Board 8 > I'm sorry, but the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes are $60 games?

I'm honestly really not trying to start anything, I know some people are excited about these and I have just been saying whatever because let people buy what they want.

But this remake of a decade+ old game, that looks like a mobile game, and was just straight up farmed out to a no name dev that exclusively MAKES mobile games, is a $60 full retail release?

Do people actually think this is justified?

Datamines and leaks actually showed the music was placeholder, and the actual music is rather good. They also revealed There's stuff like gym leader/E4 rematches with Platinum teams and teams that are 6 pokemon, fully EV trained, with actual good movesets, and a pretty neat way to get old legendaries, among some other small things. Nothing huge, but more than expected.

I was just thinking of it as a remake and it didn't even cross my mind that it was a regular retail. I've never looked at another Pokemon remake so I don't know the standard. However, those are both Game freak and typically look very good. This one, with the dev and visuals it has...

every remake has always been full-price relative to the platform they're on, although tbf this is the first remake on a non-handheld *edit* oh right yeah LGPE as paper mentioned

I always remember Pokemon games being really expensive though, even in the reseller markets for the GBA games which ended up getting completely fucked over by bootleg copies

Ehhh "console game".

Sword and Shield was built like a handheld game and didn't take any advantage of even the Switch's meager power. Even the online elements were often more busted than those on the 3DS and DS.

And this somehow looks much worse than that.

Though from a marketing standpoint, sure.

I sincerely hope it runs better than the Wild Area, being a locked overhead perspective and all. I just think it's harsh to repurpose a game from years ago as most of your product and not only charge the same amount as it cost at launch but 50% more. While we're at it, 2-version remakes are even less justifiable than 2-version new games, but you know, tradition.

Performance aside, Link's Awakening is a full remake, going from 2D Gameboy graphics to an original 3D style, while also modernizing the gameplay and controls. This doesn't seem as new.

Prices are all over the place on ebay, but the average CIB for D/P has been $60+ for the last 9 months. You think people won't buy it when the originals are more expensive? If people are willing to buy something for the price it's assigned then the price is justified, so yeah, $60 is fair. DS or Switch, it's a $60 game now.

Pokemon used to be a great series. It wasn't until X/Y that things started to go downhill, and Ultra SuMo where Gamefreak just gave up on putting any sort of effort into the series.

honestly, with the patch and everything, the games actually sound pretty decent. its still a bummer that a lot of the platinum stuff got left off, but whats here seems solid.

obviously the graphic style is still a point of contention, but aside from
that Im feeling a lot better about what Im seeing than I was a few days ago

So if you bought the double pack you actually paid twice for the same exact game, just with a single byte difference. Making it probably the most expensive byte in the history of home consoles video games history

I know the difference between versions was always minimal but this time it actually feels worse

I never knew the exact difference between the code of different paired versions but they've always been almost entirely shared assets. The biggest differences would be intro videos with the cover legendary or like, Gen 3's enemy team differences. Exclusive Pokemon still have to exist in both if only due to trading.

This is literally the way it's always been, they've just been doing it less efficiently.

The games have always been the same, they just made two separate builds/releases, one with an A flag, and one with a B flag.

This is just more efficient. One build/release with a C flag that has an "If A, then A, else if B, then B" statement in it.

People were for some reason under the impression that they made the same game from the ground up twice, which has never been true.

But I agree, I'm not planning to get it though. Have my pokemon pearl with only a bidoof in it cause everything's been moved up to pokemon Bank, and I can just restart that if I wanted to replay it.

However I definitely think they could be worth $60 as you can get a lot of fun-hours out of it, and video games are undervalued as a whole.

And to be clear on what I mean a bit more, what was done in this case isnt any more lazy or anything, its literally just more efficient coding and better practice.

Frankly, what this tells us, if anything, is that ILCA or whoever are more efficient coders than Gamefreak. It makes sense, though. This is the kind of thing you want to do in mobile development. Its dumb to waste time and resources to make both an iOS codebase and an Android codebase when you can use a language that allows you to release both an iOS version and an Android version from the same single codebase.

BTW, in Japan the remakes are retailing at like $50, compared to SMTV for example which retails at almost $90. It's not uncommon for games to retail in the $70-90 range. So blame the American market IMO

I don't like the price but I like DP and I'm looking forward to the remake so whatever. I never gave the price a second thought, I knew it'd be a full priced beast when it was announced.

I am in no way implying that anyone should ever pirate a game instead of legally acquiring it, but it's made in Unity, an engine that will function on just about anything. It's therefore very likely it's going to be datamined and easily available on the internet sometime next year. I would encourage absolutely nobody to look for this sort of thing regardless of how outrageous the retail price is.

People have also been playing the game for days now since it leaked. There are switch emulators that run it quite well. Which is also how people found out that the endgame is not on the cartridge and requires a day 1 patch.
