If it's different for multi-player and single specify.

For me for single player I like if sorta like borderlands 2 where bosses/named enemies have a slightly higher drop rate for items but other all its still pretty rare.

For multi-player games I don't like time gates at all but the drop rate of Diablo 2 where odds are there's at least a few things you'll never even see offered for trade.

Ideal is where I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.

Borderlands 2 had horrendous drop rates, especially for a single player game. Borderlands was much better when it came to drops. Sure, you couldn't hunt down a specific item, but you could actually find legendaries at a decent rate and upgrade your weapons. In 2, some of the drops were so damn rare, that it was a huge pain just to find them once, let alone get a new copy after you'd leveled up some.

borderlands is probably the worst series. the more you play, the worse it gets. just an awful game.

If I'm grinding out something with little to no challenge, that takes a moment to do, for over ten minutes, for just one item to appear that I need, then I will feel like time is wasted. Most MMOs are outright terrible about this, and even FFXIV has its pratfalls on droprates.

I get wanting people to stick around longer or play longer, but we are past the time when people have realized they value their time and energy. Droprates do not have to be 100% all of the time, but there gets to be a point where the infamous rng element grows unwelcome and turns the game into a drag people are less inclined to waste time on. So, sure, some folks might stick around to get that rare item, but everyone else will move on eventually.

It's like in FFXIII where there were a couple items with allegedly 12% of a drop chance, but it often felt like less often when we needed so many for the final weapons and moneymaking. It's like numerous relic-related drops in Final Fantasies XI or XIV, though the latter has gotten better about it. It's like this in other JRPGs, often times.

99.44%.

If I want an item, I want it to drop now. I don't really want to farm for hours (or more) to get something.

Honestly, it's part of why I like games with fixed rewards or items placed/sold in specific locations where you can find what you're looking for with a 100% success rate so long as you know where to look (and that's what wikis are for). It makes it much easier to get what I want and ignore what I don't, rather than having to grind for hours and wade through a sea of vendor trash just to get one specific piece of armor or some cosmetic item or worst of all, something I need as a quest item to advance the storyline.

I might have a different opinion if I played anything other than story-intensive single-player games, but I rarely do. So I don't.

If it's a quest item or basic material/item/equip I generally want to have the required amount in about 5-15 battles. If it's an end-game material I need like 5 of then I'm willing to put in like 30 minutes. Same as if it's an ultimate equipment drop. If it's more than that then these days I'll just use cheat engine or do without.
