Coaching Changes

I say this every year, but I have found no evidence that suggests that your coaching staff has any impact on your team in a pure sim like this. Any changes in the coaching strategy as a result of a new coaching staff can be negated through user intervention. That being said, I like to reveal coaching changes since I believe most of us are curious about them.

- Explain what happens if you idle
- Slash Line Explained
- Send Ravens stat PM
- Update spreadsheet to remove retired players, adjust ratings, adjust ages/contracts, make sure to include AI to User financial changes and vice versa, etc...

Surprised that Belton and McNeal retired but helps out my cap so not complaining.

With Belton and Tulloch retiring I now no longer have a single player on the team who was on the team prior to me taking over.

Tufts and Parrish are the longest serving players on my team entering their 11th season after being drafted in the 3rd and 4th round in my first draft. McClain is the next one up entering his 10th season. Then rather hilariously the next man up is CB Johnson entering his 8th season with me despite not having a single recording stat (I assume he has played some snaps at some point). I don't even remember the trade I made to get him other than him being a throw in for cap/roster spot reasons.

Tulloch, Belton and Campbell were all big parts of my team. Tulloch put up those stats despite not starting until he was 30. Belton scored 41 TDs for me. And Campbell anchored my FS for 9 seasons so could possibly be my most successful FA signing.

Bears are putting the following players on the trade block:

WR Josh Briscoe (86 OVR, 33 years old)
C Eric Wood (85 OVR, 32 years old)
OT Jake Long (88 OVR, 32 years old)

All can be had relatively cheaply. Would likely be looking for draft picks. Possibly DLine if we could make that work too. Shoot me a message if you're potentially interested. I'll be sending out feelers as well.

B8NFLL Hall of Fame Ballot

The following posts will contain players and their career accomplishments up for immortalization. The candidates among this season's retired players were so stacked that in order to provide 15 candidates, I had to knock out players that might have received at least one yes vote.

Participation is of course voluntary, and you can PM them to me, DM me on Discord, post in the topic, discuss or whatever. You decide what your criteria for selection is. You can base it solely off of the context of B8NFLL, compare to real life stats, or some marriage of the two. We had a decent turnout last season, but given how active participation in the league has its peaks and valleys, I don't think that I will have a specific target percentage of Yes votes that will ensure enshrinement. It will of course be north of 50% at the very least.

As always, I will publicly reveal my ballot.

QB Chris Leak - Yes

He will almost certainly go down as a Top 5 QB who played his entire career during B8NFLL. His 80+ passer rating streak will almost certainly never be broken. It's unfortunate he wasn't as decorated that he should have been, but at least he went out on a high note in winning his first playoff game in his final season.

QB Vince Young - Yes

Young as an awful to above-average passer for first eight seasons of his career until a late-career renaissance in his final five, but he gets here mostly on the merit of his legs, awards, and his immense impact in making the Cowboys the powerhouse that they still are today.

QB Brady Quinn - No

Quinn is a fascinating case, one that I wouldn't be suprised I regret saying no to as the project winds down. He was a good starter for the Broncos, great starter for the Bills, but it wasn't until he came to Washington that he became elite, and he had 84+ passer ratings in five of his six seasons there and might be one of the few QBs we will see eclipse 30000 yards and 200 TDs with good supplemental stats. He is a fantastic borderline case.

HB Romance Taylor - Yes

He backed up Bears HC Corey Dillon for a few seasons before succeeding him and soon losing his job to another 1st round HB who will probably be on the ballot next season. He then exploded for the Jets, being an MVP candidate in his first season en route to being one of the league's best HBs in the league in his seven seasons in New York before finishing up his career with what was looking to be one of his finest seasons with the Rams before injuries derailed it. Injuries caused him to start 16 games only three times in his career, but his counting stats and efficiency still managed to be great, and his peak and impact were unquestionable. He also fumbled the ball just 13 times in his eight seasons out of Oakland, showing how much he grew as a player upon entering his peak years. He's a no-brainer to me.

HB LaMarcus Coker - Yes

After Tiki Barber retired, it wasn't incumbent former 1st rounder LenDale White but Coker who ultimately became the future for the Broncos. He may not have received any accolades (being injured played a major role because you will have any Pro Bowl nods stripped from you and given to someone else if you are injured when it is to be played), but don't let that fool you into thinking that he wasn't an elite running back, and a consistent one at that. Rushing for 1000+ yards in his final nine seasons, with a 4.3+ YPC in all of them, he helped the Broncos offense from falling apart from lackluster passing games and make them one of the more competitive franchises in the league.

HB Lynell Hamilton - No

I'm impressed that his counting stats were where they were despite his lengthy history of seasons ending within the first quarter of the season. He did have a positive impact as a dual-threat back, but he was generally an average-to-above average for the majority of his career. Some might vote yes for counting stats, but given we will generally have multiple HB candidates every season, I'm going to have slightly higher standards there than the other positions, and I just don't think he's a hall of famer.

TE Brent Celek - Yes

A TE will eventually get in. It might not be until Dane Guthrie, Zach Miller, Tim Wright, but it will happen. I think Celek should be the first though. From his underdog beginning as a TE taken in the 4th and supposed to back up fellow rookie and 2nd rounder Vernon Davis, he won the starting job right away and never relinquished it. In spite of being in an offense in which he was generally the 4th or 5th option, he was consistently among the best TEs in a season, as evidenced by his whopping seven Pro Bowls. Those seasonal averages are great, and would look better if not for his final two seasons in which he had a combined 61 rec for 479 yards. What ultimately solidifies him as a yes vote for me is his great blocking numbers that translated to HB Adrian Peterson's illustrious career and also his 53 total TDs, which might take a long time to be matched as the next highest in the league is at 41, and that player just retired (two still active players are at 40 but are 35 and 34 years old).

C Chris Spencer - Yes

He certainly wasn't on a hall of fame trajectory based on his spot-starter Buffalo career where he had 96 blocks against 18 sacks. There's absolutely nothing wrong with those marks, and I'm sure many would kill for an interior OL to have a 5+ block vs sack ratio, but when he came to the 49ers, he was an absolute beast, putting up 495 blocks vs 54 sacks allowed (9.1 blocks per sack!) en route to four Pro Bowls in his nine seasons on the bay as well as blocking for HB Tatum Bell's record-setting MVP season.

DE Travis Johnson - Yes

Elite as a run stopper and pass rusher? Check
Most career sacks in B8NFLL history, with 18 more than the second highest? Check
Nine Pro Bowls in an 11-season span? Check
Never missed a game in his career, starting all 240 games in B8NFLL? Check

I might have been his GM for 12 of those seasons, but he is might the most no-brainer candidate on the list.

DT Gabe Watson - Yes

The 33rd pick in the first NFL draft in S2, he was maybe the only draft pick who didn't fall on their face or immediately get buried when the GM became active in that free agency. In spite of missing roughly two seasons worth of games due to injuries and playing at a position notoriously poor at aging, he managed to stay a starter from beginning to end across two franchises and put up some excellent numbers. It is quite difficult to put up double digit FFs and FRs as a DL, flirt with 100 sacks, and also be great against the run. Longevity is key for DL, and while his peak may not be that of those who have, currently are, or will be on the ballot, his consistency and ability to remain a starter is something that I value highly. His biggest knock is his perceived impact. Playing on some bad Bears defensive teams and average-to-good Washington defenses, it probably wasn't hall of fame caliber. I voted for LeKevin Smith a few seasons back with similar seasonal averages, but he had a higher impact on some excellent Lions defenses in addition to being a former sack leader. Depending on whether you value impact or personal stats more highly, Watson might have a stronger or weaker case than the Hall of Famer Smith did, but Watson is a yes vote from me.

MLB Korey Hall - No

He has a very nice story as a former 6th round pick drafted to back up Ray Lewis in Jacksonville only for Rey Maualuga to be drafted a few seasons later and be the one to succeed Lewis. He then proceeds to get progressively better as a starter through a few stops and ends his career at his very best. He honestly reminds me of former Hall of Fame finalist Gerris Wilkinson as a well-traveled and underrated player whose career was much better than anyone realized. Hall had higher highs though, so he has a stronger candidacy, but I ultimately think it falls short of hall of fame worthy.

DB Devin Hester - Yes

CBs (and FSs) are so hard to evaluate, but his INTs (he has 12 more than anyone else in their career) alone make him a definitive yes. His excellent history as a returner, perceived impact in the pass game as evidenced by his ability to keep his rating in the mid-to-upper 80s in his entire career, and ending it as the Super Bowl MVP are just icing on the cake.

FS Ko Simpson - Yes

His career is almost stastically identical to recent enshrinee Tom Zbikowski, down to a defensive rookie of the year award and starting every game of their 12 year career. Simpson's stats are slightly more impressive which help him pull even to me believing he had slightly less impact on defense.

SS Lewis Baker - Yes

Huge playmaker in the mold of Donovin Darius and Michael Lewis, two SSs who combined for five DB of the Year awards. Baker also has one to his name. He might not have had the postseason success that he deserved, but he was the best player on some playoff teams in Buffalo where the best years of his career took place. An easy yes from me.

SS Jessie Daniels - No

Another excellent borderline case. I have personal attachment to him being the one who drafted him to backup fellow 1st round rookie Bernard Pollard in San Francisco during S3, only for the Pioneers franchise to recognize him as starter worthy during S4's RFA period, solidifying himself as an excellent SS but unable to get Pro Bowl recognition with the likes of Michael Lewis, Lewis Baker, and numerous others playing at an equally high level in the AFC. After being traded mid-season to the Browns as a 33-year-old, he became less of a dual threat safety and more of a punisher as his tackle, sack, and FF rates went way up while his INTs and perceived impact in coverage went way down. His career narratively and statistically remind me of several candidates that I said no to previously, such as Thomas Davis, Michael Huff, and Keon Jackson, with two of those also receiving DB of the Year awards in their final season in what was otherwise a lightly decorated career. I would feel better about saying yes if he didn't play so drastically different in his two stops as a starter, so I feel like I ultimately have to say no.

Offseason in a Nutshell

There are four major events during the offseason. They will be explained in full detail when the time comes, but here they are:

1. Restricted Free Agency
2. Unrestricted Free Agents
3. NFL Draft + Signing Rookies
4. Free Agency

Restricted Free Agency - This is the most complex of the four, yet it is the one that has the lowest activity. A small sub-section of players whose contracts run out are considered restricted free agents. These players can, but do not have to, be signed by their original teams to a 1 year contract at one of three fixed amounts. Those that do sign can then be offered contracts by any of the other 31 teams to multiyear deals. Any team who has a player sign a contract with another team will then have the opportunity to match said contract or let them sign with another team and receive NFL Draft pick compensation.

Unrestricted Free Agents - Any player with an expired contract who was not considered a restricted free agent is thus an unrestricted free agent. Teams then can elect to re-sign the remaining players or let them enter the free agent market. Unlike the previous event, the other 31 teams cannot do anything to you, so you are free to operate without outside pressure. There are a few more wrinkles, but it is pretty straightforward.

NFL Draft + Signing Rookies - This is an event where all 32 teams can select college football players to join their team. Each team normally has seven draft picks, one for each of the seven rounds of the draft. The order that a team selects is based on their record and playoff performance, if applicable, from the season before. Earlier in the topic, I mentioned this season's draft order, and all teams are free to trade draft picks. After the draft, a separate period of time is devoted to signing all the players that a team drafted.

Free Agency - All players not signed or re-signed in the previous three events enter the free agent pool, and this is the time that every team is able to bid on the services of those without a team (aka free agents).

What happens if you idle during the offseason?

For starters, anyone is free to ask me for advice at any point, and if real life requires you to take a small break at some point that prevents you from doing an event or more, feel free to ask me to temporarily take over your team, and I will make decisions as if I were in charge of your team. However, if the worst comes to pass, I have safety nets in place to protect user teams.

Should you idle during Restricted Free Agency, I will sign a random two players, if applicable, to random tender levels. I will not participate in the second phase, and should any of your RFAs be signed by other players during that phase, I will default to not matching the deal in the third and final phase.

Should you idle during Unrestricted Free Agency, I officially sign a random half of your players, rounding up, to the contracts that they ask for.

Should you idle during the draft, I will draft as if I were in charge of your team.

Should you idle during free agency, this is unavoidably the most harsh of the four offseason events. I will not sign any players for you and the AI will fill the holes on your behalf at the conclusion of free agency.

The Almighty Slash Line

All contracts will be presented to you via slash lines. It is imperative that you interpret and understand a slash line and its components, so here is an example to kick off my seasonal explanation:

3 / $7.50 mil / $1.80 mil

3 = length in seasons that the contract will last. All contracts will end up being between 1-7 seasons in length. There are some in-game and league-mandated limitations on length, but I will explain that rather soon.

$7.50 mil = Total salary that a player will earn over the life of the contract should the contract not be reworked while still under said contract or the player released.

Using this example, the player will receive $7.50 mil over three seasons, which gives him an average cap hit of $2.50 mil. His cap hit will not be $2.50 mil in each season though. This contract will see the player's cap hit rise each season, so his first year cap hit might be $2.12 mil, $2.47 mil for the second season, and $2.91 mil for the final season.

$1.80 mil = Portion of total salary that is guaranteed, aka signing bonus. For most, this is the hardest thing to grasp about the slash line and contracts in general. The NFL does not have fully guaranteed contracts, which means that what a player signs for might not actually be what they receive in the end. The team that signs a player to a contract will always be on the hook for the final figure in a slash line, with the only exception being if a player retires while under contract.

Using this example, the player might have a cap hit of $2.12, $2.47, and $2.91 mil in the first, second, and third seasons. However, his signing bonus is stretched out evenly across every season. The annual bonus in this contract would be $600k ($1.80 mil / 3 years). The annual bonus is a feature on the team financial sheet, so that info will always be available to you.

Now, if you trade or release a player under contract with guaranteed money, you will receive a reduction in your salary cap space, aka cap penalty, that is equal to their annual bonus x the years remaining on their contract. Using this example once again, let's say the player is released after the first season. That would leave him with $1.20 mil left in guaranteed money ($600k annual bonus x 2 years left on contract). The team that signed him to that contract would then be issued a cap penalty the following offseason to the tune of $1.20 mil.

If that player would be traded instead, the original team would receive the same cap penalty, but the new team would have a discounted contract. Because the original team is always on the hook for the guaranteed money, the $1.20 mil that is still owed that player is taken out of the contract for the new team. If the cap hits for years 2 and 3 were originally $2.47 and $2.91 mil and the annual bonus was $600k, then the new cap hits for the new team would be $1.87 and $2.31 mil. The new team could then release or trade the player at any time without financial repercussions since the contract no longer had any guaranteed money attached.

Finally, in case someone doesn't know, mil = dollars in millions while k = dollars in thousands.

As everyone knows, 15 seasons have come and gone, but heading into the 16th season, there are still some players around from the inaugural season. Here they are:

LG Logan Mankins (Packers)
C Chris White (Chiefs)
RT Shane Olivea (Broncos)
RT Alex Barron (Bills)
RT Junius Coston (Vikings)
DT Randy Starks (Ravens)
DT Tommie Harris (Broncos)
K Nate Kaeding (Pioneers)
K Mike Nugent (Washington)
K Josh Scobee (49ers)
K Robbie Gould (Titans)
P Donnie Jones (Washington)
P Andy Groom (Packers)
P Kyle Larson (Eagles)
P Mike Scifres (Titans)
P Andy Lee (Rams)
P Dustin Colquitt (Colts)

Mankins, White, Olivea, Barron, Harris, Kaeding, Nugent, Scobee, Gould, and Larson were all selected by their respective clubs in the fantasy draft that occurred at the start of the project. White however does not have the distinction in their player profile as having came to the team via fantasy draft because at one point, the Chiefs allowed him to enter free agency before signing him again at that free agency.

Coston was originally a Giant before signing with the Vikings as a free agent. He has won four Super Bowls, tied for the second most in our history.

Starks has been well traveled. He began with the Bucs, but has played with the Titans, Ravens, Steelers, Wildcats, and Vikings before returning to the Ravens as a playoff signing.

Jones has also been well traveled. He started with the Wildcats (then the Cardinals) before going spending time with the Bucs, Titans, Bills, Panthers, and finally Washington where his four years there are more than he's spent in any other stop.

While Groom has only played for the Packers, he spent the first few years of his career as a free agent before being signed to replace the retired Josh Miller and has spent 13 seasons in Green Bay.

Scifres began with the Bills before being involved in what I believe is our only punter-for-punter trade and has spent the rest of his career with the Titans.

Lee began with the Bengals. He had one more stop before becoming a Ram, but I unfortunately can't tell who with certainty. My first thought was the Chiefs though.

Colquitt spent the first 13 seaons with the Patriots before they kicked him out and has been a Colt since.

Restricted Free Agency

This minor but oddly detailed offseason event is for a small subset of players who just completed their untampered rookie contract that was exactly three years in length. These players are not eligible to be originally offered multi-year contracts by the team that holds their rights but instead one-year contracts of fixed figures based on the tender level that you offer them.

Our Tender Levels for this season
No Tender = no potential draft pick compensation = $0
Low Tender = potential original round draft pick compensation = $1.15 mil
Mid Tender = potential 1st round draft pick compensation = $2.51 mil
High Tender = potential 1st + 3rd round draft pick compensation = $3.34 mil

Now, the mentioning of draft pick compensation there is only applicable if another team attempts to sign your player. It has no bearing on this first phase of RFA. It wouldn't make much sense if you had to give up draft picks to sign your own player now would it? Newcomers and people who don't have a good memory are certainly free to ask me what round a player was drafted in if that affects their tender level.

That being said, you might want to keep in mind about that draft pick compensation when you determine what tender to offer your player. If you think highly of your player, you might want to offer the highest tender to deter other teams from attempting to sign them. If you don't consider a player to be a part of your future plans, you might want to offer the low tender so that they barely count against your cap space and you could end up even getting draft pick compensation if someone else wants him.

A word of advice from me: The full monetary amount attached to the tenders is NOT GUARANTEED and in many cases is less than what they would make on the open market, so there is essentially 0 risk to offering all of your players a tender unless you personally hate them with a passion.

You can also engage trade talks with other teams so that you can prearrange a trade that if X player is not signed by another team, you will trade them to Y team for Z compensation that might be lower than what Y team would have had to give up to sign them during RFA. In this scenario, you might want to offer the highest tender level to deter the maximum amount of teams from disrupting the trade.

RFA Rules

1. I will privately contact every user and inform them of their RFAs and the tender levels. If you dont have any RFAs, then you won't be notified.

2. Users will have three days to inform me which players they wish to sign and at what tender level.

3. I will publicly reveal all RFAs from user and A.I. teams that can be signed by other teams (AKA were offered a tender) plus their draft pick compensation and the base kind of deal they are looking for.

4. I will give users seven days (due to Thanksgiving) to decide any action, if any, they wish to take. If they do wish to take further action, they will PM me.

Now by "any action you wish to take," I mean that everyone has an opportunity to attempt to sign RFAs from other teams. You might see some sticker shock but keep in mind that some positions are more expensive (WRs, DTs, QBs) than others (OLBs, Cs, TEs) relative to their overall rating. An 80 WR will usually be more expensive than a 90 C, and that's just how things are

5. If a team attempts to sign another teams RFA, then the user who owns the RFAs rights will have three days to decide whether or not to match the offer.

The deadline for the first phase (encompassing rule #s 1 + 2) will be Wednesday, November 24th at 10 PM ET. As always, do not hesitate to ask me any questions.

RFA Phase 2

The following posts will contain a list of all RFAs, sorted by team, that were offered tenders by their team during the first phase. Each player will have in parenthesis the draft pick compensation required to sign (not simply offer but actually sign) them as well as the default deal that they are looking for to the side.

In order to even submit an offer to a player, you must have the draft picks on hand. Post #7 has the NFL Draft order, which includes any draft pick ownership changes based on previous trades. You should keep in mind that if you own multiple picks in a round, signing an RFA will have you lose the worst of how ever many picks you have. For example, let's say the Lions try to sign Broncos OLB Matt Milano . They own the 17th and 27th picks in the 2nd round. Should Milano accept their offer and the Broncos elect not to match their offer in the third phase, the Lions will end up giving the Bengals the 27th pick in the 2nd round (59th overall).

Going back to the deals in question, these deals are for the other 31 teams in the league. The team who first offered the tender is stuck with the 1 year deal unless a team submits an offer during this phase. You can also offer them a long term deal later on in the offseason as well as any time during the pre, regular, and postseason, but what's important right now is that you understand that you can do nothing about your own RFAs at this moment.

If you do wish to submit an offer to an RFA from another team, the deal mentioned is not the exact deal that you have to offer them. You are free to mess with the years, total money, and/or guaranteed money. As a word of caution though, unless you are trying some bizarre psychological attack to where you offer a deal that would devastate a team financially but would be practically forced to accept, you will want to submit an offer that would ultimately net you the player you seek. Not only that, but you are in essence competing with 30 other teams for the right to simply sign an RFA. If you skimp out on any combination of years, total money, and guaranteed money, you are decreasing, sometimes substantially, the odds that you will get the player.

If you do submit a custom offer, use the base deal as a benchmark. Using Bears TE O.J. Howard, he is asking for a 4 / $12.0 mil / $1.80 mil contract. Dividing the latter two figures by the years, you find out that he is asking for an average cap hit of $3.0 mil (12.0 / 4) and annual bonus of $450k mil (1.80 / 4).

I hope that everyone understands the slash line that I explained earlier in the topic, but if not, do not hesitate to ask any questions. You can direct them to me via PM, through the topic, or Discord.

Do not feel compelled to be active in this phase if you don't want to. While most users do not, several do as well as the AI, so it isn't as if nothing happens.

The deadline to submit offers for the second phase of RFA will be Thursday, December 2nd at 11 PM ET

I have pick 34 (2nd pick in the 2nd round). I'd like to move up to the 1st round (any pick). I can either give up a future pick or multiple later picks (it would be 2x 4ths probably, I have no 3rd) or potentially a player to make it happen.
