I can see where hes coming from. If we dont openly call them dwarfs in any other scenario, why in a childrens movie by Disney? I guess technically they dont need to be dwarfs.

Well, if his issue is with inconsistency and hes mad that the lead is Latina while they didnt change the dwarfs, then I disagree with him. He can feel one way about how people like him are represented without attacking another person or thing.

The dwarves could be latina as well we don't know yet

tbf, nothing about the Disney story requires them to be the mythological dwarves, as they are ultimately just a bunch of weird men who live in a cottage.

I'm saying you trying to explain why this is not an issue when someone actually affected by it says it is is the same as you trying to explain why issues of racism or sexism aren't issues to people of color or women. Look how quickly you switched to defending this when it was concerning a minority group that gets less attention (and against whom slurs are still commonly used and acceptable, even on this site)

I get his point, I disagree with his idea. We need to stop acting like a Latina getting this role is just because theyre trying to be progressive. Its worth noting because this is new for the industry. Breaking down walls and allowing anyone to play any role regardless of their race is a good thing that needs to be normalized. (The fact that there will be people questioning a Latina Snow White [as someone itt already did] means we arent quite there yet). But a Latina playing Snow White is not the same as deciding not to cast little people.

Yes, they are. But they are largely figures of ridicule and actual people have had their various quotes and behaviour used to mock and belittle them.

Them being "dwarves" is completely irrelevant to the story ultimately - it's not like Gimli in LotR and other places where they are a fictional race - they just happen to be people to laugh at who are also called dwarves and who now many use to mock actual people.

I understand where he's coming from, but he's wrong.

What I'm legitimately trying to do here is get on a common page. Is Dinklage against this because it is a fictional story featuring dwarves, or is it because he's expecting it to be a comical representations of dwarves that gets short people stereotyped?

Can you answer that?

If the former, then fine, I don't really think we needed another remake of it anyway and I honestly had no intention of watching it. If the latter, then also fine, although I imagine there could easily be an effort to make them out to not be cartoon characters.

My dude I've never even seen slurs directed at little people marked for moderation. Maybe you should stop being so insufferably toxic all the time.

Little people are in a uniquely uncomfortable position representation-wise in this regard because the existing characters can't easily be swapped for the sake of progression / representation the way race can; the 7 Dwarves are either removed (which equals no little person representation), changed into average-sized persons (which equals no little person representation), or left in unaltered (which as that previous tweet alluded to, just reinforces existing stereotypes).

So the only plausible solution is to leave the 'dwarves' as being portrayed by little people, but not address them as such (simply call the movie 'Snow White,' which may already be happened), and don't make any jokes / sight gags at the expense of their stature. This would also involve the removal of things that would reinforce old stereotypes, like the 'Heigh Ho' song. Unfortunately I can't see Disney being fully on-board with it.

Of course I'd prefer to hear Dinklage's proposed solution to the problem, since it wasn't presented in the article (although I'm not personally invested in the issue enough to track down and listen to the entire podcast, maybe he already brought it up). Maybe in this case he would rather have no little people representation rather than potentially-negative representation.

I want a version of Snow White where she's Black.

She's born with silver white hair -- her namesake, obviously -- and grows up to be the most beautiful woman in the kingdom.

X-Men already proved that this look is a good combination.

I guess I fail to see what the outrage is about in this case. Is it merely the use of the term dwarves? (And if it is, I guess just naming the movie simply Snow White and not referring to them by that title would take care of that issue?)

Dinklage only states that it is about 7 of them living together in a cave (which is where they actually work, but I dont think thats his actual point). I actually watched the original movie about 2-3 years ago, and I dont recall the height of the 7 dwarves being a point of ridicule. They were just a group of 7 miners who happened to be short (which seems to pull on the lore that is similar from LotR). If anything, they were a characters who took charge, and the focus was on their individual personalities more than anything.

Im not saying that there is nothing to be outraged about here. But if someone could point me in the right direction, Id appreciate it.

iirc, he almost turned down the role of Tyrion due to how smaller people (idk the best way to phrase this) are depicted in the genre, and even had things in Lord of the Rings he didn't care for when it came to dwarves

I'm going to defer to the opinion of the man dwarf representation would actually impact. Ain't my place to tell him he's wrong, and I don't think he is

There's nothing particular about the original story needing them to be dwarves either. I guess they're dwarves because it's just a really old folk tale.

However, the original story as written is actually titled "Little Snow-white" there's no mention of dwarves in the title. That's something that could have easily been avoided.
