RIP to a legend and pioneer.

Still don't know how I feel about him naming his daughter Sydney. The first time I saw Deathproof and was reading through the opening credits I thought 'Oh damn, Sidney Poitier's in this?'

He worked with Clark Gable, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, Louis Calhern, Glenn Ford, Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Yvonne "Lily Munster" de Carlo, Sammy Davis Jr., Ruby Dee, Ivan Dixon, and so on and so on. The man was a legend, and worked with legends.

"Lilies of the Fields" is still my favorite movie of his because he's at his most down to earth and human. He plays a traveling handyman who helps German nuns build a chapel for an impoverished border town.

I don't think he quite gets the credit that he deserves.

His name should be up there with Hollywood elites such as Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. I think his typecasting hurt him later in his career. By the 1970s, he'd developed something of a reputation for being cast as what White people thought a perfect Black man should be. But that typecasting wasn't his fault. It didn't diminish his acting ability or screen presence in the slightest. His name should be ranked easily among the top ten of Hollywood's golden era.

His buddy comedies he did with Bill Cosby back in the 70s don't get a lot of discussion outside of the black community. "Uptown Saturday Night" and "Let's Do It Again" were heavily referenced by the hip-hop community during the 90s.

Yea, read it awhile ago.

I wonder what movies he would have done if he didn't become a Ambassador.

Or fall for the 1970s exploitation propaganda.

He is considered a big deal along side of Woody Strode.
