#56:

And our first trade of the offseason

Bears receive:
TE Rob Gronkowski (87 overall, 31 years old)

Bengals receive:
WR Josh Briscoe (86 overall, 33 years old)

Bears will incur a $2.4 mil cap penalty to turn a $7.61 mil cap hit into a $4.42 mil cap hit
Bengals will incur an $800k cap penalty to turn a 5.22 mil cap hit into an $8.03 mil cap hit

The Bears made strides on offense last season, but they still have work to do. With limited cap space and an excess at WR, they decided that a trade route might be the best approach. Their current TEs include one on an expired deal who had 6 rec for 32 yards in his two game audition, one playing on a tender who had 213 yards in 14 starts before being benched, and a 71 overall who is just a cheap bench option. Gronk was displaced in Cincy, but he was one of the better offensive TEs in the league during his starting time there.

The Bengals were primed to undergo a bit of an offensive makeover. The passing game was awful last season and having lost their top WR in consecutive offseasons, that left them Chris Hogan as the only 80+ on the roster. Briscoe does have an injury history but has shown he can be an above-average starting WR at times, and they could desperately use the talent there. The Bengals have two mid-upper 80s TEs, which is a waste, so they use the one who has been on the bench the past two seasons to grab a new starter elsewhere.

The Bears understood the trade parameters, the financial impact, and Gronk's history. This trade is now official.
