A Twitch streamer, Fiona Fan, is apologizing after receiving backlash for asking why we don't publicly "shame" obese people.

Fan, known as Fanfan on Twitch, was streaming on December 15 to her 50.4 thousand subscribers. Normally, she discusses her life and current events under the "Just Chatting" category.

On this stream, she suggested sectioning off those who are obese the way we designate a space for smokers.

You can't smoke on planes."

"And when you go to a restaurant or a hotel, they have a little roped off area for a 'smoking area.'"

"Like the 'dedicated smoking area' in airports, right? Like, it's roped off."

"Why don't they fucking have that for obese people?"

"I know they don't have that for heroine users, but why do we not shame people who are morbidly obese?"

"It's bad for them."

As comments began calling her out in real time, she later tried to clarify what she was saying.

It didn't make things any better.

"The whole thing that I was saying was that we should not be glorifying people who are morbidly obese, which makes sense, doesn't it?"

"We should not be seeing someone who has health problems because they ate themselves until obesity and call them brave."

"I stand by it."

On a stream the following day, she continued to defend her statements.

Sucks she's getting harassed

Some people get too offended by comments about fat people.

This isn't one of those cases. Jesus christ, literally saying to seperate fat people from the rest of society? What the actual fuck?

She's using stuff only said by very few people to argue to people who are most likely not those people.

Mmm, I'd definitely argue there are more than a few who embrace near or borderline obesity.

The US is among the top 15 most obese countries and our culture does embrace it directly and indirectly.

The general issue with fatshaming is that it's one of the few social pressures that just doesn't work and ends up having the opposite intended affect. Fatshaming a dude could likely lead to him getting depressed and doubling down on his eating habits.

It's a shame the government doesn't actually care about the obesity problem because the least they could do is ban high fructose corn syrup or something.

There is no significant caloric difference between HFCS and cane sugar.

It's addictive and in damn near everything due to being considerably cheaper to produce.

Of course it would also destroy the corn industry. It would be better to just regulate the amount of added sugars any given product could have.

Dude, something has to give. We have an obesity crisis on top of a gazillion other epidemics affecting the US.

1. Lack of physical activity. Most Americans drive everywhere and walk only the minimum amount necessary and then many go on to become couch potatoes in their spare time
2. Long working hours & long commute times leave many with little time to cook. So many turn to fast food or prepackaged unhealthy shit they can microwave.
3. Poor mental health causes people to eat as a coping mechanism.
4. Americans just straight up eat too much fucking meat. Especially beef. Especially fatty beef like Ribeyes. Also stuff like pork sausage. We need to chill with the meat and eat more veggies.

I'd imagine targeting the HFCS content here would lead to some impact.

And they all call it brave? Cause I mostly see people struggling to fight off temptation of America shoving convenience in their face over health. Foods an addiction. And I might not know being heavy. But, I know addiction. Most them don't see being big as brave. The one's who promote that would obviously be louder tho. Literally leading people down an unhealthy path to profit off them and then shaming them for falling into the trap set up.

We are among the top 15 most obese countries for a reason. It's not just food addiction, it's our culture as well. Our culture finds every excuse in the world to point fingers somewhere, and our culture is definitely of the "super size me" variety.
