Not to shit on this guy, but. . . what laws, exactly? A gun ban? Background checks which already exist? Red flag laws?

RIP to all involved. Regarding what can be done. I'm not sure how background checks work and I'm not saying this kid had a mental illness but do mental health conditions show up in background checks? If not there is no way around it if they have a clean record. They will pass the check and get a gun. Maybe he is suggesting that mental health records be included on background checks. I realize that brings up all kinds of confidentiality issues but 18 more kids just died.

We need to start diagnosing people with gun obsession with a mental disorder and start treating them. We do this for gambling addicts, drug addicts, etc. Why aren't we doing this for gun addicts?

I'm just speaking as a Canadian and my view of your gun culture. Its absolutely insane to see kida get guns for Christmas and family photos where ppl are all holding guns.

Besides which mental health is an ongoing issue and has been forever. The usa has stopped locking people up but

1 There is not enough affordable care for mental health
2 There are way too many drugs involved in current treatments and many of the drugs are addictive
3 Affordable housing and jobs with benefits including overtime would reduce stress levels---reducing mental health issues
4 More free recreation possibly would reduce stress levels and should be studied.

I was feeling really low about myself because I was numb to the news of this. I had no feeling about it other than Yea, of course. Its Tuesday.
But I now realize something.
Im not desensitized to the deaths and the shootings. I feel devastated for the families and all of the people that are working with the victims trying to save a dying small child on a table, the store owners that opened their doors so that children and teachers could hide, the police officers that responded and had to shoot someone the same age as their children, the teachers
I am sick to my stomach for all of them because those people are us. It can happen anywhere to anyone. Those are my people. The common person that works and sends their children to school.

I am desensitized to the inevitableoutrage, the empty speeches, the airtime, the open mouths and tongue wagging that is nothing more than a loud blast of foul smelling air that bursts out of the bowels of the biggest bull in the history of bulls
Thats what makes me numb because no matter what is said by all these political people, absolutely nothing will change. It never has and it never will.
So as sad as I am at the loss of life, I expect less than nothing to change.
The sad and idiotic fact, is that we will be here again in a few months talking about another one. I even understand why I get so angry at Thoughts and prayers
Because it should have only needed to be said one time maybe a couple.
The fact that its said every other week is a joke.

Parents will be going through this again today. Parents of little kids who had their whole lives ahead of them. These parents sent them off for the last time and didn't know. Parents who were at work or at home and got a call that the school their kid was at has had a shooting. Maybe they didn't even get a call. Maybe they just found out through the news or social media.

A whole lot of parents today are losing their world for absolutely nothing. Coming home to a kids room without the kid who called it home.

Guns have always been around, though. I'm reading up on an apparent assault weapon ban that lasted from the early 90s to early 2000s, but Columbine was during the ban. And wikipedia says, "There is tentative evidence that the frequency of mass shootings may have slightly decreased while the ban was in effect."

Guns are obviously the tool of choice being used to conduct these heinous massacres. But it seems like we really didn't have this issue as often as we do now until the last 10, 15, 20 years.
