I honestly feel like it depends on the situation, but in most cases 33 - 33 - 33 would be the best option.

I'm just thinking about the time that my brother lived with my cousins in a high rent area and their rent went from 1800 to 2800 and they had been paying 50 - 50, but he asked if they could pay 33 - 33 - 33 from then on and they flipped out on him for "being a communist" lmfao.

Either is fair if you agree to it imo

I can see why you would be a bit pissed if they tried to make you pay half after agreed to 33/33/33 but you can't get mad if you agree to it out of your own free will

Both, at least if you and the couple both only get 1 bedroom.

50/50 for base rent.

3333/33 for utilities/internet etc.

It's broken down by usage of space. You should get an equal amount of cupboard space/fridge space/etc as the couple as well (so half the fridge/storage space etc).

IF they take more, or have a seperate room (IE 2 rooms for them 1 for you) then 33/33/33 for base rent as well, but that isn't normally how it goes.

As the couple would likely split the rent if you didn't live there having you there means they would split it three ways. Expecting you to pay half would be unacceptable.

If the couple gets a master bedroom with an attached bathroom, and I just get an ordinary one with a bathroom outside, I wouldnt agree to pay half either because thats not an equal trade off.

Living with a couple is always a mistake tho, because if you have anything about yourself that makes you difficult to live with, youre gonna have 2 people against you in any kind of situation.

Normally I'd say 33/33/33 (so basically 66/33) would be the best scenario, but I'm willing to at least entertain the idea that the couple could get a bit of a break (so, say, maybe more like 60/40), assuming they're cool about things and I like them.

No way I'm going 50/50 though. Someone doesn't get to live completely free in the house simply because you're fucking them. Unless I also get to fuck them.

An even 3-way split isn't necessarily the most reasonable, presuming the couple is sharing one bedroom, but 50/50 isn't at all fair. Couples don't necessarily use twice as much of the apartment as a single person does, but they also use more than a single person would. That's something that should be negotiated up front, though. If your brother's been paying 50/50 for a while, it's a given that his roommates would object to changing that, no matter how reasonable it is (especially in a context where they're already wondering how they're going to manage another rent increase). Agreeing to 50/50 was a mistake from the outset, but I don't think he'll be able to fix it without moving elsewhere with different people.

I first jumped on the 33/33/33 train of thought. But then after voting I needed a TINY bit more details.

If it was a lets all move into this place together at the start with it being 3 people clearly going 33/33/33 would make more sense.

But lets say the couple lived there first and then a 3rd roommate joined them. I could see the couple saying hey we are 50% you are the other 50%. The new guy is still getting a discount compared to going alone in a place and they are now also getting a discount.

If you all went into a new place and at the start it was 50/50 couple/single person then that single person screwed themselves from the start and it should stay that way, tough luck buddy.

To add on to what I say, I think it just depends on what everyone is ok with. For example, I would think utilities would definitely be split as thats usually used equally to a degree. As long as one person isnt the only one keeping lights on constantly, or taking hour long showers every night, its somewhat equal. That said, they would still be using the same amount of rooms Unless the other person in the couple gets their own room, as well Then its 33-33-33. But if not, youll just have to find a price everyone is comfortable with Which isnt too hard But in terms of rent, you just figure out what everyone else is ok with, and what youre ok with

A lot of factors for me to make a real call but probably 50-50 in my opinion. Utilities though, fuck that, that all gets divided evenly.
