I'm sad that nobody cares about this anymore.

I find out about a daemon named Lancelot Capalus who overtook Vortigern at the inn in Cadnix. I can't get to Hexen Isle to kill the Code Red there - it doesn't appear on that list. Theodora doesn't appear as a sidequest. I would take a guess that those are post-game. I kill Count Capalus and there's nothing to mention, not that anyone's reading it anyway.

Kamoana has a fever so I gotta get the medicine. Laphicet senses a disturbance in the force, maybe Eleanor becoming a daemon, and Rokurou calls Eleanor a "cheap project" thanks to the typos. I wonder who got fired for THAT one. The game won't let me warp to Haria so I have to go there by boat... and in Hellawes I hear some thugs talking about a bunch of praetors being wiped out by Theodora at the Gaiburk Ice Field, save for the one who survived to give the message that they'd wounded her. I don't see ANYTHING on the map at the Gaiburk Ice Field so I know where the game wants me to go. I even run into Morgrim at the harbor in Yseult and she says the earthpulse at the Shrine of Tranquility by Aball opened up, and yet I can't go there, either. Apparently, Kamoana is the game's number-one priority right now. How sick is she?

On my way out of Yseult, a Bloodwing tells me to avoid Haria because a giant troll has started smashing buildings with its club, and that he's done this to several other villages that the game never let exist. Apparently, he's an old friend of Eleanor's, so of course I go check it out. The game won't let me warp because it wants me to see a scene they stupidly placed halfway there, amongst a sea of weak monsters, where Eleanor says that a group of trolls attacked her village to obtain the jewel for which she was named, a family heirloom, and her mother tried to use it as a diversion so she could escape and... failed. Eleanor wants revenge. This is just reinforcing existing backstory, and at this point it means nothing to me. Why give me the details NOW when you gave me the gist of it a long time ago? There's no emotion in it now.

I warp to Haria because I can now, and it's the same ol' ghost town. Velvet magically generates a small bag that's apparently what we're looking for. BUDGET! Of course at this point, the daemon attacks. Eleanor sees the jewel around its neck, loses control of her emotions, and charges the thing. It's a tough foe but I take it down, with the fight finishing on a seemingly scripted Spiral Hail from Eleanor, because right after it ends it shows the troll being blown back with Eleanor's spear pointed at it. I was HOPING that would be how the fight ended and it did.

Eleanor admits afterward that 1) she lost control of her emotions, 2) this had indeed been driving her, and 3) because of 1 and 2, she can understand how Kamoana would feel if she ever learned the truth that Eleanor was the monster who murdered her mother. The hypocrisy is eating her up inside, which shows you something about her: She's a good person who got preoccupied with something horrible, and became a cold-blooded murderer because of that preoccupation... no different than a daemon. Her mother giving herself up... Mahina feeding herself to Kamoana... it's no different. Malevolence starts to gather around Eleanor. The party's reactions say a lot. Laphicet yells at her to wake the fuck up and realize that she's not a horrible monster (because she, y'know, realized her hypocrisy). Eizen starts panicking because that's NOT gonna be good. Rokurou acts calm and asks her to spill it all out, and Magilou lays into him because Laphicet would turn into a dragon and Eleanor wouldn't know what to do with herself. Velvet brilliantly just starts reading the instructions from Mahina as a distraction, and the note is so thorough that it's obvious that Kamoana was frequently fed by someone other than her mother. It also mentions the placebo effect. But Eleanor realizes that Kamoana is no different than her: A kindhearted girl who's lonely, and just needs the love. And the mother's resolve kicks in. Methinks Eleanor is gonna be a good mom herself someday, who's going to lie, cheat, and steal for her kid's sake.

Unfortunately, the jewel didn't survive the fight, but Eleanor doesn't mind. Her mother's sacrifice and teachings of kindness and love are what are most important to her. And now it's her turn to impart those on Kamoana.... well... about that... Dyle's stirring up a panic because Kamoana therionized and Medissa lured her into the volcano. We gotta give chase. Once we get inside the cave, there aren't any monsters, and I presume it's because Kamoana ate them all. We quickly find them and Eleanor defuses the situation... and it really is Mahina's medicine. She did lie that it wasn't bitter anymore, but that was to calm her down. It worked - Kamoana's fighting off her fever and Eleanor starts realizing... maybe she was meant to have kids when she's older. Not yet, though. She needs to find a man first who isn't drooling over her because "Physically Escalating with Cuties" said he should.

SPEAKING OF, I get another scene at the inn where Bienfu talks to Grim about Magilou being crazy and not having things figured out before we go kill Innominat, and he thinks her introducing him to a cute girl would compensate, as if she wasn't one. He even says he wants "just one brief glimpse at who she is underneath." Because Bienfu, I believe bazongas. Say that five times fast. Grim tells him like it is: He lacks self-confidence and self-recognition. He's thick-skinned and tenacious because he's been dealing with Magilou for years, and yet she still takes him everywhere and still relies on him for her powers. She trusts him, even if she doesn't express that with gratitude, and that's why she repossessed him from Eleanor back when Eleanor was working for the bad guys. Grim also calls herself "Normin Theruhpist" and I don't know if that's her name or if she's making a joke. Bienfu thinks it was a joke, LOL.

Zaveid does not seem to understand the concept of a "mercy kill" - and the same goes for Laphicet. Like when your 17 y/o dog is immobile all the damn time and clearly in a lot of pain, it's much more sadistic to keep the pet alive when it's no longer contributing to happy memories. As hard as it is, putting the pet down is the best decision for the pet, to release it from pain. (The same can be true of humans, of course.) This is why Eizen says he's "saving" Theodora. She's a dragon. She's not turning back to who she was. And she's being hunted by the Abbey, so she's in pain. Zaveid doesn't want to let his beloved go, even though she'll never be who she was again. And thus we end up in a fight. I win it the first try, but BOY was that rough - everyone gets minutes in this fight and Zaveid keeps spamming his Mystic Arte. Yeah, that part didn't go so well. After saving Laphicet from a wild fireball, he uses Siegfried after the fight to scare Theodora into flying off so Eizen can't kill her... and she can probably wreak havoc in Hellawes or something.

Zaveid explains that Theodora had a passion for life like any other, and it was constantly rekindled by children who had the hope to keep moving, even in the face of loss, because they had a lot of life left. And she'd never give up on a child, because they'd squeeze her hands back. Eizen kills the mood by saying he's still gonna kill her, implying that she's the one who's cursed (giving his classic "don't answer a question with another question" response when Zaveid asks about other Reapers). We leave Zaveid with the thought of what it means to be alive. I wish I knew the answer, but alas. Eleanor and Laphicet don't know either, and are both baffled as to why two similar malakhim can't try to understand each other because they're so similar.

That's it for tonight.

I think that this part of the game is kind of lame padding. I love seeing more story with the best girl in the game, sure, but - correct me if I'm wrong - by this point Arthur is the only baddie left, right? And it was somewhat frustrating to me to basically be running errands at the 100h mark.

Yeah, there are too many sidequests that keep popping up here, and the completionist in me wants to do all the big ones. Artorius and Innominat are the only baddies left (Big Bad Melchior is already dead) so there's not much of a need to have this now. You don't follow up your climax with excessive amounts of couriering. It's called a pace-killer. You do not have blatant filler between your climax and the final confrontation. It squanders all the buildup. The poor sidequest structure is one of the only things about Tales games that I dislike. You have things in dumb places at dumb times and have to just magically know where they are, AND many of them conclude right at the end of the game instead of naturally as you progress.

There are only a couple left, including a rematch with Phoenix (I have learned a couple new skills, improved my equipment, and gained a level) and the Loegres Majelu stuffs. But first, I go to Aball to see about Morgrim's tip regarding the earthpulse. I play the fishing on the way - I have enough bait for a good job, but still don't get the big one - and head into the earthpulse. I kill a Code Red and then get a flashback where Melchior formed the pact between Artorius and Seres. This scene makes it blatant that she gave herself up to Velvet so as to not let her abuser obtain the power that was tied to her life force, that being the Sorcerer's Ring. It was to stop armatazation from being realized, because she woke the fuck up from these two monsters indoctrinating her into thinking she was nothing more than a slave. Fuck them.

The second scene is a flashback to even longer before, when Artorius first opened up to Celica about Empyreans and daemons... and she didn't get it. She mistakenly thought Artorius loved the world and its people - or maybe he DID at that point, but to get to the point of brainwashing everyone is not developed from a love of the populace. He has become distorted. The third scene... is juicy. A very young, zombified Laphicet (malak Laphicet) says his assigned name is "Malak Number Two" to his mother, who's... not very happy about that. It's not his name, but she knows he can't remember anything since he wasn't even born as a human. Laphicet doesn't understand her torment from her human memories as Celica, nor that she was happier when she was ignorant. I can agree there: Some things are best not learned or remembered. Seres, who has the comb, then says something that confuses me: She's about to go free someone who can kill Innominat and Artorius. Aka Velvet. So... what the hell was Phi doing for ten years? He wasn't tethered to Trixie until shortly before the jailbreak? (P.S. It's quite jarring how much of a zombie he is compared to the one I've come to know.) We end up at Titania, where Laphicet says he has no memories of his mother. But he says she can rest easy, and that he'll be okay. It's sweet. He's glad to have free will - I mean, who wouldn't be? - but he's not bound by the same haunting memories that his mother was.

I save for the morning outside Titania, and I'll go kill Phoenix later... hopefully. Got a few other things to do.

Agreed. Tales pacing is always so over the place and convoluted. I actually forgot all about that junk until you brought it up, because my memory tries to skip over all that filler.

They're lucky that the gameplay is as good as it is!

Yeah, Tales has always been about the gameplay - it was something no other JRPG series did so well for ages. Star Ocean was the only other one trying, but it had a lot of issues. Abyss is my favorite Tales because it nails the story, too - there are no pacing issues until the endgame, but the sidequests are all over the place but are thankfully less critical to the story as some of the ones I've seen here. They do help with the world-building, which is something Tales is very hit-or-miss with.

Anyway, I challenged Phoenix and got him down to half health, so I figure that equipment management is the key. I do that and lose the next one more decisively because Eleanor swapped out for Rokurou early on and it wouldn't let me change that back. WTF.

Looks like I won't be killing Artorius before my vacation (if I go on it - American Airlines is being awful again, so...)

The third time, I adjust by cooking something different and subbing Magilou for Laphicet, but I lose because the game keeps glitching Velvet's therionization, so I decide everyone's gonna have to be level 70 before I try again. That may mean post-game.

In Loegres, I find out that Majelu ran away because Valta wouldn't let her catch a break even though he says he's been hearing her out. YTA, dude. You're exhausting her. And rumor is she went to the last unexplored dungeon on the map: Zavahl Grotto. Because our Exorcist friend Eleanor demands we rescue her from a dangerous daemon nest, I warp to Stonebury straight away. She just beat me there and was just attacked by a huge daemon witch that I dispatch - it's not an easy fight, mind you, but it's no Phoenix. Magilou and Majelu bond over having bossy teachers who don't understand that they have one mouth and two ears for a reason.

Majelu is distraught about her own abilities as a dancer, and before she can tell us why she wanted to come to this grotto, an injured Valta stumbles in here. Did the man not get himself an escort? Geez, he's as stubborn as his Lulu. And then she says she came here to find herbs to heal his injury. Obvious why: She wanted to free herself from his bossiness. That would either alleviate his anger issues or get him to go back into dancing and feel like he didn't need her. Smart girl. But he doesn't care about that: He thinks that, by coming to a dangerous place unescorted, she could get herself killed and throw away her talent, and all he cares about is for her to gain a title that was once his: Greatest dancer in the world. He knows it's not coming back.

Magilou decides this is the perfect time to troll, and it's hilarious even though her joke doesn't land. Majelu is FIRED UP about winning a popularity contest against a witch that can summon a flock of doves with her bare hands. And now they see each other as rivals. Nothing a dozen eggs couldn't accomplish!

I dive into the dungeon for a bit but quickly get tired since it's been a long day of dealing with airline bullshit, finishing taxes, horror movie watchalongs, exercising, and packing shit (yeah that's a LOT), so I back out and end for the night. Unless American Air's shit costs me my trip (long story), I'll have to wait two weeks before I can come back and finish. I am so, so sorry to keep you guys waiting. I didn't intend for it to be like this, I swear.

I'd just save Phoenix for postgame. Either that or lower the difficulty. He's probably the second hardest fight in the game, which is funny, since there's an easier fight locked behind beating Phoenix.

Yeah, I'm gonna do that.

Also my mom went on a warpath against American Airlines (I'm obviously going to see my parents) so I get to travel! That means the rest of this is gonna have to wait until I return in two weeks. I'll keep this bumped best I can but would appreciate help with that. Can definitely have a dialogue of random thoughts. Never know what's gonna pop in my head.

A few things...

Eleanor: Again, I really like how they developed a character who is the typical "good girl" type and had her working for some very horrible people, do something terrible, realize that she was a hypocrite, and atone for the sin. She realized she wasn't really who she thought she was.

The Abbey:
I enjoyed them as villains for a while because they were presenting themselves as doing something for a greater good, and the populace sided with them. That last part is critical. What they were doing was necessary, at least until they turned everyone into zombies. That was when it became apparent that they were, like the Red Army and bedbugs, among the purest of evils. And then they just became a typical "take over the world" megalomaniac type of antagonist.

The writing really dropped off with the Aifread thing (still makes no sense why the party let Melchior walk yet didn't go non-lethal with the Captain). The scene where Melchior got its comeuppance was awesome, though. Great climax. Everything since... meh. I wish I had been able to get it over with.

I just wanted you guys to know that I haven't forgotten even though I won't be able to play for two more weeks.

Can't get enough of those. Or for Laphicet. Or Velvet. And of course for Magilou.

Thanks for keeping this bumped. I return home Tuesday night and am unlikely to be able to play Wednesday (what, with unpacking, a huge grocery trip, and other "welcome home" things).

Also, I came up with a theory that Laphicet gives himself up to cure Velvet of daemonblight so she doesn't have to live the rest of her life as the Lord of Calamity. I'm pretty sure that at least one of them is gonna die. I'm prepared for an emotional ending because this game is set up for it. I hope it delivers.

Then I fly back tomorrow, and it's probably going to be brutal with a hangover (I only ever drink on rare special occasions). I have a long list of things to do but "Kill Artorius" is on there so I haven't forgotten!

Thanks! No drunken posts this time.

Anyway, not sure what all I had to do before, but here we go...

There;s really no point to this Zamahl Grotto, at least not in this millennium. It may be a carryover from Zestiria, but I don't know. I end up with gobs of Katz Souls, some good pickups, and the satisfaction that I quelled a zombie Bozoblin uprising again (one of the few good parts of Skyward Snore).

That's all for tonight considering how much time I spent managing equipment, as you probably could've guessed.

I may try Phoenix again tomorrow and use an All-Divide. I always forget about those.

The following post contains graphic scenes. Reader discretion advised.

Eleanor opens up with Lost Fon Drive and I have a good feeling... until Eizen swaps out for Laphicet because he's in critical health and I lose Resurrection. I have Life Bottles, yes? I beat the crap out of him through chaining Break Souls and yadda yadda yadda...
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/3/9/AAR0ZFAADEUr.jpg

Well so much for that, because this motherfucker has a "last breath" Mystic Arte that's nothing more than cheating. He fully heals himself and I gotta do it again. I do. Only this time I make sure to try to finish him off with Lethal Pain... and though that succeeds, he hijacks my Mystic Arte to use the cheat code again.

Fuck this little bitch. At least this time he has only half health, but I'm low on Life Bottles. Eleanor falls and I sub Eizen back in when my Life Bottles run out. I lose immediately after that. AFTER 45 FUCKING MINUTES OF THIS FUCKING FIGHT. I may go out and murder a Red-Tailed Hawk since I am so fucking sick of hearing its cry. Like for reals.

That fight is just plain unfair. Here I thought I might've had him. I am gonna need another level or two and maybe even more upgraded equipment (hint: I already have +20 or greater for my four mains).

What I've learned, however:
  • Velvet's Break Soul only turns into her daemon hand if it makes contact with the enemy's plane - in other words, where their model is on the battlefield. It won't work if I don't touch the bastard. I am trying to time this better. I don't think I noticed it before because I haven't fought anything this tiny-yet-agile previously.
  • Velvet's Break Soul ends when she hits 1 HP or when she hits the end of her soul gauge, whichever is first. I knew the latter but now I see why she uses them quicker in others.
  • Magilou does NOT go down, and I notice her ridiculous defenses: 720 DEF and 657 A.DEF. So I move around some equipment to help everyone have better defensive stats, including damage reduction drop skills. That certainly is a priority over having 7 Souls or +3 BG, but having a sixth soul goes a LONG way, especially for Velvet.
  • Magilou also has the least damage output here, and Laphicet coming in kind of helped, so I am going to try switching those two out. I need Eizen and Eleanor in there. And the kid has the Neptune Satchel, so that's gonna help.
  • I forgot to cook something, so did that. One that, after one minute passes, should keep healing HP. Had Rokurou do it to reduce fire damage another 5%. That can be helpful.

I am going to try again tomorrow. I do hope that one goes better than this does. If it does not, well... I will probably just go kill Artorius.

Also, looking at the achievements.... there's nothing with a pic of Rokurou. Did I perhaps miss a sidequest of some variety? Eizen already has one and this fight would have been one for him, so... I wonder. I'll have to look through town maps to see what else I can find. Don't spoil me until I kill Artorius.

Again, will play tomorrow. Sorry that these updates aren't very rich. Probably because I'm not doing any main story stuff and am tying up loose ends...

Yippee ki-yay, motherfucker.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/6/7/AAR0ZFAADEhn.jpg

Not quite sure what happened before since he only used the "last gasp" here ONCE. And I found that, once Eizen swapped out for Magilou, that my damage output was much higher. Magilou is that good.

After the smoke clears, Eizen recognizes that Phoenix has the blessing opposite the Reaper's Curse, which would make these two a pretty lethal partnership. Eizen refuses to give Phoenix orders since that violates his desire to be free, to take one's own path through life's waters. Enslaving a normin would make him a hypocrite. However, he has an informal request for Phoenix to do whatever he is is able to do to protect his sister. I find it odd that they don't refer to her by name tbh. And Eizen mentions a dragon one day attacking her. That smells of Zestiria, and I'm willing to bet said dragon is either Zaveid or Eizen himself. Phoenix requests Eizen write his sister a fully truthful letter, which Eizen produces from his pocket and Phoenix promises delivery. This... happens now, doesn't it?

Eizen says: "Never give up before you try." True words have never been spoken. I don't give up before trying, though... I calculate odds and stuff to determine the best approach to attempt.

Back at the ship (I warped), Eleanor inquires why Bienfu and Grim hid from Phoenix. Grim explains that there are two categories of normin... dog normin and cat normin. Well, that explains a lot. Bienfu says dog types enjoy being around humans, while the cat types have preferred objects and places. Bienfu says he's a cat type, and his powers work through Magilou's guardian weapons (plus she's a witch). Cats like Bienfu and Grim and the really stubborn dogs like Phoenix don't particularly get along, and Grim also, mentions Phoenix's conspiracy theories. LOL.

Looking over the world map for sidequests, I find:
  • In Meirchio, a healthy Kamoana wants to play a treasure game. She hid the key to the chest in Dyle's pocket while he was sleeping, so he has a key and... hasn't noticed. The WHAT? Apparently he even washed his shirt without checking the pockets! Kamoana equally bafflingly thinks Dyle would bite anyone to protect said key, even though he doesn't know what the hell it goes to. This is just stupid, so... yadda yadda yadda BLAH BLAH BLAH TIDAL WAVE yadda yadda yadda... oh hey she's stashing her mom's recipe, an upgrade to the Mabo Curry. That ain't bad!
  • There's shoehorned Magilou backstory here, courtesy of Grim and Bienfu. This confirms what the random NPC in Stonebury said was indeed about Magilou. She was born with greater resonance and could see malakhim from infancy. Her birth family thought her powers were creepy and left her on a street corner. She was picked up by the street performers and exploited. She met Bienfu and formed a pact since he was the only one she could trust. An "accident" happened - one set up by Melchior. Melchior wanted a successor and used its evil powers to save Magilou and kill everyone else. It adopted Magilou and trained her, and she became a legate and felt like she had a home until she failed Melchior's final test, and it just discarded her Russell Hantz style. She stayed with Grim for a bit, but then left, got into a fight with exorcists, and ended up in prison.
  • Grim apologizes to Magilou for blabbing and I expect Magilou to not give a shit. Sure enough: "Magillanica might as well be dead." She refuses to answer if what broke her was Melchior no longer considering her its daughter. Not that anyone would want to be the child of that... that thing. This gets Magilou a Harley Quinn variant of her outfit. YES PLS.
  • In Reneed, a Bloodwing informant informs us that Theodora has been spotted in the Aldina Plains. We are requested to use lethal force. She says that it's because Zaveid has been bullying exorcists into spilling information, and this has put the Abbey on high alert. This disrupts the Bloodwings' moles, and could expose them if the Abbey starts checking into people.
  • In Loegres, there's a complete reversal of the zombies: An old man reminding the younger folk to leave a little room for joy in our lives. This is something that the monstrous Melchior did not understand. What's the point of living if you feel dead inside? That's why we have video games! Some merchants agree and are opening a restaurant somewhere, trying foods of the world. A tipster told them about Tabatha's curry, and they're scared to go into the Bloodwings' hangout because of the intimidating clientele, but Laphicet convinces them. They then mention their slogan mentions death... uhh, yeah, these guys don't have the right strategic minds for business. Magilou trolls them LOL.
  • Similarly, the bandit from when Eleanor first defected is here, too, and he's finally saved up enough gald to open his restaurant. This guy has his finances together and has turned over a new leaf, but... yet another Eleanor marriage proposal. Seriously, this comes up a LOT. Though this one is 100% justified since she lit a fire under him to turn his life around. And "Sweet Rejection" ends up being the name of the cake she suggested. Being a chef, I don't think he'll have problems physically escalating with cuties. Chicks love a guy who can cook.
  • Tabatha has just enough food to open up shop, since it was picked clean when she was hiding. The morons won't be disappointed! She also mentions that Shigure is a title and that Rokurou, having killed him, should be taking the name for himself... but he's not interested. He IS interested in proving his strength once he hears Shigure couldn't kill some dragon swordsman that's by the Empyrean's Throne. Well... looks like I'll have to clean up more than one monster when I'm there.
  • At the inn, I get a flashback about Claudin Asgard to back when Velvet was 16 y/o and Artorius was teaching her. Artorius ALSO has a skit sprite. LIKE HOLY SHIT:

...that said, it may just be that it's way cheaper than to animate the models, but it's still cool even this late in the game. Artorius says his teacher was a man named Claudin who developed the moves himself... are we talking about Claudin Asgard as mentioned in the book? If that's the case, Artorius is cheating death just like Melchior, as was Claudin. Until he died, seemingly to protect his student.
  • At Yseult, I hear about a talking pengyon. Magilou's first thought is "POKE BALL, GO!" Local lore says a talking pengyon brings judgment upon sinners when the end of the world is nigh. It's not a daemon but seems to be aggressive. Methinks it's a Normin, but then she says it's Jude Mathis. What the. Like literally: WHAT THE. Did not expect THAT, but Jude's delightfully ridiculous outfit from ToX1 could be mistaken for a pengyon, I guess. At night, I get to the pengyon, and it's unmistakably Sam Riegel (much like I noted at Normin Isle). Once the gang admits they eat fried pengyon... this one transforms into Jude. I don't recall Jude being able to transform like that even though he liked nature stuff. He's really weak so I beat him quickly. After, he says he's been defending the pengyons from poachers since they took him in when he got flung into this dimension. Velvet recognizes that he's too soft-hearted. That's nothing new. That's just Jude. He says Milla warped here too and we should look for her, since she doesn't seem to be in Yseult. Got it. Velvet notices Jude's self-sacrificial nature when it comes to Milla as well. (Doesn't she hate Milla?)
Anyway, I'm done for the night. Hope that was the substantial update you were looking for!

Phoenix's self-resurrection mystic arte triggers randomly, like the equipment effect you get for beating him. You just got really unlucky that first time.

The really abusable thing about Velvet's therion form is that she can't die while she's in it, so it's really easy to just power through stuff by tanking a hit to get to 1 hp, using the finisher, then going right back into therion form to keep up the invincibility. As long as you can keep getting souls before you get hit, Velvet won't die ever.

It's really weird that they don't refer to Eizen's sister by name, especially since anyone who played Zestiria knows who she is after the cutscene in Lothringen. My guess is since she's a background character, they didn't want to confuse the player with a name of someone who never actually shows up.

I may be misremembering, but didn't Artorius have a skit or two in the intro? But there's probably been more skit sprites in this game than any other Tales game, with characters like Teresa and Zaveid getting skit sprites in the short time they were with the party, along with all of your allies in some of the skits at Titania.

How discouraging. He really should have only had it once. That's it. Guaranteed, but not going to happen again. The strategic adjustment was helpful, at least. I only used 7 Life Bottles, so if he wanted to go another round...

This is precisely what I've been doing. I did die once against Phoenix before I could reactivate it since he timed it perfectly. It's not a foolproof strategy, but it works 75% of the time. You just have to recover a soul or get lucky that you won't lose any once you get those skills.

That last part is what gets me: Why does she never actually show up? Eizen is in Zesty, so why can't she be in here?

And yeah, there are a lot of skit sprites. I didn't remember if Artorius had one at the start because that was so long ago. It's insane just how many characters have one. They're wonderfully animated, too - but 2D Anime sprites are easier to do than character models. They just reused Jude's, for example, which goes back to my prior point about Eizen not getting to see his sister. They could have just reused her animations. Makes me think the voice actress (in Japan) was the issue.

  • I go to Haria to... find the place repopulated? A bunch of folks from Yseult are restoring island traditions, and migrants from Loegres are helping, too. Teresa's men are sending patrols... so Haria is still around in Zestiria after all. Huh! There's a funny part where a guy is left unvoiced but his girlfriend IS voiced... how did that one slip by, I wonder? (Also seems like us killing the troll is what triggered this.)
  • The Hellawes inn has a book that talks about transcending the possible to achieve the ideal. You do need to push those boundaries of what you think is possible, because something that seems impossible might actually be doable. But this also sounds like what the Abbey is doing in their evil scheme. This prompts another Artorius flashback where Seres (who has a skit sprite that I recall seeing when she incited the Titania jailbreak) says that he can't form pacts with four Empyreans at once. He says his predecessor could only achieve two, so he has to use Innominat to achieve his "ideal world" (aka a horrible dystopia). At this time, Velvet did not know of Seres's existence, and thought Artorius was talking to himself. It's deep stuff, but it's great advice for an individual. Not so much for a megalomaniac running an institution. I'm going to push the boundaries of what's possible to achieve my dreams. I have to if I want to truly be happy.
  • I find a Bloodwing with a new tip by the church in Taliesin. He says that Pengyon Milla (whom they're calling "Goldipen") wiped the floor with a hotshot praetor at the icecaps. It's so blatantly her. Eizen sends a sylphjay to Jude to make good on the promise to let him know anything we found out. I do find it quite weird that we get this information a long ways from where it happened. One would think Hellawes would be a more appropriate place for this.
  • I get to the shipwreck and Jude is... there already!? HOW? Pengyons can't fly very far. He says he ran all the way there, not stopping to eat or drink. He's as horny for some good goddess action as ever. Turns out that "Goldipen" isn't Milla - it's a shiny Pengyon. And out of nowhere, Milla shows up... in human form. Her voice sounds strange. Like I remember her VA being pretty mediocre in ToX1, but this sounds very phoned in to an even greater extent. She jumps to conclusions and attacks us for wanting to poach pengyons. Uhh, no, we were trying to reunite the two lovebirds. Er.. only one's a bird, but yeah, you know what I mean. This is a MUCH tougher fight than Jude (nowhere near Phoenix level), and she gets Elemental Mastery off... even though it doesn't do much damage for an allegedly Level 108 character either time she uses it. I take her down and know it would have been way tougher six levels earlier.
  • After the fight, Velvet points out that her boyfriend is right next to her. Milla looks into his eyes and realizes it. She name-drops Leia, Elize, and Alvin, but oddly not Rowan, and continues jumping to conclusions. This makes me want to replay the Xillias tbqh. The three of them - including this "familiar" shiny pengyon - leave to find a way home to Rieze Maxia. I'm trying to think of who or what this Goldipen might actually be but nothing is coming to mind. Again, I should replay the Xillias. They were fun, and I enjoyed the battles more than I am here (even if Berseria has superior plot and world-building). From this, I can upgrade my gear to level 10 - not that I need that right now. I can make do with +30.
That's it for now. May play a little later, if I can finish with some other things.

I decide I can quickly handle the Zaveid/Theodora fight. I get to the summit and find Theodora smacking Zaveid... and him enjoying it. Reminiscing of how she smacked him for his pickup line. Philosophical shit ensues. Eizen says "I do what I want" and Laphicet responds in kind by trying to - but failing - to protect Zaveid. Eizen then challenges Zaveid by asking if he's living right now, and that if his creed is to keep on living that this isn't a very good way of doing that. Eizen picks up Siegfried to use for himself.

The fight is... really easy. Like I had more trouble with the Fire Doe at the Fighal Icecaps than I did with this one, and that fight wasn't even worth mentioning. Much like the troll in Haria, the fight ends with a scripted Mystic Arte: Eizen's still-fucking-awesome Howling Dragon ends the job shortly after I sub him back in so he could do just that.

Zaveid tries to yell at him to stop and that he'd never forgive him, and Eizen doesn't care. I'm sure over the next thousand years, Zaveid will get over it and realize that it was because Theodora was no longer Theodora. She didn't even have that name in the fight! The malevolence emanating from her dying body starts to consume both men... and then Laphicet when he moves forward. This triggers Laphicet to eradicated the malevolence. All of it. He then tries to cure Theodora, but Zaveid stops him, knowing that even that won't help. Using Siegfried, Eizen finishes the job... but doesn't eat the dragon's heart. Zaveid epically rebuts with Eizen's own line: "Don't answer a question with another question." LOL.

Eizen says he can feel the malevolence within him and that he'll end up a dragon, which is a blessing in disguise since that curse is less to him than the one that's still giving him and his crew fits, and it's a just punishment for being a pirate. He says he'll probably hurt the people he wants to protect in that state, which means there's no doubt in my mind that it does happen to him in Zestiria. Zaveid agrees, recognizing that Theodora didn't recognize what she loved anyone, either, and that a mercy kill was the saving she needed. They then explain a huge amount of happenings in Zestiria: Zaveid killing Eizen after he's stopped being himself, in part as revenge for Theodora, and then marrying Eizen's sister. Since this doesn't involve the two idiot protagonists of that game, I believe it to be a minor spoiler. Zaveid says his true name is Fylk Zahdeya and Eizen says his is Ufemew Wexub... malakhim and their odd names, I tell ya. Fylk gets Siegfried back..

What it means to be alive... is to control the direction of our own lives, regardless of whether we get killed doing it or not. And I concur with that. That's precisely why I'm depressed: Because I feel like I have zero control in my life. I want to change that. I just don't have the money, the connections, the social abilities, or the luck to do so. And that gets me down. I need to fight it. I need to find a way... but enough about me. Laphicet is trying to take this to heart as best as he can. And Zaveid heads off, wherever the wind takes him... I presume that means this is the last we'll be seeing of him. Until Zestiria.

I wrap things up by going to the orphans in Taliesin. Zaveid stopped by, gave the parents a huge chunk of gald, and told the kids they'd always be together in their hearts because they're family. Zaveid always has a home here... even though he told them that Theodora's problems had been resolved and that he'd be traveling the world with her. That's not wholly untrue, but I think he didn't want the kids to know. They're only like 8 y/o. Too young to be thinking about death.

I overhear two exorcist thugs talking about transport units, and they mention having had their gald picked clean. GEE I WONDER. The party swiftly comes to the same conclusion I did: Zaveid robbed the Abbey of the money and put it to good use. Instead of the Abbey using it for something like smuggling opiates, which is probably what was up. Again.

After doing a huge equipment purge at Katz Isle (I've been doing a little here and there, but this took a while) and some slide puzzles to hoard Tales Coins, I conclude for the night.

To recap:
  • My PC won't start with my GPU attached to it
  • My PSU's fan isn't turning
  • I somehow can use the thing with just the mobo, but I doubt that'll last
  • The Intel 3000 chipset can technically run Berseria at a low framerate, but given the crap my PC's pulling, I don't wanna take any chances.
  • Anxiety is wild right now

I am sorry I'm not able to make the last push right now!

I ordered a new PSU from Newegg, which was $95 - $20 rebate so I think I got a good deal. I am hoping that will resolve the problem. A mobo upgrade is due to happen soon too, but I think that if that was the problem I wouldn't be able to use my machine at all.

I got a new audio jack for $8 so my speakers are functional again. No need to use my bulky headset just to hear now.

New power supply should be here by Wednesday. If that's the problem, like I think it is, I will be able to play. If my GPU is fried, I may have to replace that as well. We'll see. Berseria apparently can be run with an Intel 3000 chipset. Obviously not very well, but 1 > 0.

I'll obviously update you guys of what happens when the new part arrives.

Power supply installed. This one's fan works but my graphics card still won't boot. I am gonna double-check that everything is attached correctly, but I think I've got more problems than that. A memory test may offer insight.

Berseria WILL run with an Intel 3000 chipset, so this leaves the following options:
  1. I try to run it with my new PSU and see what I can make happen.
  2. I buy new parts and hold off until my PC can run it well.
  3. I just watch videos of the climax since I'm pretty sure that's about all I have left. There ain't much else I've missed, is there...? Rokurou's Code Red hunt is the only other one that comes to mind and that'll happen naturally during the final assault.
I will at least attempt to run the game once to see if it even works and get back to you. Probably not tonight though.

Okay, I ordered a new motherboard + RAM to go with this CPU that's just been sitting here. Should be here in a week. I'd think my GPU is what's dead, but this motherboard is 6.5 y/o so it's time anyway. Plus it'll have integrated graphics that can run most of what I'm going to want it to in the short term.

With that out of the way, I am gonna take a crack at playing. Keep in mind my graphics settings suck. So... yeah.

I left off in Taliesin and, uh... this is NOT the place where this crappy graphics driver wants to be. I have to reduce multiple settings so my PC doesn't crash once Eleanor starts using Spiral Hail in every damn battle. And I mean EVERY. What a boss.

But yeah, in the end, this looks circa Vesperia at best. It's still perfectly fine. I can make out what's going on. It's just that my resolution is low, my framerate is halved, and other graphical settings are lower than I want them to be. That is the problem with not having a graphics card that works.

I find the Toitolez outside the temple. He's got a letter from Eizen's sister (which Eizen is too distraught to read, so he has Laphicet do it), who doesn't seem to care that he's a pirate, in part because he helped her master malak artes through his advice. Magilou makes a snarky comment about her being as "roundabout and stubborn as her brother" but Laphicet mentions that she got the nor dolls and, while she doesn't love them, she's been, uh, hearing voices. If that isn't a Phoenix for the flame. And then we finally get her name: Edna. A name Eizen gave her. This is the last we'll be hearing of her for a thousand years, however. I presume this was put in so any 4 y/o brains playing this game could draw the connection to Zestiria. The problem is that this game is rated T for teen, so the only 4 y/o brains that would be playing it would be, uh.... you know...

The Toitolez won't let me shop so I go back to town. He's still there when I get back. Go figure. I am HOPING that this junk heap runs this massive behemoth of a Ziggurat but don't blame me if it doesn't. It's slow, but... okay, I guess. The new enemies are weak - likely because of the sheer amount of sidequesting there was. Not my game design choice.

I encounter two freed malakhim on the rafters. They thank us for awakening the elementals and restoring their free will, and continue to insist after Velvet says she was acting in her own interests. They say many of their kind are too scared of malevolence to go near humans, and that before Innominat began brainwashing them, they were a peaceful people. This does not change that Velvet and Eizen say "If you get in our way to save your friends, we'll have to kill you. We can't go easy on anyone." Logical, so they won't intervene and will instead work toward the future they believe in. This is such a weird conversation, honestly. There's hostility... over something that I didn't quite pick up was implied... and then they give us information about the armatus technology and divine artifacts? They have one - a bow that I presume resurfaces in Zestiria - that they'll use to help the knowledge of these fiends' misdeeds as well as the technology. Their goal is mutual consent for armitization, which... I think is the basis for the Zestiria battle system? I THINK? The divine artifact for Innominat is complete, so Artorious will armatize with him... and we can kill both fuckers in one go!

At any rate, I stop for right now to avoid putting too much strain on my CPU. Don't want to overclock it and go without for a week, now do I?

Okay, so Newegg says I have to return the defective unit (and everything with it) before they send a replacement. I requested it Friday evening and wasn't able to get it shipped out until today (I was at a con all day Saturday, and UPS doesn't operate on Sundays). It may take as much as two weeks for the entire process to complete. UPS says the package should make it out to Industry, California on Thursday. I expect a replacement to be here a week from then. I just hope that one works.

Le ugh. Part of me just wants to watch this climax on YouTube and get it over with, even though... I wanna fight these bastards myself. Although the Big Bad is already dead and after killing it, there was sidequest padding galore, and that kinda squashed my hatred for the villains here (Melchior the most, but Artorius and Innominat too). I think that they should've made some of these sidequests mandatory parts of the game earlier on and cut a couple out.

Newegg should've received the piece of junk this morning. I am HOPING they'll process it Monday, since they didn't today, but...

The least fun game in the world? The Waiting Game. I really hope this replacement mobo works, else my plan is 1) return this one for refund, 2) write one-star review, and 3) buy a different one. Two DOAs is unacceptable especially after this insanely long wait. They should have just sent a replacement out once I shipped my old one, and if I failed to include a part I'd be responsible for shipping that on my own dime or they'd double-charge me.

I also don't know why I had to go through Newegg instead of having ASRock repair it, but I guess that's the ropes for a budget board. With this old thing, I sent it in to Gigabyte to repair it for a similar issue way back when.

Intel told me that I need a graphics card. The bent pins didn't help, either, so my first mobo was defective for sure. Second....? IDK.

Been researching those. Will get one in a day or two.

Yeah, it's been pretty rough. Building your own PC can be annoying, but it's worth it!

Graphics card is here. However, continuing the trend, my CPU fan is busted and I can't fit it in my motherboard. 3/4 of the ends are split and I can't straighten them so it won't cool properly. Getting a warranty replacement. Intel is shipping it out in the next couple days. Just hold tight. I REALLY THINK this is the last of it, and I'll have a fully functional rig whenever the fan gets here. Friday at the earliest. Setup will take a day or two.

I have the support chat logs, video of the 1st DOA mobo, pics of the bent pins and all that if you guys wanna see them lol

Two words: FUCKING. FINALLY.

Rig's all set up and all systems are go! I hope to play in the next day or two because I still got a lot of things to install/map/setup etc. This may be a bit, but it's almost time!

Here, let's listen to Meaning of Birth again, because Wynaut:
