Specifically, could DK defeat Red's team at the end of Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal?

Arguments for Red:

• there are six Pokemon (see image), all very high levels with powerful abilities
• they are an efficient team, and Red commands them effectively through the power of friendship
• DK is Fighting type, so he only does 1/2 damage to Charizard

Arguments for DK:

• DK could just, like, circumvent the Pokemon and suplex Red into oblivion
• Red probably sends the Pokemon out one at a time instead of all at once
• if DK shoots Red or any of the Pokemon, it's gonna hurt

DK was more than a match for Psycho Mantis but got wrecked by Akuma. Can he handle a small child and an army of battle-hardened animal friends?

Yeah DK just goes up and takes out Red before he can even throw out a pokeball

If DK can attack red directly, red can send out all his Pokmon at once.

I mean, the same argument could be in reverse and espeon will crush DK before DK can move. You have to assume neither party had a surprise here or the fight will be over in seconds

Does Red know that this will be a fight to the death/knock-out or does he think Donkey Kong is a Pokemon?

If the former, then Red will win due to 6v1ing Donkey Kong, if the latter then Donkey Kong probably shrugs off whatever Pikachu does to him before knocking out Red.

Is Donkey Kong trying to fight Red, or is Donkey Kong trying to defeat Red in a Pokemon battle?

In the latter instance, he'd be 1v1 fighting six Pokemon sequentially, and probably lose just by being overwhelmed. In the former, he'd be mainly trying to fend off the Pokemon's attacks as he tried to avoid them and reach Red directly (he could probably KO Red with a single punch). That's the real debatable match, how much could DK defend himself while approaching his target?

Humans are already at the mercy of Pokemon's superior abilities and Red looks like a shrimpy weakling even by Pokemon human standards.

Venusaur and Espeon are also resistant to fighting.

If we take manga Red into account I imagine he's durable enough to take at least one blow from Donkey Kong. It makes sense in the context of Pokemon. If the humans in that universe were as frail as us, the Pokemon would have taken over a long time ago.

We shouldn't be picking and choosing Pokemon mechanics to apply and not apply. If following the mechanics and Red has to send out Pikachu first, then DK shouldn't be able to directly attack Red. If DK can directly attack Red, then Red shouldn't have to follow Pokemon rules/mechanics.

Red is basically the Luster Soldier of Pokemon trainers. He'd stick to established mechanics even if the rules of the fight don't require him to.

I think Donkey Kong just gets beaten through attrition.

DK Vs Red, With Red As An Active Participant - DK wins. Like my man kidnapped Little Mac for a laugh. Pikachu isn't beating Little Mac.

DK Vs Red, Espeon Lead - If Espeon looks into DK mind, it will realize that it's a video game character and its reality is false. DK is completely aware of this fact and is glad to eat bananas, but Espeon is a weird cat who probably won't like that. DK kidnaps Red in the confusion. If Espeon just goes to attack DK, he has some psychic resistance (Returns) and the coconut gun has homing properties, he probably at least beats Espeon, though not without damage.

DK has to survive the guantlet, Pikachu lead - Depends 100% on order - namely, when Blastoise comes out. DK has the power to summon lightning on Storm Hill in Jungle Beat by clapping really hard, so if rain is active, that makes a LOT of his bad match-ups free (Charizard, Espeon is much easier, Venusaur's attacking moves are slowed down considerably). Pikachu and Snorlax are gimmes, but if DK has to fight Espeon and Charizard back-to-back, or 'zard gets Sunny Day up and is followed by Venusaur, I think he eats the L here.

DK has to survive the gauntlet, Charizard lead - Almost definite loss for DK.

DK brings a team of Squitter, Rambi, Squawks, Expresso, Enguarde, and Winky to battle Red's team - I feel as if Squitter is a stronger lead option than Pikachu - Sticky Web helps out against everyone other than Charizard tremendously and Squitter would lower Pika's speed enough that a Rambi sweep might be possible. Blastoise is potentially a spinner who could interrupt, but past Pika, I don't think anyone outspeeds Expresso, who has had everything but the ability to race bred out of him through Cranky Kong's abuse of golden feathers. I know the double flying coverage would normally hurt, but Red having Pikachu as his lead mitigates that - as long as DK gets the Squitter set-up before Rambi comes in and has Squawks to at least weaken Charizard fo Enguarde to finish off, he's golden.

I have a hard time taking animal buddies seriously as an offensive force. Expresso can't even jump on enemies without taking damage! And Engarde is useless outside of water.

Counterpoint: coconut gun. Crystal coconuts. Orange munitions. Sheer unbridled berserker strength if golden banana goes missing.

You can't have one set of rules for DK and another for Red

I'm not saying they wouldn't do damage. I just don't think they're comparable in output to Pokemon. Rambi might bulldoze through some of them, but Expresso isn't an offensive animal buddy except for that racist joke he told at the Friars Club that one time.

But we don't like to talk about that.

Donkey Kong solos

I feel you're underselling effectiveness. Expresso has bred pain out of his system so much he can't feel it underneath his legs, and he's specifically getting beaten by Kritters, who are tasked in Mario Sports games with defending against Mega Strikes and are classified as 'power' characters. I would still put expresso above a regular ostrich, and I would take and ostrich to beat me up. Plus that's underselling Rambi and Enguarde, who have both broken through steel or sheer rock walls on command. Hell, Rambi ran through an entire tornado without being tossed around.

I'm wondering how DK reacts to the presence of Pokemon. Would he just treat them like normal opponents? Would he try to befriend them and/or ride them? Or would he become enraged at this child keeping these animals bound to his will?

Even if a Pokmon is able to prevent him from reaching Red physically, whats stopping DK from shooting Red with his coconut gun?

Psychic types are a fucking nightmare when you remove the rules of Pokemon combat.
