I am playing through the series for the first time ever on the Anniversary Collection, and it's pretty remarkable just how polished and creative the original NES trilogy is.

The fact that there are six Mega Man games from this era is very impressive, but as a whole they really don't pack the same gravitas as the Castlevania games and don't hold up as well imo.

Nah Mega Man holds up just as well, maybe having 6 dilutes their appeal though.

Some latter day NES games like the Capcom Disney games hold up really well (though maybe lacking in gravitas).

But I mean yeah Castlevania 1 is like a top 5 nes game. 3 is probably up there though I find it a bit long.

iv been trying some games in this NES collection on the Switch lately and its incredible how many of these are.... literally not games. theres nothing to do gameplay wise, they are buggy messes, theres not much theme wise.

Yet there are things like Castlevania that just work and that spawned franchises lasting tot his day

How well has Castlevania aged, though? The anime is beloved, but when was the last time a game in the series was lauded?

Has there even been a game in the main series in over a decade? I thought the last several games were all well received before Konami abandoned it, which has nothing to do with 'age.'

While it's not much of a franchise, I just played through Fire 'n Ice on the Switch's NES collection, and it holds up really well today.

They're definitely right there with Zelda, Mario etc. at the very least.

I was very impressed at how well Ninja Gaiden has aged when I played it on Switch.

Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, SMB, Castlevania

Those would be the 4 series that have aged best I think. Overall I probably give the nod to Mega Man over Castlevania just because while Mega Man and Mega Man 6 are weak they're still better than Simon's Quest (and only Mega Man seems "aged" of the two)

Most of the well-known NES sidescrollers that don't dip too deep into exploration or RPG mechanics hold up fine.

Ghosts n Goblins is probably the biggest exception.

Ghosts n Goblins main problem is that it was ported by Micronics who had no capacity to not produce shit. With a better port it would still have aged more than most of the competitors but it would at least be decent
