There were just so many other better JRPGS by the time SO1 came out, I mean it came out after pretty much every single SNES JRPG, hell PS1 was even out before this game, and even when not comparing it to them it still really isn't that great of a game tbh. The concept was the only cool about it. Star Ocean 2 then comes out a mere 2 years later to be one of the best games on the Ps1 library, and one of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion. Even if someone isn't a fan of it, its hard to argue its originality even by today's standards.
