Gets the benefit of being the first Fire Emblem game I played. The story is the standard fare of series' plot or at least for me it is the one that started all the FE tropes and cliches but it is done well. There was a genuinely shocking moment that has still stuck with me over the years and I liked the characters for the most part in the game.

I love the game, one of the greats-- but not for the story. The plot is inoffensive but almost painfully generic. That's not to say it's all bad.

Some of my favorite video game characters are in this game, but they are limited to support conversations for characterization as they're relegated to minor side roles in a hurry, and it lacks the raw number of conversations available in more recent entries. Now don't get me wrong what scant support convos are in this game are probably the best in the series of what I've played, but some characters only have like 3 support options so it's pretty limited.

In terms of actual featured characters Hector is great but can't really carry the show by himself.

First 10 Chapters were probably the most interesting story-wise.

My opinion of this one has only improved over time from playing more FEs and other RPGs. It avoids a lot of the standard clichs of the series and genre because it's about a bunch of shadow conflicts instead of outright war or direct confrontation with the major villains. Definitely the least "generic FE story" of the whole series. It's kind of creepy and dark and is simultaneously the FE with some of the fewest fantasy elements and also some of the most major ones. It also does a great job telling the same story from two perspectives and keeping it interesting despite following the same events. It's a big balancing act and I think it works.

Probably deserves lower but I'm biased because I think it's the first game story I ever got really into. I think several games in the series have much more interesting conflicts (especially the Radiance duology and Genealogy/Thracia), though the cast of FE7 is pretty endearing and it does a lot with a relatively short script.
