Like, dude, you live in America. You're American. If your parents are from somewhere else that's fine, but you don't see me calling myself Syrian because my dad's ancestors emigrated from Syria to what is now Pakistan many many years ago

Yes, how silly of people for embracing their ethnic heritage. I say if your family lives in a country for more than 25 years, they should sever all ties to their ethnicity and fully embrace their new cultural heritage. The example he posted is pretty bad for the point hes trying to make. Literally two generations removed, which is a lot more understandable why it would still be heavily embraced compared to someone that said 5-6X great grandparent

Also the whole thing about America itself is a conglomeration of multiple cultures, so people still openly embracing their heritage is a good thing, especially in the face of dumbfucks that are trying to actively stop that.

just a pretty shit topic tbh

It's just a cultural difference about how identity is perceived between a giant continent-spanning country where everyone is a the same and feels a need to express individuality, and people from a tiny continent full tiny, different nations that easily set themselves apart from each other.

But they are American already, and embracing your national/ethnic heritage while being American, especially someone so recently removed, is something that is uniquely American. What they get mad about is when they dont fully assimilate and blend in with what they consider to be American norms.

In other countries, when people trace their roots back, their roots don't get cut off so quickly. Whereas in the US, most people's roots get cut off after just a few generations. So the "American" national identity isn't as stable. I feel like this is something that a lot of people from other countries often don't really grasp.

With Italian Americans specifically, it seems pretty common for families to have very strong ties to their heritage. At least in NYC. I was dating a girl earlier this year whose whole family was born in the US, but they were still extremely Italian. And extremely Catholic, but that's another issue...
