My Nintendo Switch loses battery fairly quickly when compared to my son who is somehow walking around STILL playing Fortnite from this morning.

The Switch came out in 2017, if you bought it after it first came out yours is almost 4-1/2 years old. Of course your battery is going to be crap compared to a new one. Also if your son's is an OLED model the screen will use a lot less power than the original design.

You can try to replace the battery yourself. iFixit rated the difficulty as moderate and it requires some special tools including Y 00 and JIS 000 screwdrivers.

Newer models did begin advertising something like 2x the battery life of the previous models at some point, yeah.
