Do you think America is hopeless when people this are voted into office?

A Trailer Trash Republican Truck Driver who only spent $153 on his campaign may manage a stunning upset against a long time Democrat in New Jersey State history after he had a 2000 vote lead with more than 99% reporting.

The anti-abortion advocate Ed Durr is leading Senate President Steve Sweeney in South New Jersey's 3rd District 52 to 48%

Sweenedy, an Ironworks Union official and one of the most powerful politicians in the state has been state senator for 2 decades

Durr, a 58 y/o Truck Driver for furniture store Raymour & Flanigan grew up there with 3 children and 6 grandchildren spent $153 with 66 of it at a Dunkin Donuts to buy food and drinks for his "staff" and 86 for flyers and business cards

Sweeney was also a possible 2024 gubernatoral candidate before facing a possible loss now and also spent millions in 2017 on one of the most expensive state legislative races in US history who is now being bested by this man

This could be a wider rebellion of suburban and working class americans against Democrats socialist spending and support for CRT which has now worried Democrats for the upcoming midterms next year

Unexpected outcomes across local and state races have forced the state democrats to postpone a leadership conference until they figure out who is left

Durr has never held elected office but said he ran in his blue collar and predominantly white area by being unable to get a concealed carry permit and launched a failed bid for NJ lower house in 2019

For the first time his district will be represented by a pro-2nd amendment conservative rather than a democrat who once called Chris Christie a "rotten bastard"

Durr ran on an anti-mask, anti-lockdown and anti-abortion advocate who says he will fight to bring a full return to NJ and ban vaccine mandates as well as abortion which he finds ABHORRENT.

The disconnect between Democrats and White Voters seem to be coming to fruition as CRT and transgender bathrooms is now a battleground issue to ban in many states where conservatives say is a threat to white people that they are inherently "evil".

Murphy had just barely won his election but will lose a handful of state senate and house seats though looks to retain a majority as Democrats now have to focus on how to turn it around next year when a wider election comes around nationwide

Do you think America is hopeless when people like this are voted in?

I'm not sure how is this honestly bad. Seriously, look how much money is spent on these races. Sometimes millions up millions. To be able to this is actually quite impressive, especially in a rather blue state like NJ, regardless of what his beliefs are or are not.

On one hand, it's good that somebody was able to win despite spending far less than their competitors. Campaign spending is indeed stupidly inflated and creates far too many opportunities for bribery, so seeing somebody escape that norm is great. On the other, though, he won purely because a bunch of people who clearly don't understand the issues at hand want to make solving the issues at hand illegal, not because he's actually going to do anything beneficial. I'm all for getting away from politicians that are bought by lobbyists, but this isn't an improvement.

Part of the problem is 99% of the time these guys also have 0 political experience at all. Now you can claim we need fresh blood in there, but it would be like you going into the Hospital for an operation and some random janitor will be doing the procedure.

We need qualified people in there period.

Well, that's just embarrassing...

And apparently Sweeney's races have set spending records a few times now. Meanwhile organizations which normally back Democrats have shied away from him, showing that it's only the wealthy establishment and its cronies who support him.

If anything, this shows there's hope for America, considering the incumbent had held the position for decades, poured millions into the race, and was apparently some crooked union guy.

Backward is rooting for union leaders who dump millions into campaigns and who have held the office for decades while things got worse in the state for working-class Americans. Who exactly do you think he's really for, other than himself?

And apparently this guy has led (money-wise) the most expensive race a few times now.

The fact that your chosen candidate has set records for campaign spending on races of this type multiple times in a row makes me question whether you understand the issues at hand. You have a guy who held office longer than many voters have been alive who has spent a small fortune time after time to hold the position -- while the state has suffered -- and you think that's a good thing.

And, much like another NJ politician -- Sharpe James -- Sweeney was "double-dipping" during his tenure.

That excuse might not ring so hollow if you weren't overlooking the fact the incumbent had virtually no experience going and, more importantly, state senates tend to be more entry-level legislative positions. Basically you're proposing a catch-22 where only the incumbents -- who themselves had no experience in that arena -- would be able to fulfill the role.

I can't really speak to how good of a choice the other guy is (mostly because I don't really care and haven't been paying attention), but that doesn't change that voting against socialist spending generally hurts the working class. That's just inherent in the concept of socialist spending.

I can't even be mad, that's just fucking hilarious that he won on $153 against the top state senate Democrat.
I'm glad Dems got a wake up call in a small election at least, maybe now they'll pull their heads out of their asses before 2022's elections.
Republicans aren't even a real party anymore, just a cult of personality to a reality tv star. And Dems STILL can only barely eke out the slimmest of victories against that kind of opposition, and they think it's a huge win....
Guys like this should be slam dunks, the fact they're not says a ton about just how weak and pathetic the Democratic party is.

Seems about right.
Focus on taxing the rich, advancing green energy, reducing inflation and stopping the housing price surge, and other stuff that a massive majority of people actually want.
stop catering to the twitter crowd as if they represent America, it's really turning people against the Democrats.
Give Manchin and Sinema whatever pork they want and get some shit done. Failing to do anything w/ total control of the government while people can't afford housing and see massive inflation is wreaking havoc on the party.

That the problem though. There are enough people simply voting R for whomever the candidate is because the democrat party, by and large, has become so over the top woke and condescending to anyone that they disagree with. The R can be and often are the biggest fucking morons on the planet, but there are a significant number of people who will vote for an idiot over someone talking down to them

It's the result of FPTP and the ensuing 2 party system.

If you don't like the guy in charge, the other party is the only option to vote him out.
It's why Republicans don't even need to try. They just fuck things up, Dems come in to clean it up but that takes time, so before they can, people mad that things still suck vote the R's back in. Or even worse, Dems do literally nothing, and their hold on power crumbles even faster.
Hell, even if Dems did everything right, as soon as a black swan event happens, they'd get voted out in a wave election.

Republicans have realized how fucked the election system is in this country and exploited it to the max. Push as much of their extreme agenda as they can, get voted out, watch as Dems spend most of their time fixing things and squabbling w/ each other, get voted back in by voters angry and wanting to express it, rinse and repeat...

Also, bowing down to the failed sjw ideologies being promoted by the crazies isn't going to help one bit. As much as some ignorant people want to convince themselves that it is what society wants, I can tell you that far, FAR more people are getting reaaaallllllyyy tired of all the woke crap.

It depends.

If, by some miracle, Biden can stop being basically senile and a failure on everything he undertakes (whatever little he's trying to do at least), I can see the Dems doing better.

Also, by the next election, they'll have let in enough illegal welfare moochers through the floodgate to guarantee more Democrats votes. I mean, have you seen this board? We have people who openly say that society should foot the bill so they can stay at home and be even more useless than they are now. Promise to throw more money at lazy losers, and you'll get in plenty of votes.

And to bring that analogy to its logical conclusion, voting for Sweeney would be like voting for a janitor who has played doctor a little longer because that's literally how he came into the role. And it's not like anybody gets a state senate seat with a deep bench of experience because, again, that's more of an entry-level role. If anybody held office before that, it's generally something very, very minor that wouldn't prepare them for a legislative role anyway.

I think you're overestimating state senates. More importantly, "taxing the rich" does nothing to solve America's much large economic and social issues, and is generally used as a "SQUIRREL!"-level distraction, especially when so much of the "tax the rich" argument comes down to Jeff Bezos's Amazon stock is worth too much rather than actual income. (Granted, I know that at least some posters might want to solve that by having the government take over Amazon.)
