i played a bunch of matches, its just fully functional Halo as far as I can tell. doesnt feel like Im testing anything.

So every map runs fine except this 4v4 map with these neon signs or whatever everywhere. Even on low the map doesn't unload a lot of lighting and reflections and it runs like crap.

All of the big team battle maps play fine but some of the 4v4 maps they decided because they were small that they could keep a ton of particle effects even on the lowest settings and the fps drops are huge.

That said, everyone in my party has crashed at least once pretty much.

I dont have a great memory for the specific gameplay differences of the various games, but at least superficially its reminding me of Halo 3 because they brought Brute stuff back. And Im into it, because the Chopper is super cool.

Reach is the one I spent the most time on. Is there stuff like reticle bloom?

yeah, I think so. And theres a standard FPS sprint + climbing up ledges to make it a bit more mobile than classic Halo.
And theres something like armor abilities, but theyre limited use instead of just on a cooldown like in Reach. One of them is a cool repulsor that can knock back enemies and deflect back grenades (and maybe rockets? Not sure yet))

other little things:

shotgun feels worse. Doesnt just one shot blast fools anymore, but I think it fires faster / has a bit more range to try to make up for that.

plasma pistol no longer EMPs vehicles, but there are new shock weapons that can do it.

theres an updated plasma carbine that seems like an attempt to merge the old carbine and the plasma rifle, which is totally removed

pistol seems ok? Not the best its ever been, but not bad I guess.

As someone who has never played Halo before, are there any general gameplay tips I should know?

I was kind of confused about how the shields work. The tutorial said to break the shield then you can use a headshot to quickly kill enemies. Does that mean that headshots aren't worth it while the target still has shields?

I never thought about that before, so I looked it up to be sure. The answer is mostly no.

shielded enemies dont take extra damage from headshots, but if the damage from a head shot would drain their whole shield + do more damage, the headshot kills them. So sniper rifle headshots are lethal regardless of shields, and battle rifle bursts can potentially finish off a shield + do a headshot. Three bursts should kill a full shield enemy if the last burst hits their head.

The reception to the gameplay seems pretty dang positive all around.
but the reception to the battlepass / rate of progression is super negative. Hopefully they make some changes there. It feels so slow.

It's obnoxiously slow and I hated how they replaced the credit system from Reach with a progression system for the MCC.

That being said I already paid for the BP. >_>

I'm glad I play for the gameplay and not the cosmetics because they are going to be real predatory.

So does the kill 5 enemy Spartans with the Sidekick Pistol challenge mean in one match only? Because I got four kills with it in one match and then got some in the next match and it didnt complete the challenge. Thats really annoying.

No. I got after multiple matches. You should see it count up after the match ends when it shows your xp.

So it seems they did some adjustments to the progression system, which were pretty desperately needed. Now you get at least 50 xp every match, and xp boosts are now an hour instead of 30 minutes. Wish I had held off on using them.

Yeah I played multiple matches after that where I got at least one pistol kill and it didnt increment, and then after a match where Im almost positive I didnt use the pistol at all, it finally completed itself. Im guessing there are some bugs in the challenge tracking.

Some of them were bugged before the update and theoretically those got fixed now, but maybe they managed to break more of them in the process.

The default 50xp thing doesn't seem that useful since it's per match. I like playing the 12v12 mode more, and those can take a long time, depending on what game you get. I ended up getting CTF three times in a row last night, and they all ran out the clock...

On that note, one of my challenges now is to complete a Total Control map. I played six games of 12v12 and didn't get it once. It was all CTF or Power Seed games...

Yeah, I'm just enjoying the game. I don't really care about progression (especially since most of the rewards suck.) It's a bit of a shame for them though, I'm liking the game so much I'd put down the money for the battlepass just because of that if it wasn't just so poorly made.

There's an event going on right now by the way. Unlock stuff by completing event challenges. Like the battle pass it kind of sucks, but the games are fun.

Progression is changing;

• 1st Game = 300XP
• 2nd Game = 200XP
• 3rd Game = 200XP
• 4th Game = 100XP
• 5th Game = 100XP
• 6th Game = 100XP
• 7th+ Game = 50XP

Can't wait to unlock some challenge rerolls!

i feel like theyre in a really tough situation with the battle pass stuff

compared to Fortnite or whatever, Halo just has such a specific look, and if you stray too far from that its going to just ruin the games aesthetic and piss off old fans

so theyre stuck slowly dripping out cosmetics, and doing ridiculous stuff like making you unlock colors on a per-armor-core basis, because otherwise theyre going to run out of Halo-looking stuff too quickly and theyll have to start releasing absurd looking shit and crossovers

maybe at some point theyll let you play as an Elite or even a Brute. that would fill some space.

This was the same with Counter Strike. They did it anyway, people got angry. Said it was unfair for competition. Then the game just kinda grew anyway...

I still haven't bought a Battlepass mainly because all the stuff I get when I level up that's locked is just different variants of random machinery that are attached to your armor. Not even remotely interesting.

Also in Gold 5, which is average? above average? I don't know, but I'm having a ton of fun, but I do get the frustration of the lack of a slayer playlist. Hope it comes soon.

I've been playing Halo since the original and I don't think I've ever gotten a K/D over 3.
