Well, from a game development perspective I suppose I can tolerate that they need to make cuts to save space on the cartridge or whatever, but personally (as a casual player) there are some classic moves that I wish they didn't cut. Especially weaker but longstanding moves useable by Pokmon in their early levels (Bubble, Magnitude, Ominous Wind, Ice Ball) and Bug moves since I feel like they are so few of them already (Steamroller, Signal Beam, Tail Glow, Silver Wind, Heal Order).

Removal 'signature' moves or moves that are strongly associated with certain Pokmon also potentially makes them feel less unique.

What do you think? Any moves you want back?

I think I remember seeing a post somewhere that if Hidden Power was in Sword and Shield that it'd be a balance nightmare because any pokemon could have access to any Dynamax move. Not sure how bad that'd be.

I'm going to say one of those moves... I'm glad it's gone. Karate Chop fucking ended ended the Nuzlocke run I was playing. It only failed to crit once, and literally ripped my entire team to shreds. I didn't even mean to type ended twice there, but that's how fucking hard it was hitting me. Even pogeys that resisted Fighting type only lasted two(ish) hits. Potions essentially read as "throw this away to see the opponent crit an additional time."

Was this HGSS

I swear the critical rate for enemies in that game is like 50% before any bonuses

Some moves that were added in Sword and Shield are already unusable in BDSP, the whole thing is stupid. I can cope with never having every pokemon in one game again, but adding and subtracting moves from each game is too annoying to deal with.

It looks like they're cutting a lot of early/midgame moves. Like, once you have Earthquake you don't care about Magnitude, once you have Bonemerang/Bone Rush you can ignore Bone Club... but there's generally a lot of gameplay in between. It's always kind of annoying when a Pokmon doesn't have access to STAB. I suppose, now that TMs are reusable (except for the D/P remakes?) they may be expecting those to pick up the slack.

On the flip side, Razor Wind has been useless since day one and I can't say I'm sorry to see it go.

Yeah, they only gave it to Unown in BDSP, so I think Dynamax had nothing to do with it and it was a balancing thing.

I don't know why they would, since Vespiquen was in Sword and Shield and they still cut it.

I don't get why Heal Order got cut but Defend Order and Attack Order stuck around. All three are Vespiquen unique, and it's not like Heal Order is any less distinct than Defend Order (Vespiquen gets Roost but that at least has another property to it, Defend Order would be entirely redundant if Vespiquen just learned Cosmic Power instead). Attack Order sticking around at least makes sense.

Once they add Pokmon Home support in BDSP you could move something that already knows it into the game, right?

I do dislike getting rid of moves like Magnitude. It feels like there are so few Ground-type moves available during the level-up process. It's just Mudslap (which sucks), Bulldoze (which isn't on everything), Dig (again, not on everything), and Earthquake at high levels.

I have no idea how Submission survived the purge, as it's one of the worst moves in the game in my opinion. It has 80 power, which isn't bad at first glance, but there are stronger moves that are more accessible, like Close Combat. No, what really makes Submission suck is its 80% accuracy combined with recoil damage. The move would need to be at least twice as strong as it is to justify those drawbacks. On top of that, it has low distribution so you'll hardly ever see it used anyway.

Yeah I watched a video recently about gen 1 fighting types and I didn't realize just how bad Submission was until then

Got to love gen 1 fighting types being completely awful with only one being able to kind of sort of pretend it's a (bad) niche pick despite the top three Pokemon that are on 99.9% of teams all being normal types.

Yeah, I was surprised by its cut as well. It's just such a solid move that rewards players who can predict switch-ins.

No idea. I mean, they didn't cut Swift, Magical Leaf, or Aerial Ace, so it's clear that "this is a 60 power move that always hits" isn't disqualifying.
