And doing in a back alley with a coat hanger is so much better, right?

Right? Making an argument that a traumatic medical procedure has potential side effects is a pretty lame argument and it's disingenuous because they obviously don't care about the safety of women if they want to outright ban the medical procedures that carry far less risk of injury.

Women are still injured today, particularly during D&E procedures. I would go into the specifics a little more but mods dont allow it. I got modded for it, they deemed it trolling.

They can take an immersion blender to the uterus for all I care (which they don't, given that most abortions - especially when access is properly protected instead of being gated behind so much red tape that women have to wait weeks or months for approval to book appointments - happen early enough that they're barely more than an extra-heavy period), that's still no business of the government. Present the mother with the necessary information about the risks and benefits, then let her make an informed choice about what she wants to happen to her body. The law only needs to step in if the procedure is significantly more dangerous than is acceptable.

There are no risk-free medical procedures. You go in and mess around with what the body is doing, you are inevitably going to end up breaking something from time to time. Rather than looking for "risk-free" look for something that carries fewer risks than the alternatives and/or yields a commensurate benefit. Medical abortions fit that bill: They are safer and have fewer significant side effects than carrying a pregnancy to term or performing a non-medical abortion.

BeerOnTap posted...
Anti-lifers desperately want to avoid and silence any discussion about whats involved in abortion procedures because they know its gruesome.

Anti-choicers routinely dismiss the risks and suffering associated with carrying a pregnancy to term, either because they know it's gruesome or because they don't think the suffering of women matters (or, perhaps more commonly, they think women deserve to suffer for daring to have sex). When you cite maternal mortality rates for abortions, do you cite maternal mortality rates for deliveries alongside them for a proper comparison? Or are you deliberately hiding the other side of the position you're making because you know it would only make you look bad?

FrozenBananas posted...
Anti-lifers btw lol

Really, that's just giving up the pretense of "pro-life" and "pro-choice." Neither inherently describes the positions well, they're just names conceived to paint the opposing side as "anti-life" and "anti-choice." In some ways, I appreciate the candour, even if his opinion is trash.

I'm not pro-life for evil people.

If you rape someone, straight out force them to have sex without consent and it's proven 100%, kill that person.

If you murder innocent people without cause, kill that person.

If someone is too dangerous to be free or a productive member of society, kill them.

We have plenty of humans on this planet, and many are monsters. Those who are proven to be monsters should be weeded out.

Abortion shouldn't be an issue because no accidental pregnancies should ever happen at this point with the technology we have (at least in non-3rd world countries).

Rape should not exist or at least the penalties for it should be so severe that nobody would even consider it.

If you don't like my opinions that is fine, I'm not trying to convince people to feel the same way. I certainly don't dislike you for your opinions. Sorry if you don't feel the same way.

It drives me nuts to see people saying just don't have sex with men.

Okay so it's more reasonable for me to not have intimacy with my loving male partner because some people think a medical procedure feels bad man?

And it also just completely disregards the amount of male on female sexual violence there is that includes acts that can impregnate us.

It isn't funny. This is reality. If I get raped and I get pregnant I don't want to have a child. I've made the decision in my life to not have children. I take all reasonable precautions by having permanent birth control to protect myself. Why should my state government tell me I have to give birth and possibly die because a man couldn't control his sexual urges like a disgusting pig?

It's not a joke. It's real life. I have been raped 3 times. It happens. It happens to women more than once.

If I was a woman and still have kids, and planned on it, I would move just so I didn't find a guy here I wanted to marry that had to stay in this country due to work etc. Rather be in a place where I knew I could start a family if I wanted to.

That was not a joke. Maybe I need to make it more clear when I'm not joking since I do so often.

I see now that other people were joking about that, it wasn't my intent. I seriously don't think sex with men while you can still get pregnant is worth it, at all, unless you want to have a baby. You can have other kinds of sex with a partner, they can use toys, you can use toys etc, but straight up traditional sex? Screw that. Especially if you have some insane government that is telling you that if you get pregnant you have to have the baby etc. In such a society, just flat out don't have intercourse with a guy that could possibly get you pregnant. That at least is how I would deal with the situation (and again, even as a guy that was EXACTLY how I acted even when younger, not having random sex etc unless it was with someone I was willing to have a child with).

Not saying everyone has to do that, but it's my solution and what I would do if I was a woman in this society (well I'd freaking leave this society if I was young enough to have kids after this (probably before this) but if I couldn't leave for some reason, there would be no guys hitting it with me for sure.

I don't know about long-term side effects, but it tends to be really unpleasant short-term. Nausea, headaches, mood disruptions... It's basically all the side effects of the regular pill, but super concentrated.

It's also not that effective. A lot better than nothing, of course, but for emergency contraception purposes you're actually better off getting an IUD. That's also not without its unpleasant side effects (it's literally shoving a little stick through the cervix. Not the most pleasant experience), but it's a lot more likely to stop the pregnancy. It is, however, more expensive and less accessible.

Jen0125 posted...

People are already talking about how they're okay with "non-abortive contraceptives" but want others banned, which is a term with no formal definition and near-infinite room for interpretation to allow bans for pretty much everything more involved than the rhythm method. A lot of people are presumably talking about IUD's, which some consider "abortive" because they allow fertilization but then prevent the embryo from implanting, but even that's not an accurate understanding of how they work (that's only true of copper ones, and even then that's a secondary effect and their primary function is spermicidal).

Consider that what you're saying is basically the same as telling somebody not to practice judaism or have any sort of homosexual interactions in Nazi Germany: It works around the problem, sure, but it doesn't solve it, and that workaround involves pretty considerable personal sacrifice.

With appropriate birth control (made readily available and not restricted by Y'all Qaeda), you can reduce the risk of pregnancy to be low enough as to be negligible on a personal scale. That's not to say you can't still make the decision to avoid sex altogether to stamp out that last bit of risk, but it does mean that most people are going to be able to have sex freely and never end up with an unwanted pregnancy. Most, however, is not all, which is why there needs to be a backup plan for the handful of couples that slip through the cracks.
