Just letting my controller charge first. I have tried repeatedly to play this game, even after getting a PS2, but it was always priced more than I could pay at the time. Someone gave me their copy but the disc was damaged to the point it wouldn't even boot up. Got the remaster collection for PS4 and I'm finally playing it dammit.

If you grind up every Overdrive on all of Yuna's summons (minus one if you get Grand Summon up) Seymour dies trivially even if he automatically chucks them out after their attack.

There are no fights that you cannot do some level of strategy to not really have to care about the Sphere Grid all that much. The closest are the superbosses, but even then Yojimbo is a meme for a reason.

Make sure when you are about to leave a certain beach village, that you search and talk multiple times to the dog.

It has an item that gets gated off later on you can still get it but its a real pain

Dude I wanted to run it again after almost 14 years, but I no longer have a console and my gaming PC is currently fucked without a GPU, building a new one in July, probably.

Go for it, it's one of the best JRPGs ever.

Yes. Every boss can be beaten even in a No Sphere Grid game with a bunch of other restrictions too; beating them with at least some levels will be easy.

Minor, non-story spoilers, there are a few early missables that you may be interested in. (They're not entirely missable, but if you don't get them the first time, it's a major, not-fun-at-all pain to get them later)

There's an alternate Overdrive you can find in Besaid. Try to find it before you leave

Try to get all the "treasure" spheres from each temple before moving on with the game. Getting them all unlocks something really cool. Backtracking to the temples later is nearly impossible

The cutscenes are still unskippable after 20+ years lol.

Prepare to watch the same cutscenes 5~15 minutes cutscenes as you keep trying to beat the same boss.

This is the pinnacle of a game i picked up, think is complete garbage, not exaggerating, yet everyone around me seemed to love it.

I prefer any other FF to these 2 games....

Funny you say that, *tangential rambling warning* because when I think about FF 13 and how it utterly failed to keep my attention by having an absolute confusing mess of an opening act, I realize how valuable it is that all of the preceding games are very good at getting you familiar with the setting and tone in the opening act. You're a mercenary in a dystopian metropolis; you're a student at a magic warrior academy; you're a swashbuckling rogue on a mission to kidnap a princess; etc.

The only arguable outlier in this regard prior to FF 13 was 10: 10 opens very strong in Zanarkand, *mild spoilers because I don't know exactly how far into the opening act TC is* and then the pace slams to a halt once the rug's pulled out from under you and the game has you crawling / swimming around weird sunken ruins with characters who don't speak your language for a couple hours. So I have to ask myself why I hate 13 in this regard yet gave 10 a pass for much the same. And I think the difference is that the game keeps the focus squarely on Tidus, who is a complete fish out of water the whole time, as opposed to jumping back and forth between 3-4 groups of poorly-defined characters who, unlike you, actually seem to know what's going on and are in no particular hurry to explain things to you. And then 10 finds its feet shortly thereafter when Tidus washes up on Besaid, whereas by that point in 13 you're still stumbling around in the dark.

My top tips for a first time player:

  • don't use the expert grid, whoever suggested that is being silly
  • comb every corner of the maps. Obviously.
  • Make sure every character gets a go in every battle, for the most part. This might be annoying in some cases but in most cases you can at least let them use guard for a turn or something. This means every character gets XP each time.

Eh, it's only called Expert Sphere grid not because it makes the game harder, but because only people who know how the Sphere Grid works can take full advantage of it and break the game a whole 2 hours in.

Whether or not the expert grid is easier isn't the issue. The issue is that if you want to fuck around with the sphere grid, the expert grid is great, but if you want to learn to properly understand the sphere grid for the first time, the standard grid that doesn't just throw you into the deep end of the pool is much better.

I strongly second skipping the endgame content on the first playthrough. Many of the minigames required to get the ultimate weapons are among the most rage-inducing thing ever created by the video game medium. Furthermore, the sheer jump in power / damage-dealing necessary to face the optional bosses will absolutely trivialize the regular endgame challenges (once maxed, one of Wakka's overdrives is literally the most powerful attack in franchise history, with Tidus' being a close second).

if you're using each character's trait properly (assuming you build them right) you won't need to do that for every random battles. everyone will get their share of monsters they specialise in. Tidus for swift enemies, wakka for fliers, kimahri for hard shelled, etc.

I remember being in high school and going to Gamestop after getting paid from my movie job. I saw FFX and thought the cover looked interesting so I bought it. Loved it. The only other FF games I played before that were the PC port of FF7 from the 90s but did not make it past the very first fight as I didn't like the way it looked or played, and then FF1 (I think) on Gameboy that a friend from middle school let me borrow.
