those aren't mutually exclusive options... I could have a wired or wireless optical or ball mouse. (I have a wired optical). and wired could be PS/2 or USB. and "wireless" is not "modern"...

Wired is still the best performance wise, especially if you play games on the computer. The only real downside to wired is *someone's* big dumb feet catching the cord and tripping them up while sending the computer (and anything else on the table) crashing to the floor.

(Tripped on both my mouse and keyboard this weekend and hurt several things including my back)

Wireless is fine if your just surfing or doing non critical work stuff that doesn't really require time sensitive clicks (especially the old legacy programs you can get by with just a keyboard) but the susceptibility to interference, the input lag, and the straight up batteries dying constantly, make them impractical for anything but casual use.

With the exception of the trackpad, the rest are just variations on the wired / wireless options.

I will say the trackballs are pretty neat, but they are horrible to keep clean.

Some of these are not mutually exclusive. Also the "optical mouse" shown is a laser mouse, but I have a wired, optical mouse. Never could bring myself to spend over $100 on one of those high speed wireless ones, even though people brag about them.

Wired keyboard and mouse.

I never, ever want the inconvenience of having either device run out of batteries while I'm using them, or having to spend money on now inflating battery prices just to save some desk space for cords.

I use wired devices, and I currently have two computer mice hooked up. I appear to have developed some form of carpel tunnel in 2021, so my family saved up and bought me one of these:

which was extremely kind and generous, but I'm still getting used to it, so I keep both plugged in.

That makes a lot of sense, and I agree. But if I had to use batteries, they'd be rechargeable.

Wired optical mouse. It's a Razer DeathAdder Elite piece of shit. I've had to open it up countless times to remove that one single cat hair fucking up the scroll wheel. Never had this happen with any other mouse I've owned.

Wired optical, specifically a Razer Diamondback. It took some hunting to find an ambidextrous mouse with more than the standard two buttons+scroll wheel (I use my mouse left-handed normally, but switch to right-handed for any WASD game), but this does the job pretty nicely.

Razor Viper but I can't use the full range of buttons due to not having the latest version of windows. Also the DPI switcher is on the bottom, which is lame.

Actually, the wired and wireless are often combined with other types. For example, I use a wired optical mouse that I've had for years. It came with my computer. Sometimes I use wireless optical mice on other people's computers.
