Ask them if they are willing to pay for gas, if not say you cant make it

Is it just me or does 20 mins sound like the absolute min you have to drive anywhere at this point for anything, like, even a taco?

Seriously if you aren't willing to commit to driving 20 mins every so often, don't freaking volunteer, cause they are depending on you/expecting you and your just wasting their time (probably of other people volunteering as well) if you don't show up because of a 20 mins drive.

Yeahhh I wouldnt do that unless they reimbursed me for gas and paid me for my time. And a little extra because that puts miles on the car too which means itll take that much quicker for an oil change.

Hmm true, 20 miles might take more than 20 minutes....thought still it's not THAT far...if it was just once and awhile, but yeah if you didn't know you were gonna have to do that when you volunteered and you don't, just let em know your not down for driving that far but are willing to help locally.

For reference: this isn't a volunteer job like one where you clean stuff up (though we do stuff like that) or feed the poor. This is a job where I basically run the part of my school that organizes that kind of stuff. It shouldn't be too hard to make the ORGANIZATION meetings virtual.

Depends on where you live.

There are places in the US where you have to drive like 40 minutes just to go to the grocery store. There are also places where literally everything you can possibly imagine needing or wanting is within a 15 minute drive.

This used to come up in the Geek topics, when Wave mentioned he had to drive like 2 hours to go to the nearest movie theater, and I'd point that I couldn't imagine being willing to drive more than 2 hours for anything less than life-saving surgery.

I can get to my local movie theater in about 15 minutes. I can get to my grocery store in about 10. I can get to my local convenience store, gas station, or McDonalds in about 5. I rarely drive more than 20 minutes for any shopping, unless I'm going somewhere specific and specialty-based.
