue when I was walking up to the people in the jail cells. I hope he doesn't die. And I also met the not cat Morgana. I think that's his name.

When I was going through the castle I was running around everywhere looking for hidden treasure. Is this game like that?

Are you planning on playing it again when it comes on PC? I kind of regret not buying the physical copy of the game, so I may end up getting it again on Switch if I end up really enjoying it.

The beginning is the 'now' while the first part of the game is a flashback up to then. While it's not a big spoiler and I can tell you if you really want to know, you can also choose to wait and find out for yourself

That's half of the game: dungeon crawling. The other half is a social sim: you have a limited number of days on your calender and have to juggle hanging out with friends, part time jobs, the dungeon crawling I mentioned earlier, etc.

Yes! Ryuji. Hes hilarious. How many days are there? The beginning made it seem like just six months.

Played a bit more but Im getting tired now. Ryuji finally got his own Persona. A badass captain guy.

This game has social links, basically visual novel routes where you raise your friendship level based in how you treat them. You have them with your party members which grant you gameplay bonuses, and you have it with some NPCs which occasionally give you some bonuses as well. For the most part the appeal is the story, you're basically making friends with them and becoming more involved with their lives.

The draw is that partaking in social link events takes up your after school time. You've gotta balance your life between social links and dungeon crawling.

Persona 5 calls them confidants.

Why is everyone starting with 5? You're not the first one to start with 5, it's been a recurring pattern I notice. Be a shame to not start with 3 and then appreciate the improvements as the series goes on

Availability. 5 is the newest game on the newest systems, and while the other games aren't unpopular, they're very niche. Persona 5 has sales and popularity backing it up in a way that P3 and 4 didn't.

We're getting a collection soon, but until it comes out in October those games are confined to legacy hardware. Persona 5 is both popular and current, so when it began selling gangbusters, people bought in to see what the hype was about.

That makes sense, I forget that not everyone keeps a ps2 or vita around to play retro games.

Did it really sell so well, wasn't aware P5 garnered a bigger popularity than p3/p4 combined, but the existence of p5 Strikers (a great game in its own right) does confirm that and then some

From what I just googled, the series has sold around 15 million units and close to 4 million of those are Persona 5.

Great game but damn does some of the dialogue just go on and on and on I cant count the number of times I had to rush through dialogue because I had to go out somewhere urgently and needed to save. Speaking of which saving is far to far apart. Looking at upwards of an hour between saves due to the colossal amount of the slow ass dialogue to read through.

This was my first Persona game too. Its a big commitment, but a very enjoyable game if you dont mind taking your time with games. The music is phenomenal. I loved the battle system, it was fun and varied enough to stay engaging for a turn-based system.

Well 4 is already on modern hardware too, but yeah 5 has the popularity going for it

Just saying that that part's more of a tease for the Royal-specific stuff, the original didn't have her there (you just continue stealthing out of the place)

sumire/Kasumi felt tacked on, the way they advertise her as highly as they did only to have her playable at the end game basically was badly designed, i hated how the true good ending went, the final month in general dragged for SOOOO long since everything was alreasdy beaten and done, and the game itself was way wayyyy too easy for some reason? I was bored with combat even on hard/merciless because you had to try to lose, there were no stakes in combat essentially

overall, for me personally, Vanilla > Royal, although Royal is still good

I didn't play Vanilla, but I understand Royal had a lot of QoL stuff going for it. Stuff like baton pass and certain bosses being better to fight

But it was easy, yeah. The only game I ever managed to beat on hard mode (not that I'm complaining!)

Am I able to ship other people? Because I like Ryuji for Ana.

I have four characters now. Is that the most I can have in a party?

yes, but you can change up your party in dungeons

No one else ships. Also you will remember Sojiros name lol and you will eventually find out why I nicknamed him Brojiro lol.

It would actually be cool, and a logical next step, to be able to set up relationships with your party members. But I guess that is too much fluff at that point.

Oh. Im still learning everyones names. I found out the red hair girls names is Yoshizawa.

Ryuji asking about why were discussing cars when the airsoft owner said the word automatic I just about died of laughter.

Getting sleepy, so I turned the game off. Im up to the part where it says I have a deadline to finish the palace. Should I do some chores for a few days to prepare? Seems I have some free time so maybe I can earn some reputation with people first.

And whats the deal with the punk doctor? Can I only buy medicine from her or is there more to her?

Try visiting her clinic after school. You might be able to hang around until nightfall somehow.

Generally, it's a good idea to do the palace asap. Since it's your first one, it might take 2 days, the others you should be able to get done within a single day

Once you finish the palace, you need two days where you can't do anything except fight the boss, so it's better to get them done sooner rather than later

Played a bit before work.

I decided to start the palace straight away. Finally learned about hiding behind furniture which makes ambush attacks easier. And I learned about baton pass. Seems like a nifty feature for when I'm dealing with multiple enemies.

I'm about to play a bit more. I want to finish this dungeon today.

Thanks. I will keep that in mind. When I was given a two week time frame, I figured it would be better to take a few days to prepare, but my characters seem strong enough to handle this castle already.

So they talk like a lot? Like extremely long winded conversations? Like equal time talking as actual gameplay?

I played a little bit of strikers and hated all the talking. Its boring af....

Continued making progress through the castle, and ended up to the Central Tower and saved. Im close to being done with the first dungeon. I also found a painting which took me to the beginning of the game. Ive used nearly all the items I have from getting hurt by red aura monsters. Would it be wise to go back to the real world and continue the next day? Or should I keep going? I was planning on just going straight to the boss but Ill go back if anyone suggests I restock on potions.

After I finish this dungeon I plan on reading up more on personas and maximizing their potential. All I normally do is attack because I hate wasting MP in games.

Once you get to the end of the palace you won't (can't) fight the boss straight away, so if you think you can manage to just get there without stocking up then you should.

Otherwise, you should be able to buy SP (magic) healing items from the sexy doctor iirc. Get those and don't be afraid to use your persona when necessary!

You have to use MP/spells, theres no avoiding it or youre gonna have a bad time. Gotta trigger baton pass chains to maximize damage.

As you get further into the game and start having more options for the social links, personally I would recommend you use a guide to see which ones give which perks, and what the best dialogue options are to progress with them. Youll expose yourself to spoilers on who the characters are but its not that big of a deal. What is a big deal is how some really game-changing perks are hidden behind social links and theres no way to know about them if you dont just look it up.

One thing I would think vanilla is better, is the beginning. It is so so much harder early on trying to one shot palaces with how limited SP is, and bullets do not recover after battle.
