it's called normal for a reason

the more interesting part is that GameFAQs users seem to prefer easier difficulties as they get older, going by the way the results have changed over time

I always go straight into the hardest mode.

God of War spit me out in 2 hours.

But there's no glory in normal for me.

Probably because as you get older there's less time to game so people go easy mode to get through them faster.

Start with second hardest mode (sometimes this is Normal, but as the poll included Very Hard I voted Hard), hardest mode for replays. Feel like this maximizes the play value for someone like me who likes challenges

Always normal for me unless it's something like Guitar Hero where the highest difficulty is the true "normal" and everything below it is varying degrees of babby mode.

With current games almost always I'll start it in hard since pretty much every game allows you to turn down the difficulty later if need be but not the other way around. Rather the game be too hard and tone it down to something reasonable than too easy with no way to make it harder.

Usually Normal, but if it's a franchise I'm good at I usually default to Hard.

Normal except for games where increased difficulty is tied to more content or special cases like rhythm games which are more fun the harder they are. Most games feel unbalanced at different difficulties

I'm playing pretty much every JRPG on those difficulties because it saves me massive amounts of time and as Tazzy says anything higher is usually badly balanced

To be honest, the more I'm certain i will like a game, the higher the difficulty I'll consider. If I'm just trying it out/it's probably mediocre or poorly designed, I'll absolutely start on easy. Depends on the genre, too

If it's something I can play multiple times and I love it, yeah, I'll do my second play through on super hard. I figure those are for people who already know the ins and outs of the mechanics

This exactly. And too many games just feel better to play on harder difficulties when implemented correctly. Halo not on Heroic doesn't feel right at all, but I also never would start with Legendary

I play normal because that's the intended gameplah experience. Occasionally hard modes are hard by giving you disadvantages that kinda breaks the game format. I want to see the standard way in a first playthrough.

I don't typically like super challenging Single Player games. There are exceptions (Super Meat Boy is a classic example)

If I am looking for a challenge, I go to Multiplayer games.

I don't enjoy being frustrated so I generally start on normal. And if that's giving me problems I have no qualms with dropping it to easy. People that gatekeep difficulty in games are scum.

It kinda depends on if I'm locked into the difficulty I select or not. I'll try starting on Hard if I can switch to Normal eventually.

But if I'm locked into a whole game I'll pretty much always pick Normal.

I don't find high difficulty runs enjoyable.

I generally go one higher than normal unless the options are like

Easy
Normal
EXTREME

I pick normal because I have no idea how well a game is balanced the first time in, so it's my best guess.

no normal is always the intended difficulty didnt you read the thread

Always the hardest difficulty unless it's something I know is truly ridiculous or relies on mastery from an initial run for a smooth experience, like Give Me God of War or Legendary in Halo.
