I think Y'shtola has had the least character development for sure.

I also think that's okay. She's the rock of the group. She didn't come in with any obvious issues she needed to deal with; she's always been the most level-headed and fulfilled. I have no problem with static characters if the characters are endearing already and help support the ones in the group that do have obvious room to grow.

I don't think she does much supporting, though? In terms of personal relationships she doesn't seem particularly close to anyone. Best thing I can come up with is her and Uriangier with the scene in ShB that's essentially Uriangier getting her to keep quiet about the WoL becoming a sin eater, and their Ultima Thule "death" scene (which does give Uriangier the chance to grow by supporting her). But that's still less developed than like...Uriangier/Thancred who for the comparatively smaller amount of time they've had on-screen very quickly developed a weirdly close relationship (???)

None of this is to say she's bad however, she just very consistently feels the most detached.

There are quite a few Thancred/Yshtola scenes throughout the game to the point where it seems some people were certain they were setting a relationship up.

I recall some of that back in Heavensward but you gotta understand that was 6 years ago for me

And Yshtola was basically in time-out for a year and a half during Stormblood

So maybe my recency bias is showing here

And P2S down in PF as well. Pretty fun fight, think that'll be more enjoyable in reclears than E10S was.

I kind of agree that Y'shtola isn't super compelling, but it's nice to have a "normal"/chill personality in the cast. Just a normal friend, one that's not falling over themselves to impress you or whatever. one that's not overly dramatic

I would describe her arc as one of slight detachment from humanity. Her vacation in the lifestream transitioned her from WhM to BlM and alienized her sight.

She has her shit together, she had her guy on the first, it's all good

There have been zero plot clues about where we're going next in MSQ. Yoshi said there's going to be a live letter next month detailing the roadmap for 6.X that might say something, but most likely we'll find out more at the 6.1 preview live letters in March.

We likely will not even be getting new trials until 6.2

I imagine the Final Day EX will be 6.1 tho.

Oh yeah Final Day EX is 100% the trial for 6.1, they've done the EX version of the final story trial in the first patch since 2.1.

We typically get MSQ trials only at X.3. I don't remember when sidequest series trials start -- I think it's X.2?

True, but also the X.3 trial is typically the end of the wrap-up of the X.0 storyline. This time around just about every loose story thread has already been tied up - we're breaking new ground, story-wise. I wouldn't be surprised if there's an MSQ trial in 6.3, but I also wouldn't be surprised if there isn't, or if they save the MSQ trial for 6.5.

So, I'm 4/5 on role quests right now, and I'm still not sure how I feel about them aside from Tank being terrible.

Gridania is beyond hope, saddled with an ineffective and outright stupid leader incapable of understanding how her incompetence hurts her people, and anyone around her gives her headpats and tells her there's nothing she could have done when there were, in fact, MANY things she could have done. The elementals are set to "murder all people" by default since the Sixth Calamity, and nobody has the balls to admit that the forest ghosts just hold them hostage and demand gratitude for it. No blame is given to the entity that started the entire mess. Kan-E prays for her BFF's "soul to rest" despite his soul getting obliterated when he became a Blasphemy -- and I could forgive her ignorance if she weren't supposed to be a spiritual leader. She never learns anything. She won't improve anything. She'll just keep being Little Miss Fuckup.

Burn the place to the ground, and the Elementals with it. We'll all be better off.

Sounds like a WHM in the making.

8. Labyrinthos Part 2

Let's be honest. Labyrinthos suuuuuucks, one handsome bunboy aside. I'm one of the few who liked the music override in Kholusia Part 2, but it's because we were going about building the massive robot with everyone united behind us. In Labyrinthos we're just... waiting around while our allies go get us everything we need. I do appreciate us having such capable allies now, but it did not warrant a music override, and all the quests felt like obnoxious busywork -- especially that horrible "find the scientists who need to talk to rabbits" quest. It had its moments, most notably Urianger with Moenbryda's parents, but honestly, this zone felt so weird to have as an MMO zone to begin with. The most irritating part of this is, aside from trimming a bunch of fat and tightening pacing, I don't know what I'd do to fix it without fucking up the narrative.

7. Labyrinthos Part 1

Yes, it still sucks. Things are happening here, but except for stuff involving a certain gleaner scholar, it was a snoozefest. The entire thing only existed as a way to get us an Elpis flower and have us get caught by Fourchenault. I'm okay with that if it had taken 50% less time and didn't waste an entire zone of an expansion.

6. Moooooon

It's hard to do much with a barren landscape aesthetically, but the first bit of this went pretty well. The moon was, in fact, haunted, and jumping into the Zodiark fight at level 83 blew my mind. Then... the loporrits. Dear god, the loporrits. I like them in a vacuum - I even adore them - but the Bestways Burrows portion of the MSQ was the most painful by the end of it. In an MSQ plagued with bad pacing, this was the worst. It also highlights another aspect of "this doesn't make sense as an MMO zone"; the fact that there are tons of enemies crawling around facilities meant to bring us shelter, with no real acknowledgment from our guardians that things are super off, jarred the hell out of me. At least we got to see Urianger rocking that stupid outfit.

5. Thavnair 1

Part 1 of Thavnair wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't particularly bad, either. It was clearly just setup, but I like it the way I like Amh Araeng's part 1; it had characters I got a great first impression from (Matsya, Nidhana), a culture I found enjoyable to learn about, some early moments of levity in an otherwise super tense story, and Best Dragon Vrtra. Actually, the more I type this, the more I realize I really did enjoy Thavnair 1, though it still remains in this placement since the gap gets huge between the bottom and top half. I will say Nidhana getting captured wasn't nearly as impactful as Tesleen's fate, though that's obviously by design.

Second half of the rankings when I have time next.
