Sharks. The main deck is just very straightforward, any good Fish or Fish support made it in. The extra deck was a struggle to the end. And Ice Princess Zereort is accidentally unsummonable. I'll call that Kamishiro sibling moral support. Anyway this deck was so good that I'll happily use it for the N/R event once we get that.

Reg 2-0 Tangy for Modern, so I take that one.

The HoF pick has to be Domain, especially since Vanity's Fiend wasn't a huge player this time around (Majesty's Fiend kinda was though)

so here's the randomizer process i had in mind. i looked around and this looks to be the easiest for the time being. it will be on DUELING BOOK.

Steps:

Go to https://ygoprodeck.com/card-database/deck-prices/
Tools -> Randomizer Settings -> Highlander. Then Tools -> Randomize. You should get a 60 card main deck & 15 card extra deck.
Export -> To .ydk Deck File. Save the file.
Log in to your DuelingBook account.
Deck Constructor -> Import Deck. Select .ydk file.

You will most likely get some unplayable cards (no available targets, etc.). There are also a handful of cards that the randomizer could give you that don't exist on DuelingBook so you may end up with less than 60 cards. You can move unplayable/unwanted cards to your side deck. I ended up with 42 card main deck for my trial run. If people end up with less than 40, we can supplement that with another randomizer.

If anybody wants to test the format either today/during the week/weekend we can try.

Modern:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/0/7/AAcxR5AADBoT.jpg

seemed like Shine Ball was glued to my opening hand at times. i think this was the deck to finally convince me to really try to go for 40 even instead of always leaving it a bit over like i always do. Lightning Storm should probably get cut; opened with it i think literally every game/can't do shit with it going first and i have too many continuous stuff and the one game it was good seems like the exception.

XARL:

summoning the big guy from the deck was funny at least.

Being locked to only 60 cards is a real bummer. With that limit, it seems like you're in serious danger of getting stuck with cards in your Main Deck that literally can't be played. Maybe if it were doubled up?

Ideally I would also have wanted the initial number of cards you get to be higher but that's just what the randomizer gives you and this is what seems the most convenient at the moment. It's minimal effort and you won't have to do any searching to add cards/look up their effects. I can have a deck ready in like 5-10 minutes. Not a very good deck but a deck nonetheless.

My original idea was to put a list of cards through randomizer and give everyone who signs up a list of like 100 cards but I ended up going with this at first because

1. you would have to look up every card;
2. the deckbuilding process would take much longer
3. the randomizer actually gives you a starting ratio of MON/SPL/TRP which the 100+ card method wouldn't guarantee.
4. i don't have a databae at the ready yet past GOAT era.

Most likely you will end up with a monster-heavy lineup though since most unplayables would be archetype-specific spells/traps. Even if monsters can't activate effects related to archetypes, the vast majority of them are still technically "playable."

I may end up being wrong but I do think at the moment, from having run the randomzier a couple times, the case where you'll end up with less than 40 playable cards won't be that frequent. And like I said, even that does end up being the case, we can supplement that with another randomizer. I would rather not though because that involves more steps and I want convenience (in terms of preparation/time investment) to be the primary feature for a format that's going to be jank as hell anyway.

What I think we could also do is, similar to our current rarity lock formats, have a list of "free cards" that everyone can include. Even broken cards like Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity because I suspect they would be significantly less broken in this type of format and would just speed things up.

I'll post a couple results of before/after deck pics from some runs.

If anybody knows of a better randomizer, we can take a look at that too. I do really like the convenience of just exporting the list since just looking up the cards you get from a random list and figuring out quickly from a glance if it's playable is significantly less time than typing every single card.

I should also note that the randomizer linked above has other settings like "Normal" where it can give you playsets of some cards (i.e. 3 copies rather than 60 one-ofs) + a side deck but i found that you could just end up with 3x unplayables instead of one. "Highlander" setting is the true random which is more along the lines of what I had in mind anyway.

There's also an archetype setting where you can supposedly get randomized sets of cards from up to three archetypes but it's not solely pulling from those pools (you will get random vanilla one-ofs and 3x copies of unplayable extra deck monsters, etc.) so a lot of the times i tried it, the decklists looked like more of a mess if you can believe it.

Side decks are "unplayable" cards (archetype-specific, no available targets, etc.) and on some occasions technically playable but too bad to consider. If there were spell/trap cards that had one or two valid targets, I kept them in even if impractical. Process took around 5-10 minutes for each deck, quickly glancing at effects.

Deck 1:

I am liking the idea of the "free cards" more and more though.

Most card effects were given a very cursory glance. And there are some cards I missed taking out like the Terraforming in one of them but I more or less ended up with around 41-44 technically playable cards every time.

I think if there's a solid free card list, we can patch up most issues.

Just to be clear here, is the intent to use as many of the cards as possible and only remove the ones that are actually unplayable, or can you trim it down as you like?

you could choose as you want within your pool. like, if i was actually playing with these, i'd move it down to 40 for sure. i just left it at those numbers to show how many were technically playable.

if we have like 5 or so free cards, there's more flexibility and compensation for some of those really bad cards you could get. or like in the case of the first deck where i had 15 level 5+ monsters. but the appeal is just quick and dirty play which is again why i would want to stress convenience.

so in that hypothetical case where we had 5 free cards, you would be picking 35 from your initial pool of ~60. again, sometimes the randomizer will give you cards that aren't on DB but it's around that amount.

I could easily see it being fun, but it doesn't seem like the available generator will produce fun decks.

I'm taking a look at this site here:
https://db.ygoprodeck.com/pack-open/

You can choose Custom Draft and open a certain number of packs. I was trying 10, which seems to end up with 60-70 cards in total.

It opens packs rather than creating a truly random selection, but the effect seems similar with a bit less chaos.

I've been a bit preoccupied so I actually want to shelve the Randomizer idea for a bit and do a general rarity lock next week to coincide with the N/R festival. When the leak first came out I didn't realize it would be so soon.

And then the following tournament I want to finally do no rarity limit Synchro/Xyz era. Hopefully there would be enough interest by then.

Also as I previously said my work schedule has changed so I no longer have Saturdays free. I hope Sundays will still work for everyone.

Alright I'm back from vacation.

Definitely like the idea of the rarity lock and the no rarity limit. Not as interested in randomizer as I don't think I'll have any fun with it. The deck building process is a huge part of the intrigue for me in these alternative formats.

Sundays should work for me going forward, but I'll probably be more sporadically available throughout the day as opposed to locked in for the entirety of it, as Sundays are the days where I catch up on work for the week.

This is an interesting question. I'm not sure I would limit the XYZ Era to, "anytime before Pendulums", because XYZ was still an integral part of the game post-pendulums. I'd probably say anytime before Link Summoning, and also say that you can't use Pendulums, which will still give access to the XYZ cards of the era while not going against the spirit of the tournament, but anything is fine with me.

I think technically the correct terminology is Zexal/5Ds or whatever the anime airing at the time was. I just say Synchro/XYZ as shorthand because I can never remember which anime name it is.

What I meant was everything pre-Duelist Alliance (Aug 2014). It would basically be like our previous rarity lock tourneys timeline wise but no rarity limit. Although if including later cards is something people want we can do that or a next time format

A generic rarity lock is fine, I'll just play the same deck most likely. I could try playing an oldschool Synchron deck for the Xyz era format. I think the deck I was actually playing back then was mostly Fire Kings, but that's kinda hard to make and probably loses a lot with Blaster banned.

RIP Monarchs then lmao. If it extended out to 2016 (That's when Domain, Ehther and Erubus were released) I could literally just play my main deck and only have to replace the Anchamoufrites. Which would be funny, but probably rather against the spirit of the format. Meanwhile, 2014 would require a fair bit of rework to compensate for not having those three (And I'd also lose access to the Mega Monarchs, making things even more difficult), and I'd rather just play Utopia instead.

The idea of focusing more on the era (Similar to the first classic format we did) rather than just the archetype restriction is a fun change of pace though.

That works I guess. It does cut off things like Burning Abyss, which I would very much consider an XYZ era deck, as well as a bunch of Stellarknight stuff and staples of the era like Castel and Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon. A lot of Utopia stuff came out in New Challengers as well.
