This being soccer and soccer, surprise surprise, is a sport.

You can debate whether or not the women's team deserved to be paid the same as the men all you want (they do), but to say "because the women are getting paid the same that the men's national team will fold because the players will play MLS or for other national teams" is fucking stupid.

That's like saying because women's basketball gets paid the same for the Olympics, LeBron James and Kevin Durant are gonna go play for Canada and Mexico. That's not how this works.

Pulisic isn't going to join the German team because he's played and stayed in Germany for x number of years or whatever country he plays his league games in. Stop talking like you know what you're talking about.

and it's not even that common. You need dual citizenship and you'd only qualify if you have never played in an official tournament game.

Yes, the US has actually been ok all things considered. It had a rough time last qualification but its been consistent for about 25-30 years.

We've never won a world cup but i think only 5-6 countries actually have.

More people would rather watch the American mens lose 4-0 to Portugal to see Ronaldo than see the women's team with Rapinoe win a championship.

That tells you why the men's team despite sucking get a bigger payout.

End of the day, the stars sell the game.

It's all revenue based. The fact that the Americans get wrecked against the top teams is enough for the usnt to show the men's worth because despite not having any top talent themselves, they draw more ratings so more sponsorship deals.

You don't get that with the women's team cause no one cares about the players.

2. In the men's game, players receive the majority of their income from their club teams, not national teams.

The US drew Portugal back in 2014 and that drew 18 million and yes that was entirely on Ronaldo.

Despite that, people will tune in to watch that more than women's football.

I wasnt comparing that.
My point was that the pay is based on viewership/revenue generated.

The women's team is hindered by it because of outright awful competition. They don't get viewership and because of that limited sponsorship deals.

The whole thing is dumb but whatever.

The mens team is not going to be disbanded. They are ranked pretty high in world rankings, are very young, and have a legit opportunity in both the 22 and 26 WC to compete. The guys team has more potential than they have had in a very long time (some people argue ever).

And that's a very poor take as well.
The level of competitive in women's football is nonexistent. The US women's team win a ton of games outright blowing out their competition.
The men's team don't go far in the world cup but they at least keep things somewhat close score-wise against the top teams of the world.

Pay is based almost entirely on the minimum wages it takes to get someone to show up.
It loosely correlates to revenue, in that a chef at some five-star restaurant is going to be paid a hell of a lot more than a burger-flipper at McDonalds.

how much anyone gets paid is a negotiation between the employer and the employee of compensation for the work provided. In the case of professional athletes its a negotiation between their representation and the team/league.

this reminds me of the argument that the WNBA should make more despite the league not being profitable and being subsidized by the NBA

to summarize:

US men's team ad revenue is, as discussed, very frequently driven upward by things totally unrelated to men's team

US women's team ad revenue is, as discussed, very frequently driven downward by things totally unrelated to women's team

if the US men's team were winning games and drawing their own audiences, I expect they'd not agree to share revenue. they're not, so of course they said yes to this deal, because although it's worse for them, the whole thing is a pretty sweet deal for them, and they'd like to keep it.

Whenever I feel bad about myself I can look back on this thread and see the losers getting angry about this and feel better about myself.

The punch line in all of this is that americans generally don't care about soccer in the first place.

This is great news, and very deserved.

Only in the US though, your men's football team fucking sucks, the women are among the 3 best teams ever.
