I could get a bunny and they are A-OK with that. Which is weird since a bunny will most likely cause more damage than a cat or dog combined.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I had to pay $550 pet deposit for our one cat. It explicitly does NOT cover any damage the pet causes like a security deposit and is literally just an extra fee I'll never get back.
A few years later, the apartment dropped the fee to $400. I asked if I could get a refund for the difference and was told no.
Still pisses me off. How is this shit legal?

I'd have a goat. Baby goats are amazing.

I never understood why dogs aren't allowed at places, I'm assuming it has something to do with them causing damage but that should just be covered under the security deposit

The place I heard about was apparently they had problems with people not picking up after their dogs and no one telling them who it was. So they just banned dogs all together.

Should have just taken all their security deposits tbh

That's kind of like asking a sale to honor a price after you bought something the other month. Not really a question of legality at all. In general, everything you don't like doesn't have to be illegal.

Fast way to get a class-action lawsuit.

Not sure why you think I'd make up something so specific yet mundane, and I don't really care.
2008 and 6 active posts, who the fuck are you, anyway? Apparently you're super familiar w/ me.

If it was like a security deposit and I got it back less any pet damages, it'd be one thing. But it's just a one-time fee to have a pet at all. The risk to the apartment from a cat/dog didn't suddenly decrease for new renters. The rent itself isn't even the same, that fluctuates every year.

I generally assume that it's so landlords can enter the apartment without fear of being attacked (or caught, in many cases). For the most part, that's easily solved by arranging a visit with the tenant to make sure somebody is home to supervise the dog (which they should be doing anyway), but needing the tenant to be home in the event of an emergency like a flood can be a problem, so I can kind of understand it. I suspect it's more commonly less scrupulous landlords wanting to keep the option of entering without permission open than it is such concerns, though.
