Do you think teens have a right to consent on their own if they want the vaccine or not?

Outraged Heifer, Maribel Duarte from California claims her 13 y/o son's school BRIBED him with PIZZA to get a COVID vaccine and warned him not to tell anyone about it!!

She said he returned home from the Barack Obama Global Prep Academy in Los Angeles with a vaccine card after he accepted the Pfizer COVID vaccine in exchange for pizza

She said "I should have been involved. The lady gave him the shot and signed the paper and told my son Please don't say anything. I don't want to get in trouble"

The card showed the unidentified boy had 2 doses of his Pfizer vaccine, once on October 29 and November 18 as it's unclear when he told hs mother about what had happened after the first and second shot

Duarte herself is vaccinated but said she didn't want her son to get it cause he was asthmatic and suffers allergies which she fears put him at greater risk for rare side effects

The school is part of the LA Unified School District which is mandating all students 12 or older to be vaccinated by January 10

In almost all California districts, students 18 or under can only get vaccinated with parental consent although SF allows children aged 12 and up to decide for themselves

Students who aren't vaccinated by the deadline or don't have legal exemption will be forced into virtual learning

A spokesperson said they couldn't confirm the incident but that students are being offered incentives to get the vaccine as a sign out front says all students at this district must be vaccinated by Jan.10, 2022

Jennifer Kennedy, a lawyer is following 2 cases making their way through court against LAUSD seeking to end the mandate who says the district has no legal authority to enforce a mandate who said "You couldn't do it if you were a podunk school district and you can't do it if you're LAUSD. You don't have legal authority".

This has caused a firestorm of controversy with opponents pointing ot the fact there is little evidence to suggest vaccinating children is necessary

The pandemic has killed 780,000 Amerians so far in almost 2 years

Do you think teens have a right to consent if they want a vaccine or not?

It feels like a violation of something. afaik, those things usually require parental consent.

If the mother continued to block the vaccine the kid would have been forced into virtual learning. I think most kids would prefer to go to school, under most circumstances.

You don't see most Mother's getting up in arms when their kid has to have certain vaccines shortly after birth.

If all it took was some pizza to sway him, it sounds like he didn't have a particularly strong stance on the issue to begin with.

As far as the "need" to vaccinate.. even if the young are unlikely to die from it, they could still suffer long term complications (including in their lungs, which should concern someone w/ asthma...), and they can still spread it to other people. Vaccines are to protect the entire community, not just yourself.

I mean, I'd prefer the virtual learning. Any significantly introverted person would.
Ironically, it's usually the parents clamoring to get the kids back into school b/c the school functions as free day care for them and they want the kids out of the house. But in this case, it's the reverse...

Most people seem to be focusing on only the death thing, and saying well if I don't die from it who cares.

It's basically like saying if I shoot you in the leg with a gun it's irrelevant because obviously you will live, assuming you get treatment in a reasonable time frame.

Pretty sure the WHO and the like are suggesting to vaccinate certain age-ranges and situations now.

For people who have trouble (or are unable) to see beyond themselves, yes, it's true to say that vaccinating children and younger healthy adults isn't absolutely necessary for their own health: the risk is pretty low for them.

However, COVID has been competing with heart disease and cancer as a leading cause of death in the US this year. It was #1 early on, dropped to #7 in July, and I think it's back up to #3-4 now. Hospitals continue to be at maximum capacity in some regions. It's largely preventable.

Unvaccinated people are far more likely to spread the disease, possibly to those who are at higher risk. People who don't get vaccinated are either misinformed or selfish assholes who think it's a fun political statement. Vaccinations should be mandatory (as were many other - very similar - vaccines for anyone who went through the US school system) for those without a legitimate medical excuse...which is very few people. If nothing else insurance companies should NOT be covering the costs of hospitalization for those who refuse the vaccine and then end up on a ventilator for a week. I had some sympathy for vaccine reluctance before their full approval. I have no sympathy now.

I would find nothing more amusing than a national law that allows people to sue people who knowingly attending large gatherings while knowingly having COVID for $10,000 i.e. the Texas abortion law.
