There's a whole list of NES games that I can still play. Until Switch, the NES was always #1.

By and large, puzzle games tend not to be very technically demanding. That means old ones usually hold up pretty well because their mechanics aren't that different from what you'd see in modern examples of the genre.

The NES has some pretty solid games, but I really can't say there's any basis for considering it the best system ever. I also can't imagine any reason to feel that the Switch dethrones it, for the handful of people that do appreciate the NES enough to give it such a title.

Nintendo made great consoles until the N64. That was the last Nintendo console I owned.

There are definitely some that have aged better than others and puzzle games generally do age more gracefully on average, lol. I do think that a lot of old platformers hold up as well, and the ones that haven't aged well haven't because they had serious design flaws rather than being merely dated.

Beyond the obvious (Tetris, SMB2, SMB3, Mega Man, etc), I think the original Castlevania, Sweet Home, Journey to Silius, Crystalis, and Bubble Bobble (best with co-op of course) are still solid. Faxanadu is as well, I think, and while YMMV, I think Zelda 2 is good as well and just has a brutal learning curve. Getsu Fuma Den is balls-breakingly unforgiving but I like it a lot. Solar Jetman is a noteworthy NES title. A couple of licensed games are still quite good, like Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers. I've heard Lagrange Point and Princess Tomato are both very good but I haven't played them.

And then there are the games which you know haven't aged well but you like anyway. Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors is probably the best example of this for me, and probably also Legacy of the Wizard, both of which have some awkward and grindy mechanics but I got hit with the nostalgia stick hard for both of them.

Then there are games that have been remade and there's basically no reason to go back to their NES versions even though those versions are still good. Dragon Quest III is probably the most clear-cut example of that. Actually, a lot of puzzle games from the NES do suffer from that, with Tetris being the most obvious one. I do know someone who exclusively plays the NES version, but she's an exception to the rule.

Really?

If anything I play more NES games than any other console. They always make me feel like gaming has generally gone backwards, and I feel most of them hold up better than other more modern consoles (Playstation, for example)

I really notice the 2-5 minutes it takes to start playing any game made in the last 20 years because you have to wait for all the splash screens, loading screens, menus, etc. I also loathe tutorials. Most modern games you have to play for like two hours before you can start playing the game.

Contra? I'm up and running in less than 30 seconds. I can probably finish the first level of Super Mario Bros 2 before you can even start playing Grand Theft Auto 5.

There is a lot that didn't hold up (or wasn't good to begin with) but there's a lot that's good. My kids enjoy several things on the mini, and that misses several good titles.

RBI Baseball and Tecmo Super Bowl hold up as simple sports games that you can play against almost anyone. The problem with modern sports games is that there's enough complexity that someone who plays a lot will always crush someone who doesn't: that didn't used to be AS problematic. Punch Out is still fun. My kids surprisingly like Double Dragon. Final Fantasy has it's issues, but they like it. Contra/Gradius are a brand of simple arcade fun that doesn't exist outside of frustrating-to-play mobile games now. Zelda is still simple fun that beats almost all mobile games that would otherwise be similar. Dragon Warrior 4: still pretty good. Dr Mario/Tetris are solid.

Etc etc there are others.

8 Eyes and Crystalis are still very playable.... and even though Castlevania was better at the time, I daresay 8 Eyes aged better
