Shade the Echidna
First Appearance: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

So let's start by talking about Sonic Chronicles. It's an absolutely garbage game that is humiliating to have come out and I don't know what went wrong with it, but so much did. I remember being so excited for a Sonic RPG, but this is trash. It's impossible to enjoy because the gameplay is so unbelievably awful. From going around the overworld to the combat, it's just an excusably awful experience. The story itself is fine. Just fine. Nothing special. Honestly, it's rather boring because we get a dialogue tree that is absolutely unnecessary. We also get DaRk EcHiDnAs which Shade is one of.

Shade looks cool though, to her credit. Her armor is pretty badass with a dark black and pink and grey accents that look like a weird ram. In her other outfit with the black jumpsuit and bandana she also looks like a cool take on the echidnas.

Shade is a bit interesting in this game though. She's probably the only good thing to come out of this disaster. She's the badass warrior trope type that learns about friendship from Sonic and his friends. Which I find to be a bit of a tired trope by now. It's been a minute since I played the game but I just remember her seeming cool.

It would be cool to bring Shade around again, because she does fit a role that I don't know if we really have filled with an outright badass warrior type, but I'd rather have Espio or someone there. That said, Shade was pretty good. Maybe rehash her and put her in the series again if Ken Penders doesn't throw another legal tantrum over it.

The only thing I know about Sonic Chronicles is that some of the characters reference the Ken Penders characters he took away in the lawsuit, so the game can never get a sequel.

Game was awful. Actually became so bad to play around the halfway point I think when your damage starts doing pittance against these massive armoured enemies. Each battle takes so long that along with everything else that sucked about the game I traded it in.

The game is so bad to play through and then they have the balls to have Tails and Sonic break the fourth wall at the end and have them go through the credits complimenting individuals who worked on it. Like I'm sure working conditions weren't going to allow this game to be any good and it's none of their faults but patting your backs in a cutesy way after you put the player through a miserable experience playing your bad game suuuuucks.

The Erazor Djinn

Wait what? I was surprised enough to see Chronicles bashed in the write-up, much less other people agreeing with this. Was this always the consensus? Because I only remember the consensus being "why can't Sonic Team make dialogue this good; this is the best Sonic game since the characters were still mute", and that the fact that the sequel that the ending clearly hints at would never come was a travesty.

Didn't realize this board was a bunch of fucking zoomers who can't handle a challenge. Yes, the difficulty spiked massively halfway through the game. But unplayable? Well, yes, I'd agree that ____ Chronicles is an RPG which seemed to have a promising story but was derailed by a combat system that made it completely unplayable...except the first word is "Xenoblade", not "Sonic".

I won't defend the music though. Sonic 3 & Knuckles has one of the best soundtracks ever and they desecrated one of its best tracks.

Blaze the Cat
First Appearance: Sonic Rush

Blaze the Cat is fucking rad and they need to put her in more things.

Blaze is a purple cat with a top knot and fun little royal dress and heels and floofy stuff around her wrists and ankles. She looks awesome.

I love Blaze because she's cool and pretty much a better new main character than "<INSERT NAME> the Hedgehog". She's unique, looks cool, and she's got a nice, measured personality for the series. She comes across as a good straight man to bounce off of with jokes as well as letting her be patient and reserved, but also keeping it real when it needs to be. She's great.

Oh and she's get fire powers and stuff. Fire is cool and makes her stand out so much when nobody has any sort of mystical powers like she does. It's great. You can do so much with it in this franchise.

The problem is that her backstory kind of traps her. She's a future princess from the future world with a future Eggman... so she doesn't get to be around as much. In fact, they tried to give us Blaze in a mainline game which is great! But then it was Sonic 2006. Which isn't great. As we all know. And she's buddies with Silver from his future and all the problems with Silver being around at all are the same with Blaze. I mean, she even sacrifices herself and dies by absorbing Iblis in that game and ugggggggggh. I guess Silver's destroyed world is fine now yaaaaay...? Anyway it was for nothing so gg great writing.

Find an excuse for Blaze to be in the present world and not a multiverse or whatever. I have no idea why they didn't just have her from another part of the world. Like it's so easy to make her some princess from Fire Cat Zone or something. Instead we have to struggle for a reason to bring an awesome character into the franchise. Blaze is awesome and I'd love for her to be more involved in the series. Make it happen Sega.

The President (of United Federation) [of San Francisco]
First Appearance: Sonic Adventure 2

So did you know the world of Sonic the Hedgehog has the United Federation, which is the United States equivalent? Now you know!

The President is the most president-ass looking man in a blue suit and red tie. The only difference is that he doesn't have grey hair and he isn't ancient.

So the President is kind of a dope in this series. He's barely keeping it together and it's really jarring when Sonic the Hedgehog just barges into his limo effortlessly and convinces him to not listen to Eggman and then... is no longer a part of Sonic Adventure 2 after that.

Where he gets to have a little more personality, it's in Shadow the Hedgehog where he's just a complete clown who fanboys over Sonic and Shadow. It's goofy, I don't think any of the humor lands, and he doesn't come across as any sort of competent. And he's also a part of the endgame where he absolved Gerald Robotnik, who almost destroyed the entire planet, of any wrongdoing. Which is weird! But for the most part he's just voice over and jokes. He's also friends with G.U.N. Commander, another charming character.

Oh and in Sonic 2006 he also sends Shadow to rescue Rouge, personally. lol

Basically, he makes for a mildly interesting President stand-in? But it's such a weird choice to make and he just... kinda isn't funny or smart or... anything. We don't really need him around. And we don't need him around anywhere else either.

That's literally all I have to say about The President.

I have no idea what even counts as canon in Sonic the Hedgehog as far as the planet's geography and politics are concerned. Like, are all of those fake countries canon that you visit in the werewolf game? Is the United Federation a consistent part of Sonic lore? Is there a Qrapan, which is just Japan in the Sonic world?

Yes

The human situation is weird. They've definitely moved away from human cities/nations since Unleashed (by Forces, they have an entire world war that doesn't involve any humans, for example), but they also have to exist for numerous reasons. Sonic Team are apparently pushing a two parallel worlds retcon, which is about as good as it's going to get to explain what is basically a change in direction.

Could be worse, we could have Zelda-style splintered timelines.

Sticks the Badger
First Appearance: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

I fucking love Sticks. She's awesome. Get her out of Sonic Boom and into the main series I don't care what you have to do god damn.

Sticks is a brown and orange badger in a caveman-like attire.

So this may be a liiiittle bit unfair, but because the Sonic Boom cartoon is basically almost canon to the Sonic Boom games, and Sticks is more or less identical in those, I can kind of lean on that a little more, because it's essentially just more of the exact stuff that makes Sticks better than the games.

Sticks is basically a rabid badger who is crazy and paranoid and also very excitable and a little quick to lash out sometimes. Honestly, Sticks is probably the most fun inclusion to a Sonic cast since... uh, Sonic Heroes maybe? Sonic Rush? Basically, it's been a minute since we've had a legitimately awesome character join the Sonic universe.

She's one of the shining parts of those 3DS games which... you know, aren't great. They're fine, but nothing I'm looking to ever play again. But it's absolutely tragic that Sticks has been relegated to this, because she's so much fun.

I'm trying not to lean entirely too much on the TV series, but I feel like I should at least bring that up more, because she fits seemlessly with that crew and is constantly really funny. Somehow the paranoia and conspiracy jokes never get old, but I think that's a credit to Sonic Boom's writing in general. People always talk about how great Knuckles is in that series, and he is, but Sticks is my personal favorite from that show.

Concerning how she can fit--I don't think there's a sort of "feral" character in the Sonic series aside from her. She has a unique weapon with her boomerang and is highly acrobatic which I don't know there's any characters that kind of fit that either? And she brings an energy and personality nobody else in that universe can match.

Basically, they need to bring Sticks to the main series. That's just really all there is to it. There's no reason not to, and she can fit in just fine and probably be a stand-out among the rest of the regular cast. I have a little faith because they put her in one of the Mario & Sonic Olympic games, but maybe we can all say a prayer for more Sticks appearances.

Bean the Dynamite
First Appearance: Sonic Fighters

Bean the Dynamite is pretty cool they should do something with him idk.

Bean is a green duck/woodpecker/bird/dynamite that has an ascot, long socks, and sneakers.

Yeah, so fun fact: there's nothing conclusive on what kind of animal Bean is. I remember watching a video on him some time ago and seeing a big long retrospective on wtf he is. You can see it below!

Anyway, Bean has only really been in Sonic Fighters, and he used bombs there a lot. I really don't have much to tell you though. I think he's pretty cool. If they adopt his personality from the comics, I think he'd be a hit. His look is cool, a bomb chucking bird is pretty cool too.

I wouldn't mind seeing him again for the reasons I've stated. I don't have a ton of faith in it. They snuck him into Sonic Mania in a cameo but that's all we're probably going to get. I have a feeling he'd be more interesting than a lot of Sonic's supporting cast though.

Imperator Ix
First Appearance: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

I feel I need to stress once again that Sonic Chronicles is a terrible, god awful game. Not for anything in particular but it's always worth making that reminder.

Imperator Ix actually has a pretty cool design. He's got a white headdress a robe that covers everything but his beady little eyes. He stands out and it's actually good.

Basically, he's a techno wizard in charge of the DaRk EcHiDnAs in Sonic Chronicles and he's got a lot of actually pretty cool moves too. Really, from a style standpoint Ix is pretty great.

In terms of character, he's pretty good here too. I'd say he's another standout of Sonic Chronicles, in that he's actually a maniacal kind of evil with a solid personality. He's unapologetically evil, arrogant, and he tends to back it up usually. He does also try to get Knuckles to join him, but that whole storyline is kind of ridiculous to me. But otherwise he's smart and cunning and his general plot is to just rule the world using the Master Emerald and Chaos Emerald.

I wouldn't mind seeing him or someone similar back in the Sonic franchise. He works and was one of the few enjoyable parts of the game. But again, we likely won't see it because of Ken Penders being highly litigious to defend his weird echidnas.

As a bonus, I think this gets across everything that you need to see to understand why Sonic Chronicles is so bad. Go ahead and watch the final boss fight and the little bit leading up to it. It tells you everything you need to know.

Bark the Polar Bear
First Appearance: Sonic the Fighters

So I had not much to say about Bean the Bird of Uncertain Species, and I have even less to say about Bark the Polar Bear.

He's a yellow-ish polar bear with a beanie, scarf, and heavy duty gloves and boots.

Bark is a big ol' polar bear and I don't really care about him all that much? He has a somewhat unique look, but he doesn't stand out enough that I'm really clamoring for him. And when you factor in he doesn't have much of a personality then... what do you have left? It's nice to have a big dopey animal character that by default is not as awful as Big the Cat, but I don't know where he can really factor in.

I know in the comics he's a silent big boi who cares a little bit more than the company he keeps, but in an actual game that doesn't really make for a cool or interesting character. I don't know if you can factor in Bark at all here. Maybe if you do the whole Team Hooligan thing?

That's all I have to say about Bark.
