...I enjoyed on first viewing then less so when I thought about it afterwards.

Maybe I'm a minority in this but I really liked the meta-fictional elements that poke fun at the idea of making a fourth Matrix movie (since it does fit in the theme of not fully comprehending what is real and what isn't) and I thought the movie as a whole was more light-hearted than previous installments. But a lot of the underlying message felt hokey on reflection, even if it was still glazed over with a thick dose of philosophical rumination on the nature of reality. The core tenets it's built on didn't feel as genuinely thought-provoking as what the original trilogy went for.

Still I liked it better than Revolutions (and maybe even Reloaded).

It was pretty bad. Dime store Morpheus and Smith pretty much ruined it for me. Not to mention the whole, Smith comes to the rescue. Why? . . . Who knows. Neo loses a bunch of his powers, and Trinity is suddenly just as powerful as him. Why? . . . Just because? I've never seen so many dramatic plot moves with absolutely no reason or explanation. It had me for the first 20 minutes or so, then it went right down the shitter.

lets be fair here, other than Neo being the one in the first movie, nothing at all makes sense in any of the Matrix movies

if there was any problem at all with this new one, its that the Wachowskis didnt try to make a stand alone story.

They should have tried to ignore Matrix 2 and 3, but instead they made a full sequel to it, as if anyone even cares or remembered how Matrix 3 ended

That's how I feel about most movies that think they're clever. As soon as you start to pick at the threads, they usually unravel pretty quickly.

I find it way rarer to find a movie that is good at first and then gets better upon reflection than it is to find movies that seem okay on first watch and then become more stupid the longer you think about them.

It's part of why there's such a focus on "turn your brain off" throwaway movies these days, and why Internet critics (RedLetterMedia, Screen Rant, CinemaSins, etc) can make video after video picking apart every stupid thing in any given movie until you wind up kind of hating something you originally liked.

I rewatched no country for old men the other day, and felt a bit underwhelmed while watching it. Chigurh kinda came off as a self-righteous incel who went of the deep end and got really good at killing anyone who dare disrespected his godlike aura.

After letting it marinate a bit the movie feels perfect. It gave me a newfound appreciation for cinema

I think the idea is that as long as Neo is free, Smith is also free. If The Analyst has him under his control then Smith will too. Or something. This was poorly explained.

Trinity has Chosen One abilities , at least as far as I can figure, because both Neo and Trinity were used to power the new Matrix. My guess is that she is deeply connected with it. Same with Neo.

though there is also the idea that they have always been linked. Neo isnt much of a chosen one without Trinity. That even in the real world they have a very powerful connection. Or... something.

just another thing poorly explained. Like the foundation is there but then they just dont actually do any proper explanation.

I was most surprised by how bad Keanu's acting was. He's never been great, but he seemed sedated the entire time (and that's only excusable up until he takes the red pill again).

Has he gotten too used to playing edgelords like Johnny Silverhand and John Wick? Or was he just really reluctant to return to this franchise

I'm still just trying to figure out why they had the toilet scene in there. Was it just a self-review?
