Used to think they were a scam but you can get 1%-5% cash back per year which averages out to about $250/year per every $10k spent. That is actually a solid discount that can go towards paying for a vacation. All for spending your money how you normally would.

Credit cards are bullshit but not utilizing them means you're leaving money on the table. Even worse, you're paying for other people's rewards through regular cash transactions regardless.

But you should utilize them. The problem comes when you have an awful bank. If you have a competent bank and can manage all your cards through them, all you are doing is transferring balances every month, very manageable stuff. Then at the end of the year you can redeem your points. I mean, it is a no brainer here to use them but you have to use them on your normal every day purchases and not to floss on people. If you spend $10k/year on stuff it can pay for your phone bill every month. With those savings you can invest it into a mutual fund and end up with 5%-15% more at the end of the year.

Like someone said here, get one and do not change your spending habits. Basically free money.

I am going to get the chase freedom card after we get our mortgage figured out. Just going to put all my monthly expenses on it and pay off my bills to 0 at the end of the month and rake in the rewards.

i almost exclusively purchase things with a CC and have done so for ~20 years and i, too, don't spend money i don't have. i just watch my balance and know how much i have coming in the next paycheck (salaried employee). i've never paid a cent in interest fees.

in addition to rewards (ie cash back) you get added consumer protection when buying with a CC. it's much easier to reverse a charge you haven't paid for yet than it is to get money put back into your back account (ie spending with debit / check). you also get a whole bunch of consumer protections with credit cards you never see if you use debit.

I regret getting the Alaska airlines card. I dont even travel that much,. but the kicker is I get charged once year like $70 or something regardless.

Definitely shop for the best Cashback or mileage, and look for cards you don't have to pay an annual fee for.

Do a product change on the card into a no annual fee one. Most banks let you do that. Its not hard.

If you are a student, try the Discover student card. It's basically the same as the non-student card (which is itself a decently good one) and they seem to accept everyone pretty much. Other explicitly student cards would have high odds too.

Get one of your parents to take one out in your name so you can start building your credit. Next option is to get a capital one secured credit card, if you get this card NEVER get rid of it. I got rid of mine cuz it was only $200 credit line but did not realize it was my longest line of credit, dropped my credit score a good chunk(did not help that paypal dropped me around the same time too for not using their credit enough) so ya paypal credit is another option, i think they offer a card and also are not that picky with who they give credit to. In 2-3 years you should qualify for a good credit card like the chase freedom card which gives 1%-5% cash back on every purchase. Thats why i had mentioned to get a solid bank, yes chase bank costs money, but it is totally worth it at only $5 a month what you get from them is quality.

Start by building credit with whatever card your bank issues, it'll probably have a low limit and shitty rewards but it's necessary to start out

That is actually not very cool of them to do. If you have the income to actually pay off the debt they are tempting you with it is understandable but for folks like me who make $15k a year, you should not give me enough credit that i can make mistakes on it. For me $1000-$1500 limit is good cuz i typically spend around $300-$500 per month on stuff.

Capital One has treated me well. They gave me an excellent sign-up bonuses: I got a $500 bonus once I had spent $2,000 and didnt have to worry about interest for a year plus. I only had to carry a balance recently due to a surprise bill, but the interest on the thing isnt even bad, for a credit card, so it only hurt a little. Theyre very transparent about everything too.

Meanwhile, I get 1.5% cash back and little statement credits for certain online shopping sites. Its probably saved me a nice chunk of change.

No, the higher credit limit is great because it raises the cap on your credit utilization which is great since you don't what to go above 30%. Which at $1500 is only perhaps a car repair or some over emergency expanse away.

That and if your spending habits stay the same.... it doesn't really matter how much they raise it.

Credit cards used to suck when you couldn't access a current statement within seconds. You had to keep your own running tally before then if you were going to use it regularly. You also had to mail in a check like a week before it was due to avoid late fees. On top of that, you had to note that you had an uncashed check in the mix to avoid bank fees if you ran your bank account low. It was a lot of book keeping work.

Now they're so easy to use that you're only paying interest in an actual emergency situation or negligence. It's so much better now.

Unless you have no annual fee and properly pay it off so you don't pay any interest. And the annual fees I have seen on the cards I get offered are much less than the rewards that I get auto-redeemed as credit back on my card throughout the year.

The amount of points/rewards I have on my account is enough to cover the annual fee of my card for the next 10 years.

I could literally cash it out and put it into a nice big pink piggy bank and debit the annual fee from there until my kid starts middle school. All the while, I'll still use the card and will accrue more points/rewards.

You don't know what you're talking about.
