Samsung offers a pretty good trade in if you have a relatively recent phone. I got $850 off the S22 Ultra for turning in my Note 20 Ultra, which I got for $600 off by trading in my Note 9, which I'd bought used for $400.

Considering the technology in phones they are actually pretty cheap.

Sadly though phones aren't more modular so you can only pay for what you want and skip what you don't need. Like cameras, i have zero need for them and my phone has like 5 of them.

Because they stoped subsidizing the cost by offering contracts with them. They were always this expensive.

People were like "I just want a phone and not be tied to a contract for 2 years!" Well, you got your wish, now you can pay $1500+ for a phone and still need a service plan to actually use it.

I just stay at the phone store, let the person keep talking, and eventually they give me a free iPhone. It has worked 3 times.

I bought a Pixel 3 like last(?) year before they hit EoL and it's still serving me well.
In the future I will just be buying whatever the oldest Google phone is before it hits EoL. Always super cheap.
Then again I mainly just use my phone as a desk clock.

Pixel 4 right now is $300.

the thing is phone tech is so good that a 200 or 300 dollar phone can do everything you really want so i dont see the big deal with 20000000 dollar phones unless you REALLY need the camera or something
Ive had a galaxy a51 for a couple years and I really dont get what a 1000 more would get me

You don't need a high end phone unless your job requires an iPhone or you're a Vtuber.

You can still get a perfectly functional Motorolla for $100 or so.
I got mine a few years ago for just $50 on sale. Full price (on a prepaid plan, not a contract), so no subsidies.

As someone who had a flip phone for that entire period, paying way too much for my call-only phone plan, and thus subsidizing all these whiny iphone users... GOOD! I'm glad you guys can no longer get ludicrous discounts on the backs on the rest of us. Don't like it? Too fucking bad! I didn't like Verizon charging me a "technology fee" on my flip phone for "internet support services" on a phone that didn't even have fucking internet capabilities. Cry moar that your overpriced slave labor iphone is 4-digits price now. The salty tears are delicious.

I moved to Google phones because Slack dropped support for its app on the ancient android version I was using, and Google has the best Android support.

I don't think I ever spent more than $200 on a phone. Although, prefer smaller phones, so those gigantic premium monstrosities are off my list

I've never seen the appeal of a good smartphone. It does everything worse than a desktop computer or a big-screen TV. It is literally only for phone calls (and an occasional text). Just buy one and use it until it doesn't work anymore (so this obviously excludes Apple products, which go obsolete within a few years of purchase).

Phones are expensive because sadly America consumers are uninformed when it comes to financial matters.

It's the reason most people carry in excess of $6,000 dollars in CC debt and $25,000 plus in student loan debt.

We are a society that worships money and as such we put premium value on anything money can buys.

I have a phone I paid $80 bucks for and it's served me well so I have no reason to plunk $700 to $1,000 for a iPhone or Galaxy.

Contacts are a better option for some people but yeah the latest phone costs a lot. Thankfully I'm happy with my S8 that cost me 100 from my brother years ago. I don't need anything more right now.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. I got it for about $450 (got about $200-$300 off for trading in my old phone).

I've had it for over a year and it's a good phone. Considering how much I use my phone everyday (music, D&D podcasts, youtube, twitter, etc), I've easily gotten my money's worth.
