a lot of physical orders have been shipped out already, so it's likely you can find some already up for sale at walmarts or whatever, but the digital version should open up a little over a day from now

I haven't been following it, did the performance issues seen in the Japanese version ever improve at all?

they released a patch that stabilized FPS and we're getting that patch day 1 apparently, but being 3d the load times are still gonna be way worse than rf4. the game does cache the previous zone you were in, but loading a new zone takes like 5 seconds or so

it's a 3d game in the switch, it will have performance issues intrinsically

5 seconds isn't too bad. Some of the early impressions I was seeing sounded way worse than that. That's good to hear.

More than that, it's in Unity, which inherently doesn't work well with the Switch. That's a bit of a questionable design decision and I'm not sure why they did that, but it's a little late to change it.

That or Switch, depending on your preferred platform. I'd wait for both a sale and for you to be in the mood to play it, though, rather than rushing out to grab it just for the sake of having it.

Still need to get married and finish leveling+shipping all the crops in RF4... At this point it's probably best for me to hop into bed every day if I don't get a town events for the day

As far as RF4, I'd say it's a pretty even split between the two, alongside the relationship building.

Farming can get pretty involved with different soil stats like quality, growth speed, health, etc, so it's not exactly a "light" farming sim.

yaknow fertilizer is a thing

there's fieldwide fertilizer and shit now so you can do it faster afaik

Should I buy this instead of 4? I didn't have a Switch at the time 4 was rereleased.

4's going to be a lot more of a stable experience with more content (they reused all the assets from RF1-3 and ended up with a gigantic pool of bosses), but 5 is 3d

so probably 4 if you've never played it. but it's not like there's a direct main plot to follow between them, because 50 years have passed and the only recurring characters are the two villagers who pop in if you have rf4 save data on your switch

That's great, all games should have needlessly complicated sub-mechanics so turbonerds like me can spend way too much time min-maxing them.

And by that, I mean not all games, because non-turbonerds should be able to enjoy things as well even though they are unable to manage my galaxy brain level of soil management.

performance is pretty terrible, but this is still about what i expected

all of the game's systems are exactly the same and it's actually kind of marvelous how they got so much from rf4 to transition into 3d. like, i'm still in spring, but 3d bean toss contest! it even has the exact same bean pattern (from what I can remember of the first 30s~ anyways)!

the only significant chunk of content that's missing from 4 is the sheer number of bosses because that's way more effort and rf4 reused basically all rf1-3 bosses, but still

game's pacing is kinda fucked though, i'm either doing steamrolling or getting oneshot (on hard). also you can't get a flower show to sell seeds until way later in the game. which is really fuckin strange considering they're heavily used in low level chemistry

edging closer to the end of the game, now at level 80

my crafting skills are all still 10-30 wtf

beat the postgame dungeon

time to become infinitely rich and buy the tens of thousands of wood and stone at overpriced prices

i've just been really free this week

at least i'm a veritable fountain of protips now if one aspect of the game is pissing you off and you want to make it easier

it's not a matter of time, i have an abundance

but it just feels like a lame harvestmoon/rune factory knockoff

i think the transition to 3d was not good

it also ran really slow and i just don't like that

there were some growing pains but it still ended up being a good game; combat's better, i like the characters a lot more, there's a bunch of QoL they added in like auto item pickup, you can manage large farms more easily, being able to equip and swap between a weapon and a farm tool quickly, easier mass crafting, more touch screen support for menus where it makes sense

if anything its main downside is that it almost painfully adheres to rf4. like the requests are almost exactly the same, the festivals are almost exactly the same but 3d, all the subsystems are exactly the same (but i love the subsystems)

rf4 is my most replayed game (cuz its the best game of all time) so rf5 still feels really good to me. like none of my past experience was wasted, but there's still a lot new to explore

the performance issues do suck booty but i did notice that the first dungeon's performance in particular was absolute trash for some reason. and the town+surrounding areas is always gonna be terrible. but the other dungeons and zones seem to be mostly fine

How slow is it exactly?

20-25fps in town usually, 5~ second load times during screen transitions (it does cache your last area tho), 20-30s to load the game up for the first time

RF4S had actually nonexistent load times (you could soft reset and load a file within like 5 seconds of mostly menuing), so it feels pretty bleh
