Looking at his recent uploads, he's at least not as click bait-y as something like The Quartering, but he apparently spoke positively of Run Hide Fight which is a huge red flag

This is also a guy who has a video called "Why Modern Movies Suck - They're Written By Children", which is followed up almost immediately by "Ghostbusters Afterlife - A Flawed but Sincere Movie for the Fans"

Obviously I'd need to actually watch the shit to have a more informed opinion about his views, but at a glance he looks like a typical right-leaning pop culture review channel

I discovered him a few months ago. I watched one vid criticizing modern movies and it made sense to me. I watched another. There was some complaints about "wokeness" in it, but eh "wokeness" should be criticized. Then I watched another and his personal politics came more to the forefront and he came off as whiny. I would eventually learn that was actually the majority of his videos and normal ones like the first vid I saw was rare. >_>

yeah... like dude seriously needs to let it go. And this is coming from someone who wasn't particularly impressed with her performances or her off-screen stuff. It's like "OK dude, seriously, move on." It's ok to not like an actor.

Hes a bit farther to the right than I would prefer but he brings up good points at times, especially in his Star Trek/Wars commentaries.

Actually has some decent analysis but is too bogged down by culture war grievances.

His video "Defeminizing female characters" is really having himself and his audience show their colors. Condemning Scarlett Johansson for wanting a movie more focused on a human story for Black Widow instead of just her sex appeal, calling it "biting the hand that feeds her." He asserts that she only got any roles because "she was beautiful, and now that she's hitting 'the big 4 0', it's a dwindling asset" which must be why she wants a solo movie to be character-driven.

Claims that wanting that makes no sense anyway because "isn't the whole point of the Black Widow character to be a classic Femme Fatale?" Can't comprehend that interrogating a long running female archetype of male-focused action movies might be worthwhile or lead to an interesting story.

Reaaaaally classic "anti-sjw" internet rhetoric coming out here. "She's sexy because she uses her sexiness to disarm men and gain a tactical advantage over them." This is really textbook stuff from online reactionaries: a sex object character's sex appeal is used in the plot, so they are a good character.

Of course, this argument fails because a woman's job or utility to the plot has very little to do with the actual extent of their characterization. The "damsel in distress" is a classic action trope wherein a woman is a primary motivator of the plot, but typically damsels have almost no agency or character development because their role is to be tied to a pillar calling out the hero's name.

The question isn't whether Black Widow uses her sexiness functionally in Iron Man 2, it's "what can you tell me about Black Widow in IM2 aside from her sexiness?" If your answer is "not much", then you'll find that Scarlett is right after all!

There's nothing too rambling about this quote so I'm forced to conclude that, when women ask not to be treated only like sex objects, CriticalDrinker chooses to just hear bleats and baas instead.

It's hard to get into the heads of these kinds of dudes. Back in the day I think it was easier to call it reactionary behavior to pop culture works they enjoyed being provocatively labeled as 'sexist' or what have you. But according to the author, this whole video was sparked by him reading this one interview excerpt of Scarlett Johansson reflecting on her minor role in a movie she herself describes as "really fun". He's mad at just how an actress felt about her own depiction. To him, it's as though because she was paid, she sold the right to have an opinion about her own works, and is now out of line to talk about wanting anything else in her career. Jeez.

Tl;Dr CriticalDrinker and his audience make a strong argument that they're misogynists who want pretty women to shut up.

I can't say I 100% disagree with his assessments on some movies. But like they say, a broken clock is always right twice a day. Anytime he brings up a good point, he ALWAYS has to mention politics in there. He always has to complain about diversity or if there's a strong female lead who isn't a damsel in distress. I don't know if he knows the hypocrisy in that.

This was more or less my experience, too.

He's a hit and miss youtuber with an uncomfortable gimmick that focuses a little too much on "The Message" in order to try and make a compelling point.

He's spot on in certain videos, but falls flat completely on others.

And his Brie Larson obsession is weird.

Funny dude

Like most of the nu-critic crew that spawned with TLJ, they are bad critics who view discussing film as a venue for culture war issues relating to their politics. Because they examine it through this lens, they ultimately mostly ingest & review blockbuster films, and derive their opinions of film based on this and their childhood nostalgia. They do not seek to be challenged and react with rage when they are challenged by properties they have invested their personality to.

I'm not even defending TLJ here, either. I didn't like it. But I also don't think film antagonists have become worse across the board because Kylo Ren sucks, unlike Critical Drinker, who is a pleb with no understanding of most film.

Basically, he's an embarassing manchild. They can certainly make criticisms of movies that are valid, but he's not a real critic because fundamentally his love of film is a desire to experience them like rollercoasters on the whole more than anything that can make you think. Doesn't mean he can't praise/like good films, but he's slanted heavily towards the "You took my toy away" side of manchild critics.
