Do You Watch Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites?

https://twitter.com/TAGYoungWorkers/status/1496176149495431172

Today we are feeling extra #ProductionStrong as the news has dropped today: the R&M/Solar Opposites production staff have filed to unionize with The Animation Guild! Production staff - PAs, PCs, and in-betweenness - are what make our shows tick and deserve representation!

Do you watch either show and do you support the workers?

I didn't realize their working conditions were bad enough to where they needed to unionize, I guess that's good

I enjoy both shows. Don't care about the workers. Only want my entertainment.

I don't know anything about their specific grievances or working conditions, but more unionization these days is almost certainly a good thing.

What's good about modern unions? They used to have an important purpose but now they make sure lazy fucks that should be fired don't get fired

I like both shows. Solar Opposites feels a lot more... loose? Experimental? It's mostly silly fun except for the wall society sideplot (which gets much darker than I expected)

Sounds like someone works at Wal-Mart and got brainwashed with anti union propaganda.

Molly wasn't onscreen for very long, but it still hurt. I am really looking forward to where they take it in season three.

They help to improve working conditions for all workers. Though they are admittedly not as strong as they used to be.

Animation has traditionally been a harsh work environment, even in the best of shops. There has been a lot of crunch work over the past couple of years, but I also can not say if there was any specific reason for their unionization. Probably Dan Harmon.

I work at a job I love, definitely not at Walmart. Its non union and we still have lazy bums that should get canned, I definitely don't feel like a union would be helpful here. If a work place is really bad maybe they should unionize but I don't think most places need it and actually treat their employees good.

About the only piece of information you need to know to conclude that unions are beneficial is that large corporations invest hundreds of millions of dollars every year into fighting to keep them down.

That is indeed a case where you don't really need a union, but there are many, many instances where that is not the case. Ideally, employers would be good enough of their own volition to make unions unnecessary, but many are not, especially when you look at larger companies and corporations.

Conditions dont need to be terrible for unionizing to be a good thing. Unions are almost always a good thing for the workers.

shouldn't all employment be default-unionized with people having to opt-out to go solo?

Really makes you wonder, tbh.

Generally no because conditions are actually pretty damn these days, but the studio might've been asking them to give up their first-born children or something.

That varies wildly both by union and where you are on the pecking order. In the case of certain industries, it protects people who don't bring much by the table while locking out younger, more passionate workers. A large part of why America's public education system is a mess is unions. It's why you have teachers in some districts who got caught just sitting reading the newspaper while letting their students do whatever were allowed to keep their jobs despite repeatedly doing crap like that. And it led to practices were teachers who assaulted students were allowed to be shifted among the district where, surprise, they assaulted students again.

I'm surprised they weren't already. I'm in a film Union myself, and the entire operation, top to bottom, is basically unionized. I'll have to read up as to why the staff of these shows weren't.

I think so. If you look at the trades many of the tradesman work for the union and not the company and by and large they all get decent pay and benefits as a result.

While modern unions might be more dicey in their need to exist, the main reason we hit a golden era of the American middle class in the 40s-50's was due to unions. That era was a time when a man could support an entire family including owning a home and a fairly new car all on one salary.

Without unions the average American workers situation would be far worse in the modern world. Shit, a main reason unions have more trouble these days is a lot of the jobs that used to pay very well and were extremely plentiful have moved over seas. Why pay some American $15-20 for that factory job when someone in Bangladesh will do it nearly as good and ask for $1.00 an hour or less.
