Lost Levels didn't come out in America for the NES, and the 'American' SMB 2 was what Miyamoto was originally developing as the true sequel anyway. So you can't argue that Lost Levels is the 'definitive' #2 in the series any more than I can argue that SMB 2 is.

There is so many good options mentioned but I am going to go with Smash Bros Melee. The look, controls, content, and following garnered by that game is insane compared to its original. Smash 64 was good but Melee was miles above. You could tell that Smash 64 was a game they kind of threw together and Melee had attention and polish.

Mortal Kombat to MK2

-increased playable roster from 7 to 12

-3 secret characters

-most fighters have two character specific fatalities(Shang Tsung has 3), stage fatality(done on 2 stages), a friendship, and babality

-Shang Tsungs morphing ability

-a universal Acid Pool stage fatality

-better graphics and sound

-the consoles each had their own plethora of secrets

Was a great time to be a fan.

Metal Gear plays like you'd expect from a 1980's PC action game.

Metal Gear 2 is honestly not that far removed from Solid on the playstation. In fact a good number of sequences from the former were pretty much lifted and remade for Solid as-is, just in 3D lol.
