businesses from participating in in-person Black Friday sales? Surely, nothing could exacerbate the current pandemic more than allowing mass-gatherings to take place nation-wide?

Pretty much this. The government can't force a company to not have sales or intentionally shut down the stores on that day or anything. As a result, while they can say 'don't do it', there's no way they could actually legally STOP it.

Because that would be communism and this is America!

Freedom means dying on the alter of the All Mighty Dollar; if you're not willing to die for a 5% discount on something that was already marked up by 50%, you're a damn dirty commie who hates freedom.

Someone hasn't heard of Blue Laws. Many have been repealed (as they are dumb) but the government absolutely can force businesses to close.

Considering a lot of people already consider the lockdowns a gross over-reach of governmental power (not saying if it's right, wrong, or true) I think enacting something like that right now would lead to a full-on riot and possible revolt.

literally what? If we did things on republican terms it would be illegal to be gay, everyone would be given an AR-15 on their 16th birthday, Sunday church service is mandated by law, and being caught with any drugs or pornography is an immediate lifetime enslavement or execution in the streets

...because it's no different than any other day in retail? The crowding might be a little worse, but everything else is the same. And iirc last year a lot of states effectively banned in-person Black Fridays.

And in terms of impact, family gatherings are going to have a MUCH larger effect than Black Friday sales.

And even if they tried to shut down that day, it would just happen on another day. And trying for weird regulations like limiting the number of people inside during a major sale would likely increase the number of fatal stampedes.

I like how you say this, yet immediately acknowledge that fatal stampedes happen. Literal fatal stampedes qualify as "the crowding might be a little worse"?

And in terms of impact, family gatherings are going to have a MUCH larger effect than Black Friday sales.

This, however, is probably true. Black Friday sales will draw more people, but they'll be in larger, better-ventilated spaces for less time where they don't spend long in close quarters with any given person (outside of those that they line up in front of/behind, which will cap at 4 people total), and many of those people will be masked (depending on the area). Family gatherings will be almost completely maskless and involve spending several hours in close contact with people.

Of course, the fact that family gatherings will be happening right before Black Friday sales means the two effects will likely end up combining to be even worse than they might otherwise be on their own. But hey, at least people have the freedom to buy a bunch of discount stuff they don't need and have a big family dinner on the arbitrary day they want. Because apparently that's what's important.

Considering how typical Thanksgiving gatherings tend to be, this might be an escalation about as much as going from a jog to running after an ice cream truck with a reputation for drugs.
