They don't want to go the wow route and have a hundred empty servers, because opening new servers rarely worked for wow players don't want to take a risk on a new untested server they want to stick with an established server.

Atari ended because they manufactured too many copies and didn't sell them, not because they sold too many.

I'm sure they know only a certain percentage of those sales will remain as long term customers and so it doesn't make sense to dramatically scale up their server infrastructure.

And as an added bonus, this creates a certain degree of artificial demand that will keep sales high once they do resume.

Yeah it's pretty wild. And if you haven't been playing, the queues have been absolutely insane. Talking hours and hours to get in. And the queues has been riddled with errors. But they're releasing a patch next week to adress the issues. Also everyone got 3 weeks free play time.

the 2002 error is caused by them having weird ass programming

theres a certain number of people that can tax the queue servers at the same time and every 15 minutes it recalculates this, and if its already full because of new people slapping the server, people who have been in the queue can get kicked out with the same 2002 error

people currently in queue should get absolute priority, i don't think anyone would argue with that statement. but EW in particular has stressed the servers so hard with the increased player count that it's finally becoming a big problem

Wow, maybe this is the game I should've gotten into instead of Genshin. How newbie friendly is this game anyway? I've noticed that once an MMO gets a bunch of expansions, it becomes harder for newbies to understand everything because the expansions added too many mechanics and stuff.

The game actually does a fairly decent job of teaching you and holding your hand. At first the global cool down feels slow, it's about 2.5 seconds. But as you level up you get more and more skills and spells unlocked, including oGCDs. So by level cap you're weaving abilities together very quickly while also doing fight mechanics. And there's also several different levels of raiding, with different rewards. And if that's not your thing, there's tons of other stuff to do. Like the gathering and crafting systems are very in depth. Or you can get into housing which is like a game unto itself, or you can level up a Bard then compose actual music on actual instruments, that other players can listen to and even join in. And there is a main story quest, and it's very very worth following from beginning to end, and it carries through all of the expansions and patch content, so at this point the main story is very lengthy. And if that's not your thing you can buy level and story skips to just jump into the latest expansion. But I really do think the story is worth experiencing. New players are absolutely encouraged to play at their own pace. The director has even said "if you find yourself bored with our game, that's okay. play something else, and we'll be here if you ever want to come back." he totally encourages players to take breaks and play other games if they want to, because he understands his game isn't for everyone.

FF14 is a super weird game. Every mmorpg I've ever played people have been elitist dicks, except one. No one has ever been a jerk to me in FF14, don't get me wrong I'm sure they exist but people have always been patient and willing to explain things to me when I play.

Yeah there's kind of a stigma against giving advice at the moment cus it's not really clear if that constitutes harassment under the new guidelines.

I remember WoW had a fair bit of that. You'd get players just doing absolutely ridiculous things and resisting any sort of corrections or complaints about their performance under the pretense that "it's my $15/month and I'll play how I want!". It was kind of a problem.

It is basically a "problem" in every game with established meta. But I think that's the way it should be. I don't like when developers come in and say actually yes it's against TOS to play a certain way. You have to let a community self-regulate or things just get too "state-sanctioned-fun" for my liking.

some manners of play are actively griefing, though, like having 5 people queue for msq roulette and having 4 of them openly and belligerently afk while threatening to kick everyone else

since ff14 is a themepark MMO, there IS no community-at-large to be held accountable to. there's almost entirely roulettes and party finder with people you'll probably never see again or with relatively small groups of friends. it's not like ffxi where you require the approval of others to even progress in any party setting or eve online where you can get mudered out of nowhere just because people dislike you and want to hunt you down

Yeah, as bothersome as it is to have a dungeon run completely fall through because all of your DPS thought they should spread their points evenly across the tree and use every single one of their abilities in sequence instead of following any remotely logical rotation, officially punishing players for playing poorly (beyond the informal punishment of failure) is just not a great way to do things. Punish actual griefing, sure, but letting player bases self-regulate is good.

I mean your comment reminds me of LOL where they don't let you queue for a role, last I played anyways, and yet would ban you for not following the meta of carry/support bottom, mid, jungle, bruiser top. It was unacceptable and why I quit playing the game because their meta sucked, and that was "community self-regulation" since they let players vote on who deserves a ban.

I mean after the Cata fiasco Blizzard stepped away, generally, from making content too hard for random groups because I recall at the beginning of Cata if you had a ret pally or shadow priest in your party for specific heroics you might as well just drop group because you weren't getting it done.

I guess I really just don't understand what point you're really trying to convey. I keep coming up with games that revolve around queuing in my mind and your comment seems like it can only really apply with a game that involves no random match made content.

Maybe that's the reason the new PSO2NGS expansion was a worrying flop? Everybody is playing or waiting to play FFXIV.

I haven't seen anyone really talking about it but <10% of the 60K from Steam charts came back.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I got bored and drifted away from PSO2 shortly before the NA release of episode 5, and that's why I haven't dipped my toes into NGS. I'm vaguely interested, but it's not a high priority for me.
