If anyone wants a real good found footage film that wasn't on the list, I 1000% recommend Be My Cat: A Film for Anne.

It's free on Youtube and it's one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen honestly.

One more thing I wanted to note about V/H/S is how it sort of predicted the analog horror trend that's one of the biggest movements in internet horror right now. Stuff like Local58, Mandela Catalogue, and The Backrooms are presented in these faux-VHS and other old-fashioned styles and I have to think V/H/S helped edge that along just a little bit - and this stuff gets 10s of millions of views on Youtube with a big community surrounding it too.

One of my problems with V/H/S though is that barely any of it looks analog, only the final segment and the wrap-around. The rest looks low-rent digital which defeats the point of the premise. Imagine if the WNUF Halloween Special looked digital, it would be just as bad an idea.

I forgot, that's another one that could have been on this ranking list that a lot of people like.

Oh yes that bugged the hell out of me too. Especially the Skype one - like how the hell did that end up on a VHS tape?

And oh man, I absolutely LOVE WNUF Halloween Special. Of course I would've liked to put it on the list but I would've had trouble justifying it. We need to do a cult classics list.

Yeah, this as well. I was confused through much of it because it defeats the point of the premise.

I was kinda glad they didnt. It already looked bad enough because they tried to be authentic with the shaky cam at times so Im glad they didnt do analog on top
of that for the whole movie.

(Of course their compromise of doing digital but ugly is probably an even worse idea)

And yeah the zoom call being on VHS was unintentionally funny. Im ok with them not going for 100% authenticity and letting the individual film makers do what they want, but it just felt a little silly when the connecting theme was VHS tapes.

It looked worse at first glance. It's got a solid top 10 or so, maybe. A few drastically overrated films on it and films that are questionably not even horror.

@Snake5555555555 So you've done 90s/00s/10s horror now. 80s horror is the next obvious one, but personally the 70s are my favorite decade for horror. I can't find the old topics so I can't see how long ago the 90s/00s were (and when a horror topic would come up next), but that would be a ranking topic I'd be all over. A quick and dirty 30 films I quickly thought of:

1) The Exorcist
2) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3) Black Christmas
4) Suspiria
5) Deep Red
6) The Brood
7) Invasion of the Body Snatchers
8) Halloween
9) Dawn of the Dead
10) House (Hausu)
11) Carrie
12) Don't Look Now
13) Bay of Blood
14) Daughters of Darkness
15) Deathdream
16) The Tenant
17) The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue (Let Sleeping Corpses Lie)
18) The Wicker Man
19) The Last House on the Left
20) Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key
21) God Told Me To
22) Nosferatu
23) The Driller Killer
24) The Omen
25) The Amnityville Horror
26) Martin
27) Phantasm
28) Zombie (Zombie Flesh Eaters)
29) The Hills Have Eyes
30) Sisters

Just a suggestion for the future, you did a great job on this one!

80s has plenty of good options, it's just that decade was so dominated by franchises and sequels. That, and the vast majority of good output came just from the US, whereas the 70s you had US/Italy/UK/Canada/Spain/Japan all doing great work. You have a bigger pool of work to pull from.

Thanks smark! 70s are my favorite decade for horror too, but more likely than not I will do 80s horror next just to keep going chronologically backwards.

2000s was done around 2016, and 1990s was done around 2019. So three year gaps between all projects.

I do have preliminary lists for all decades, they're not finalized by any means, but this is my current 70s list:

1. The Dunwich Horror (1970)
2. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
3. Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)
4. The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
5. Ben (1972)
6. Blacula (1972)
7. The Last House on the Left (1972)
8. Tales from the Crypt (1972)
9. Don't Look Now (1973)
10. The Exorcist (1973)
11. The Wicker Man (1973)
12. Black Christmas (1974)
13. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
14. Young Frankenstein (1974)
15. Deep Red (1975)
16. Jaws (1975)
17. Carrie (1976)
18. The Omen (1976)
19. Eraserhead (1977)
20. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
21. House (1977)
22. Suspiria (1977)
23. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
24. Halloween (1978)
25. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
26. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
27. The Amityville Horror (1979)
28. The Brood (1979)
29. Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
30. Phantasm (1979)

Your list has some solid picks too that I would heavily consider.

I wish you had submitted a list Corrik!

Also, heres what should be a 2020s list so far, you can refer to this in 8 years:

The Invisible Man (2020) - Box-office smash, critically acclaimed
Host (2020) - First film entirely produced in the pandemic, critically acclaimed
Saint Maud (2020) - Critically acclaimed
Possessor (2020) - Critically acclaimed and also by Cronenbergs son
A Quiet Place Part II (2021) - First big horror film post-reopening, critically acclaimed
Candyman (2021) - Revitalised the franchise, critically acclaimed
Lamb (2021) - Oscar-nominated
X (2022) - Box-office hit on a tiny budget, critically acclaimed
Fresh (2022) - Streaming hit, critically acclaimed

I spoiler tagged that last one because its best to not know its a horror going in lol.

Would also be nice to get a Fear Street on there but its hard as the trilogy is so interlinked. Other small films you can go for include Relic, Censor, His House and more.

Also, a bunch of those were directed by women compared to three on this list. The current decade has seen a ton of female film-makers enter the genre to great success. It kind of speaks to the boys club comment from earlier. Thankfully that seems to be changing!

@Snake5555555555

I Spit On Your Grave is an extremely influential film although I don't know how well it would go over here. You trended away from brutal horror for the most in the 2010s list to be a little more palatable.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is good but you would also probably have some people here calling it a movie for pedophiles

And as always, there's the question of how much campy/comedic horror to include. Dr. Phibes is a lot of fun though and Vincent Price should get some representation.

Thats what I noticed too. I went back last night to check 2000s and 90s lists and saw they were both 40. I kinda wish this was as well because there were at least 10 really good ones that got cut.

I think 21 is a bit excessive but there are a handful that I ranked low that were really well received so I could see how you get there.

Like I said, great list overall imo

Possessor wasn't as good as it was hyped unfortunately.

As far as Last Night in Soho goes, I loved the idea and the atmosphere of it (and good god I am in love with Anya Taylor-Joy now), but I think it doesn't nail the landing / eventual plot. I think a better premise existed there somewhere. (Also I am pretty sure it has a plot hole)

To comment on a few things from today because this is super active for a ranking topic that's only had 2 rankings posted so far!

Really want to see Siren; doubt it'll be a standout film on its own but Lily is too great to pass it up

2010s is all in all probably my favorite genre for horror. There are some real duds to be sure, but this decade changed the genre in such new and inventive ways that are frankly the most significant alteration to horror as a whole that we've had since the rise of the 80s slasher

2020s list is way too early to predict but I'm preemptively throwing a bone to Old, which simultaneously saw a return to form for Shyamalan, became a mainstream meme, and bordered the line between genuinely intriguing horror and laughably bad

Everything I've seen about it seems really interesting and cool, plus the main character's kind of a badass.

The Hunt has Emma Roberts and Betty Gilpin and thus can't possibly suck.

I haven't seen it or know much about it, but I'm sticking to that opinion until I am inevitably proven wrong when I finally see it in five years.

I think Betty Gilpin is very good in it but the extent of its political tribalism satire is just a bunch of smug cheap caricatures mined from the most absurd posts you'd see on like Twitter or internet comment sections. It never really works or is all that funny because it's so content to reach for low hanging fruit and it doesn't even have the convictions to go all the way in the end anyway.

Pretty sure I've never seen Emma Roberts in a good movie. Palo Alto might be all right though. I haven't seen that yet tbf

EDIT: The Blackcoat's Daughter is very good. Nevermind.

But have you ever seen The Art of Getting By? Ooof. I saw that in theater for free and I still overpaid.
