Phase 2 of RFA has ended and because no user RFAs were targeted, I will go ahead and conclude RFA

  • The Bengals have signed Dolphins DE Kony Ealy to a 4 year deal. The Dolphins have elected not to match and will receive the Bengals 2nd round pick.
  • The Broncos have signed Pioneers SS Vonn Bell to a 3 year deal. The Pioneers have elected not to match and will receive the Broncos 1st and 3rd round picks.
  • The Lions have signed Dolphins K Chandler Catanzaro to a 3 year deal. The Dolphins have elected not to match and will receive the Lions 4th round pick.
  • The Seahawks have signed Dolphins DT Timmy Jernigan to a 5 year deal. The Dolphins have elected not to match and will receive the Seahawks 1st and 3rd round picks.
  • The Seahawks have signed Dolphins CB Steven Nelson to a 5 year deal. The Dolphins have elected not to match and will receive the Seahawks 2nd round pick.

Unrestricted Free Agents (AKA Signing Your Remaining Free Agents)

Any player of yours whose contract expired and was not part of the previous event will be included here. This is an extremely straightforward event. You either sign or you do not sign players, Those you do stay on your team, those you don't enter the free agent pool.

When you receive the PM with your slash lines, remember that those are not the deals you have to sign them to. With a few exceptions that I will lay out, you can sign anyone (pending the age/max length rule) to deals 1-7 years in length. If you wish to give a player a custom offer, I might be available to do live signings on Discord or the spreadsheet. Otherwise, we can bounce PMs off of each other for a while (remember that there is a deadline though and delay in response could be a day or longer). If you wish to offer someone a deal of a different length but do not want to bother with the financials, you can merely say you want to give X player the default deal for Y years.

There are only two wrinkles for this event. One is that a few players might hold out for better deals. I can confirm that one user has a pair of holdouts. What happens is that I will isolate them in the PM and tell you their base deal. If you elect not to sign them, they will stay on your team without playing a down for you until you trade them, release them, or give into their contract demands. Keep in mind that any guaranteed money still left on their contract (annual bonus) is transferred over to the new contract.

The second wrinkle is that some players hate your team to where they will only sign via the franchise tag, which is a one year deal that pays them the average of the Top 5 salaries at their position or 120% of what they made last season, whichever is higher. I will isolate those players and also tell you how much money that comes out to as of this moment. The franchise tag has rarely been used, so while I am not expecting anyone will use it, you never know.

For those who don't remember, the age/max length rule is that you can't sign a player to a longer contract if it will take them past their age-34 season. You can however sign a player through their age-34 season if it was already included in their default contract. For example, if a 33-year-old player asks for a 3 year contract, you can sign him to that deal because it was part of the default deal. You cannot sign them to a 4+ year contract though.

Also remember that sign-and-trades are not allowed. Players signed to 1 year contracts are ineligible to be traded (RFAs signed via tenders are exempt from this rule). Players signed to multi-year contracts are ineligible to be traded until Week 9 of the regular season.

Signing Your UFAs Rules

1. I will PM everyone their UFAs and the slash line (length/total/signing bonus) of their desired deal. I will also include and isolate any players who are either holding out or hate your team to where they will only sign with you if you place the franchise tag on them.

2. You will PM me back with the following format (using two players from my team as an example)

Re-signing:
ROLB Todd du Plessis - 4 / $8.48 mil / $1.32 mil
or
ROLB Todd du Plessis - 3 year default

Franchise Tag:
Nobody

Not re-signing:
HB Jonathan Stewart

The deadline for signing your UFAs will be Sunday, December 19th at 11:59 PM ET

And our first trade of the offseason

Bears receive:
TE Rob Gronkowski (87 overall, 31 years old)

Bengals receive:
WR Josh Briscoe (86 overall, 33 years old)

Bears will incur a $2.4 mil cap penalty to turn a $7.61 mil cap hit into a $4.42 mil cap hit
Bengals will incur an $800k cap penalty to turn a 5.22 mil cap hit into an $8.03 mil cap hit

The Bears made strides on offense last season, but they still have work to do. With limited cap space and an excess at WR, they decided that a trade route might be the best approach. Their current TEs include one on an expired deal who had 6 rec for 32 yards in his two game audition, one playing on a tender who had 213 yards in 14 starts before being benched, and a 71 overall who is just a cheap bench option. Gronk was displaced in Cincy, but he was one of the better offensive TEs in the league during his starting time there.

The Bengals were primed to undergo a bit of an offensive makeover. The passing game was awful last season and having lost their top WR in consecutive offseasons, that left them Chris Hogan as the only 80+ on the roster. Briscoe does have an injury history but has shown he can be an above-average starting WR at times, and they could desperately use the talent there. The Bengals have two mid-upper 80s TEs, which is a waste, so they use the one who has been on the bench the past two seasons to grab a new starter elsewhere.

The Bears understood the trade parameters, the financial impact, and Gronk's history. This trade is now official.

Another trade to announce

Bears receive:
Wildcats 3rd round pick (82nd overall)

Wildcats receive:
C Eric Wood (85 overall, 32 years old)

The Bears will incur a $1.7 mil cap penalty to wipe out a $3.81 mil cap hit

The Wildcats will assume a $2.96 mil cap hit

The Bears with little cap space, no draft picks prior to the 4th round, and backup C Bobby Crosby's 20 blocks against 1 sack allowed last season decided that Wood was expendable and worth giving up for a late Top 100 pick.

The Wildcats have arguably had the league's worst rushing attack since Laurence Maroney retired and one of the weaker interior OL to boot. While he has significant issues with staying healthy, Wood has averaged 57 blocks in each season he has played a full slate of games.

Both parties demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters, the financial impact, and what each team hopes to achieve. This trade is now official.

More trades

Cowboys receive:
HB Devonta Freeman (86 overall, 26 years old)

Jaguars receive:
TE Darren Waller (80, 23)
HB Ty Montgomery (82, 23)

The Cowboys will incur a $1.52 mil cap penalty to turn $4.90 mil in cap hits into a $3.98 mil cap hit

The Jaguars will incur a $3.75 mil cap penalty to turn a $5.23 mil cap hit into $3.88 mil in cap hits

The Cowboys did not adequately replace Hall of Fame HB Darius Walker last season. Freeman has rushed for at least 4.1 YPC in four of his five seasons in the league. While he has spent only one season as a starter, the former 1st round pick has shown enough promise in limited roles for the Cowboys to take a chance on him in exchange for two former 2nd round picks that did not have clear opportunities going forward.

The Jaguars signed re-signed Freeman last season to officially become Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson's heir. Only, they signed Eddie Lacy late in free agency based on his gaudy TD totals, and Lacy ultimately became the future. Freeman decided to hold out, and the Jags had a trade partner with the Cowboys. In exchange, they get TE Darren Waller who was a backup last season as a rookie but could be the long-term replacement for recently retired and Hall of Famer Brent Celek. They also get HB Ty Montgomery who should back up Lacy. He has not run the ball well to begin his career with a 3.3 YPC on over 200 carries, but he rates as one of the top pass-catching HBs in the league, a stark contrast to Lacy, so he could be an excellent 3rd-down HB.

The Jags have demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters, the financial impact, and what both parties hope to achieve. This trade is official.

I mentioned this in Discord awhile back but not here, but the draft will probably be different this season unless I delay it to mid-January.

For those new or unaware, typically we do the live draft across a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday would be evening ET while the other two would begin in the afternoon. The three weekends after the deadline include Christmas, New Years, and my birthday, so it will likely be shifted to mid-week, all beginning in the evening ET. I haven't decided if I will do somewhere in the 27th-30th range this month or 2nd-5th range next month. It will depend if I am particularly busy in the days following Christmas.

Live NFL Draft

This is a 7-round affair where teams select college players. There are 32 picks in each round for a total of 224 selections overall. We break this down into three real-life days. Rounds 1 and 2 are on the first day, rounds 3 and 4 are on the second day, and rounds 5 through 7 are the final day. The draft takes place in the spreadsheet as that is where all the info is, and I totally failed in my lone attempt to do a draft in both the spreadsheet and Discord.

In one of the posts below, I will include the draft order again as well as updated draft pick ownerships. I only include ownership of other teams' picks. If you wish to attend the draft at all, I require that you own a Google account and either PM/DM me or post here the email associated with it so that I can include you as having permission in the spreadsheet and you can sign in and enter the chat function which is located near the top right of the spreadsheet. Most of you have done so in previous years, but there could be a few people wanting to attend this year but have yet to receive permission. You must be on a desktop/laptop to access the chat function.

NFL Draft Rules

1. When it is your time to pick, type your selection in the spreadsheet

2. There is a 5 minute pick limit, which starts when I say something along the lines of "X team is on the clock"

3. If no pick has been made after 5 minutes, I will select the player for you

4. If a user is not present at the time they are on the clock, they will be auto-drafted via rule #3 until they notify me of their return

If I can't or don't want to be here for the draft, what are my options?

Queue - You give me a list of players in order of priority. It can be as few as one and as many as the 250+ prospects that will eventually be in that sheet.

Draft Strategy - You give me a vague or specific set of instructions on how to draft your players. An example of this would be:
Draft best available CB in 1st round
Draft best available player in 2nd-4th rounds
Draft best available player for a position of need in 5th-7th rounds.

Conditionals - You give me a list of conditionals. Unlike the other two examples, this one is best used if you only think that you will be unavailable for a single round. Using WR Michael Thomas as an example:
1. Draft WR Michael Thomas
2. Draft the best available OT with a 1st round grade
3. Draft the best available player for a position of need

Even if you plan to attend the draft on any or all days, it would really help me out if you send me something from the above list.

I cannot stress enough just how important this is to me. Even if you plan to attend the draft on some or all days, there is only one person guaranteed to be present for the draft, and that's me because otherwise there is no draft. So the draft runs as smoothly as it possibly, I create a spreadsheet where I craft detailed draft plans for all user teams in case I have to draft for them. If I am given a strategy/queue/conditional (especially one that encompasses the entire draft) from a team, then I do not have to waste my time and effort for said team. Please do this as having to come up with draft plans for 20+ user teams would possibly take me 10+ hours to do, and in this particular season, the draft is coming up rather soon.

Another trade

Dolphins receive:
DT Jordan Phillips (83 overall, 24 years old)
WR Quincy Enunwa (81, 25)

Steelers receive:
WR Philly Brown (83, 24)
FS Briean Boddy-Calhoun (81, 25)

Dolphins will incur a $550k cap penalty to turn $5.86 mil in cap hits into $5.52 mil in cap hits

Steelers will incur an $890k cap penalty to turn $6.41 mil in cap hits into $5.31 mil in cap hits

The Dolphins are deep at WR and offensive options that while Brown has been an excellent reserve in his three seasons with the league (one in Miami), they can afford to see him go. At FS, they employ a 28-year-old Tony Jefferson, arguably the best at his position. With backup FSs seeing little playing time, he had no future in Miami, or at least a path to more playing time. Getting back Enunwa means very little as he's likely a one-and-done but he fills the WR hole that Brown left and at a lower cost. The prize is Phillips helping restock a DL that has seen three players already depart in the offseason. There's a chance that he will be lost in RFA next offseason, but this is an excellent use of non-starting player personnel to shore up a glaring weakness while also saving cap and filling an expensive hole.

The Steelers had been targeting Brown, and they get two potential starters (Calhoun will compete at FS) better than what they currently. Brown is both a ratings and stats upgrade over Enunwa, and DL is an area of strength right now, so they felt comfortable taking away their weakest member to help fortify the secondary.

The Steelers understand the trade parameters, the financial impact, the history of all players involved, and what both teams could achieve from this trade. It is now official

I was going to wait for the others to post their mocks too but I don't know if I'll be around later today to do so.

Fixed it now. Apparently a few minutes too late to edit it in.

Family is starting to arrive and I don't think I'll have time to edit it anymore tomorrow so let's consider this my final version. Had to change some things with the Steelers/Dolphins trade so hopefully I didn't miss anything.

I am working on my draft strategy. I'll make sure to send at least the day 1 strat tonight if I don't have the whole thing figured out in a bit.

Here is the seasonal combined thing in case people want to follow along during the draft. First time in a while I'm not scrambling at the last second to get it done or even doing it during the draft lol

Trade

Steelers Receive:
Bucs 2nd Round Pick (35th overall)
Wildcats S17 7th Round Pick
Wildcats S18 7th Round Pick

Wildcats Receive:
Steelers 5th Round Pick (140th overall)
Steelers S17 2nd Round Pick
Steelers S18 2nd Round Pick

Steelers want to address several positions with high picks and also have the option to try and trade up into the first. Also, as much as Shattered likes to hide it, he is in fact a masochist and when publicly complaining of the cap situation that they placed themselves in, they look for ways to worsen the issue, most likely with the team having to pay the ultimate price for his indulges. I have chosen to enable this behavior.

The Wildcats having already owned three 2nds in this draft and little cap space decided it was best to trade one of them for future picks and get back a Day 3 pick for a cheap roster hole fill.

Both parties demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters and what they hoped to achieve. This trade is now official.

This was my 1st season in like 8 years where my cap situation looked manageable without mass cuts (5 holes / 14.2m). Couldn't have that.
