Board 8 > Help me to decide which major PS4 game to play first!

My brother got his PS5 so he gave me his PS4 with 28 games, access to his online library which has hundreds more.

Going to make this easy on me to start. But where do I start? I know many of these are going to be a lot to chew through. I'm open to ideas.

Persona 5 is definitely the best game on here but it sucks you can't play Royal. If you don't like RPGs though I'd switch my vote to God of War

Super controversial opinion: Royal sucks. It bloats down a streamlined 100 hour game into a 150 hour monstrosity

I actually do think Horizon is an option, but it might be on the downloads.

I think everything royal adds improves the experience. I do wish they managed to streamline things a little better because it's obvious what is extra content, but I still can't imagine going back and playing the base version over Royal

The biggest thing is an additional 20 hour chapter after the main game, but it is extremely obvious where that is so the game feels complete then just.... keeps going. From an RPG perspective I think this is the worst offender because their isn't any rebalancing so you easily can be pretty much maxed out at that point because you got yourself ready for the final boss of the original game which makes the extra content not a fun game to play any more. That was really my biggest issue.

Additionally it adds in other random scenes and content which range from mildly detracting to fine, but in a 100 hour game where its already a bit too bloated I didn't think that improved the experience.

If you're level 99 by that point you must've done a lot of grinding. Royal also redesigns the dungeons from the base game and changes some mechanics like the guns and making Baton pass available by default instead of needing to be unlocked for everyone individually

I meant from a persona standpoint, though I'm trying to keep it intentionally vague given he hasn't played either game

Royal is good, definitely the one to go with if you have a choice. It is pretty broken, though, with how they changed the Chariot rewards.

The new scenes range from OK to good, mostly good. It's not a P4 Golden situation where every single new scene and character is total trash.

P5 Strikers is remotes to be next month's PS+ game, and that game is excellent. It completely ignores Royal, though.

Second Horizon. That game fucking rules so hard.

There's a ton of great games on there, but I'd honestly recommend Spider-Man. Not because it's the "best" game, but because it's a great game to start with that you can pick up and enjoy immediately.

Persona 5 and Monster Hunter World are INCREDIBLE games that absolutely should be worth playing, but they both have pretty slow beginnings (Monster Hunter also has a pretty rough learning curve if you've never played the series before), and are kind of massive undertakings to finish. They're great games, but I'm not sure if I'd start with them.

Royal elevates Persona 5 a lot IMO. The third semester is some of the best content the Persona team put out since Persona 3 IMO. There's also a lot of little things added throughout the "main" game.

If Royal were an option I might pick it but I think I'll give the nod to Automata without it. (P5 still good by itself though)

Nier Automata is terrific, I'd recommend everyone experience it if they have a remote interest in games with well-told narratives. Outer Worlds, Fallen Order and Middle-Earth are all good. Not played the rest!

Horizon, Spider-Man and GoW were my favourites here

First reply, best reply. I looked for Bloodborne, didn't find it, thought "okay, next is P5 or GoW" and here we are.

Royal is really, really bad for P5. The extra content is absolute garbage that doesn't fit with the tone or message of the rest of the game and feels tacked on.

You're not missing anything except a worse experience by not playing it.

I went in to Royal with very low expectations and assuming all the new stuff would be bad. While it's not perfect I can't agree with playing the original over it. It's definitely a replacement upgrade, not a debatable one like P4 to G and P3P vs FES.

P4G isn't debatable and neither is Royal.

P4G is straight up better in every way and its additional content adds something to the narrative by exploring a portion of the story that was a bit underbaked in the original.

P5R's additional content is completely unconnected to the rest of the story, is super rushed in a way that makes all of the characters act massively OOC, and then on top of that makes the ending worse by losing the emotional impact.

It's just actually awful and I can't understand how anyone would like it.

All the new scenes in P4G are atrocious. They reduce the characters to their base meme archetypes. Marie is the worst Persona character.

So far, what I've gathered from this topic is to not play Persona 5.

My opinion is typically that if there is an upgraded version of a game and there's not enough drawbacks to make that version worse, then the previous version ceases to exist.

There is no original P5 to me just like there is no original DQXI.

Of these choices, Spider-Man. Horizon is also stellar.

Persona 5 (but get Royal) > God of War > Red Dead Redemption 2 > NieR: Automata > Marvel's Spider-Man > Monster Hunter World > Shadow of Mordor > Jedi: Fallen Order > The Outer Worlds
