I seriously doubt Musk on this, but having such a cure or treatment for autism would be fantastic. Or schizophrenia for that matter.

Not the best optics, but given there are medical treatments for schizophrenia, it's not the wildly offensive statement people pretend because clearly there's a precedent for treating schizophrenia. The only way it might be offensive if you could argue schizophrenia either couldn't or shouldn't be treated.

The other half of the argument is more ambiguous. I don't know what treatments exist, although I imagine medical professionals are trying something.

One was saying how the gap to getting where we can be effective with this tech is Brobdingnagian, to the point where learning how to create our own wormholes would be easier.

The other, and more important in my mind, is about how people like Musk are gating science and advancement by controlling it with their money, making sure they suck all the oxygen out of the room for media coverage, and making sure they own every step of new technology so that no one else will ever be able to contribute to it (unless they worked for Musk).

Science should be a global effort, especially nowadays, not the province of a few rich egomaniacs.

Autism isn't just the hindering parts though. I would love to have my social anxiety cured. That doesn't define me. It isn't responsible for my entire person.

But like, I have a nephew who still can't speak due to autism, and my brother would love nothing more than to cure it at this point. If such convinience cure exist, then sure, I think it is a good thing for parents with such children.

I think this is largely true.

Autistic people are often depicted as otherwise normal people with some awkward personality quirks. Frequently overlooking all of the developmental delays and disabilities you'd find in the mid and lower sections of the spectrum.

Yeah, I think there's an unstated privilege argument where the fully-functional individuals are pushing this without any regard for individuals with absurdly-severe impacts. I've known plenty of people with loved ones whose children would never be able to function in society on their own due to the disability, including non-verbal patients. They would jump at a treatment like this which the overly-privileged scorn.

Non-verbal sufferers are probably the most vulnerable populations in society -- because they can't complain about mistreatment -- which makes the insistence of some posters in this topic just downright galling. And there's something extremely tone-deaf in the people who keep trying to equate seriously-debilitating conditions with homosexuality, on either side of that ridiculous comparison.

It literally is who I am. And I absolutely back increased support for the lower-functioning. We work with a number of group homes for autism at my job.

I don't even think autism can be cured. That doesn't seem to be a priority outside of bro-science and pop science.
