It can be difficult to break an addiction and not every smoker/drug addict is like this but many people intend to abuse the system and would return to smoking or drug abuse once you help them. Youre wasting tax money on these people prolonging their life when you could instead give them a huge wake up call to get off the habit before its too late

Forcing people to die isnt the answer and would likely turn them into criminals and murderers because they would have nothing to lose at that point but if youre not going to take the consequences of smoking or drug abuse seriously, why should we take you seriously when you say you dont want to die?

Every single American deserves free healthcare. Worry about the insurance companies and 1%ers who are scamming the system. Not poor people just trying to get by.

I just never knew I was that flexible.

I quit smoking, drinking, and getting high (I wasn't addicted to the booze or weed) the day I was diagnosed with heart disease. If I can do it, anyone can.

you clearly cannot grasp the fact that while its difficult to quit an addiction, many people REFUSE TO QUIT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO ABUSE THE SYSTEM

Drug addiction is a serious thing, but the individuals that aren't even willing to change are helping to bankrupt the rest of us.

Had a 30 year old woman last night who easily looks like she's 60 get admitted for the Nth time. She's so coked out her brain literally no longer works, even when she's off drugs. Sober, she just sits there and grunts. She still has the minimal brain reflex to get high and occasionally does it to the point of having seizures and get admitted like last night

She will never recover, it probably isn't even possible

permanent brain damage

I don't know why my taxes pay for her ICU stay

I can think of countless, countless other examples.

It's also easy to apply slippery slope arguments. I honestly feel the same for people that are 600 pounds, woefully uncontrolled hypertensive patients having strokes....all of them. I don't recall the exact numbers but it was something like 10% of the country uses 80% of all healthcare dollars.

That represents, um, a lot of savings...

obesity is as much a problem, but fat shaming is common enough that I wager that anyone who is obese would want to change themselves more than smokers would. Youll also have trouble fitting it tight spots

Also, you can die from hunger but you cant die because you didnt smoke a cigarette or abuse drugs

I went to rehab 10 years ago. Id say I probably have a better understanding of the system than you do. What system are they abusing? Court ordered rehabilitation? Do you know how difficult it is to find good insurance in active addiction and recovery?

I get what you're saying, but we as a society tend to afford people a certain level of autonomy because that's how humans like to live, and something like this would be akin to micromanaging. Also, those people pay taxes too, and smokers pay additional taxes to smoke

Just as a general FYI you can, in fact, die from not drinking alcohol if you're a full-blown addict. I've seen it happen. Other drugs, not so much.

Those people are typically hopeless anyway and the best thing they can do is probably keep drinking, but there are some rare cases of people with both mental fortitude and social constructs and support in place to stop, although relapses are common. Alcohol addiction and abuse is super powerful.

Which is funny when you think about it, since weed is illegal but essentially harmless but alcohol can kill so easily, either from overdose or addiction.

You arent paying to keep anyone alive. They pay taxes just like everyone else and rehab isnt cheap. Again, I dont think you understand how this works.

This is a bad topic and you should feel bad for making it.

Not sure which "Free Healthcare" is being talked about but a LOT of insurance companies charge more for nicotine users.

In the case of smoking, a big reason might be that the extra taxes on cigarettes pay for their healthcare several times over... this same logic can't really be applied to drug users, though, at least not in places that haven't legalized.

The truth is hard. It's really hard. It's so hard to swallow that most of the country creates their own narrative, effectively why we have two countries now in one country (specifically, the patients that tell me to my face, as they're dying, that covid is a hoax).

Free healthcare is a catch-all term for riling up the dem base, but it's literally impossible. My med director just met with our local congressperson who flatly said no legislation in that regard will even realistically be considered for the next term.

Private insurance essential runs the country via owning congress and senate. If you've been paying any attention, they've been posting record profits during the pandemic (!), decreasing physician pay and increasing premiums.

And it's all gonna get worse. Like most people out of the loop, you're welcome to keep your head in the sand, but I can only speak the truth. This world has little sympathy for people that can't get their shit together, and the resources for them are scarce and are likely to stay that way in the short/near future.
