If you bought a lottery ticket for a friend and they hit it big, who deserves the money?

You would be surprised at how many people view this situation..if someone bought a friend a lottery ticket cause they didnt have the money to yet somehow hit it big, the person who bought it would generally think they DESERVE some if not all of the winnings since they bought it..

but how would you feel if this happened?

It's your friends

Depending on what kind of friend you have, they may or may not give you a piece of the winnings

First of all, it was a gift, freely given. I have no moral or legal right to the potential winnings. Secondly, even if I did have some right to a portion of the winnings, that would fairly be the cost of the ticket multiplied by the odds of winning multiplied by the actual winnings. That would usually, even in the case of a jackpot, be far less than the cost of the ticket. Therefore, I might as well just give up on a portion of the winnings, since the ticket only cost $3.

The whole concept of buying a FRIEND a lottery ticket flabbergasts me

If this was gonna be an issue beforehand, then you tell them MOFUCKA i'm cashing this ticket of yours of mines

and if you win i'm keeping it

if you lose, we can't be friends anymore

Kill the friend, claim the ticket, you bought it, it's on camera, so as long as the body is never found, you're golden.

It's gotta be split at least 50/50. The dude that got the ticket bought for him wouldn't have won if he wasn't staked by his friend. Just check out what happens when someone stakes someones entry fee in poker, pool, etc. the staker, or stakehorse, will a lot of time get 70% of the tournament/match winnings.

To me, it depends on the person and situation. I think we would need to discuss things before buying the lottery ticket.

I wouldn't expect anything that I didn't already agree to beforehand. Like if I say "if you win you gotta give me x" then I would expect that, but I wouldn't make an outrageous demand. If I was the one that won off of a gift ticket I would give them some even if we don't agree to it.

If it's a gift it should be nothing, think of it like any other present, if you give someone a pair of pants as a gift you don't expect them to reimburse you for half.

Depends. Did the ticket physically change hands? And was there compensation?

If the friend gave the money, the ticket is theirs. If I physically handed them the ticket but wasn't compensated, that feels a little dicier although if they were handed the ticket before compensation then even without being paid, the claim would be weak. However, if I was holding the ticket and hadn't been compensated by that point, I'm not sure how much of a claim they'd have on it.
