There's a dude at my local subway that thinks I'm crazy for ordering my tuna melts from them with the bread "toasted" three times because I like there to be actual crunch to the bread with tuna melt. To me personally, "toasted" doesn't mean "browned a little" it means "crunchy"

Toasted? Browned a little (or anything beyond that).

Toasted to my liking? Also just browned a little.

I'm not a fan of toasted sandwiches at all other than grilled cheese (which is sort of a different scenario), but for me something "toasted" is generally just a little browned and slightly crispier. Anything too dark or too crunchy is more just burned to me.

It's kind of like a question of toaster settings. My toaster goes from 1-5, but I don't think I've ever gone beyond 3. But I'm sure there are people who set it to 5 and maybe even put it back in for a little longer after.

Toasted is basically firm up the bread a bit so that it doesn't get soggy. Like when I toast my hamburger buns, I don't even really "brown" them, I just want them firm so that the burger juice doesn't all soak in and make the burger nasty.

Anything where the bread starts flaking or becomes like charcoal is too much. That is essentially burning it.

To me it's a sandwich that's toasted in a convection oven after assembly.

If you do cheese burgers. Do cheese side down and it'll be a barrier for the juices going into the meat

toasted is when

a) the butter on it is wholly melted (butter not required, but it's the right temp)
b) the bread has no flop if you wag it around

If it doesn't have crunch, it hasn't toasted, but if by crunch you mean the whole thing is rigid and breaks up like aerated charcoal, that's burnt.

Uhhh idk how to quantify.

my toaster goes from 1-5. Slices of bread i usually put at about 2.5 I also like these thin round slices of bread and for those I use a 2.8.

ive never gone to a subway or potbelly or Jersey Mike and had my sandwich sufficiently toasted. Would like it more crunchy for sure.

A sandwich where the slices of bread have been toasted before building the sandwich or a sandwich where the built sandwich is toasted after building. It's not that complicated.

If the bread is floppy, it's not toasted. Beyond that, it's just a matter of how well-done you like it. I don't like my bread charred outright, but other than that I don't really care much... oh, but if it's just PB+J sort of sandwich, I guess I prefer a lighter toast.
